Como jefe del Partido Nacional Socialista Alemán de los Trabajadores (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei o NSDAP), dirigió el gobierno del país de 1933 a 1945, período en el que ocupó sucesivamente los cargos de canciller, Jefe de Gobierno y Jefe de Estado. Consiguió el poder durante el período de crisis de Alemania después de la Primera Guerra Mundial. Utilizó propaganda y oratoria carismática, enfatizando en el nacionalismo, el antisemitismo y el anticomunismo. Después de reestructurar la economía y rearmar las fuerzas armadas, estableció una dictadura totalitaria.
