Helicopter Ride Over Queenstown, New Zealand Fast-motion video of a helicopter ride over Queenstown and The Remarkables mountain range in New Zealand (original video was approx. 30 minutes long). Ascended to 7,000 feet above sea level and landed atop one of the snowy mountain peeks for a look around. The camcorder sat on the floor of the helicopter, looking out the front, plexiglass window. If it seems shaky at all, that's because we were getting blown back and forth by strong winds. Soundtrack is "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" by U2, a song that was a staple of our journey across the South Island of NZ. Times Square Ball Drop 2011 HD NEW Times Square New Years Eve 2011 Ball Drop Subscribe for 2012 Ball Drop Each year during the New Year's Eve celebration in Times Square in Manhattan New York City a time ball made by Waterford Crystal and electric lights is raised to the top of a pole on the One Times Square building at 6:00 pm and then lowered to mark the coming of the New Year. The ball descends 77 feet (23 m) over the course of a minute coming to rest at the bottom of its pole at midnight, then a sign with the digits of the new year lights up as the ball's lights turn off. Toshiba's Times Square billboard directly below the ball counts down to midnight as well. Every year up to one million people gather in Times Square to watch the ball drop and an estimated 1 billion watch the video of the event, 100 million of them in the United States. In 1904 The New York Times opens its new headquarters on Longacre Square (the city's second tallest building) and persuades the city to rename the triangular "square" for the newspaper. Owner Adolph Ochs initiates a massive celebration in the square for New Year's, which is so popular 200,000 came it permanently displaces the celebration from Trinity Church. There is no ball, but there are fireworks. 1907 Walter F. Palmer chief electrician for The Times creates the first New Year's Eve Ball in response to the behest of publisher Adolph Ochs to create some kind of spectacular midnight show that would draw attention to the Square. The New Year's Eve Ball first descended from a flagpole at One Times Square constructed with iron and wood materials with 100 25-watt bulbs weighing 700 pounds (320 kg) and measuring 5 feet (1.5 m) in diameter. At first it dropped 1 second after midnight. In 2011 the tradition continues here is a look at Times Square New York City on December 31st 2010 New Years Eve for the big 2011 ball drop celebration. Rocket launch - NZ blasts into space New Zealand aerospace company Rocket Lab is counting down to the historic launch of a space-bound rocket from Great Mercury Island. The launch from the private island, off the Coromandel Peninsula, in about a fortnight will be the first time in the southern hemisphere a privately owned company has launched a rocket to space. Rocket Lab is holding online auctions both for premium viewing spots on the island and for payload space on the rocket. Chief executive Peter Beck says the rocket, Atea-1, has a 2kg payload capacity and expects interest from commercial parties keen to send products or services into space, or people wanting to send personal mementos. Beck says the project will give the global scientific community the first practical alternative to conventional rockets at significantly lower cost, as it can carry miniature scientific equipment. But the coming launch will be the first in a series where the primary payload will be instrumentation measuring the machine's performance. The small rocket will use a new low-emission hybrid fuel technology. It will travel at Mach 5 to an altitude of 120 kilometres - 20km on from where space starts - then return to Earth in a sub-orbital ballistic arc, to be recovered from the sea. Launch week begins on November 30 and the actual launch day will be dependent on weather conditions.
