Google Sweetens Hacker Honey Pot

Transcript by Newsy.com BY KELSEY WAANANEN You're watching multisource tech video news analysis from Newsy. Wanna earn a little extra spending cash? Become a computer hacker. But you might be surprised at who’s laying out the cash. Google is offering $20,000 to the person who can hack its Chrome browser at the annual Pwn2Own competition. But Google wasn't originally in the line of fire this year. A blogger for the Silicon Valley Business Journal explains. “When the company learned that its Chrome browser was not going to be included in this year's Pwn2Own, ... it not only went to contest sponsor TippingPoint ZDI and begged to be let back in, it offered to foot the bill...” According to the Register, the reason Chrome was originally excluded is because its is based off the Webkit engine that runs Apple’s Safari browser, another Pwn2Own entry. To get the cash and laptop prize, a hacker must use faults in the web browser's code to compromise the computer. However, because of Chrome’s extra security layer, called a ‘sandbox,’ its rules are different. ComputerWorld explains.... "To walk off with Google's $20,000 on Pwn2Own's first day, a researcher must find and exploit two vulnerabilities in Google's code. Only on the second and third days of the contest can researchers employ a non-Chrome bug... A successful attack on the second and third days will still put $20,000 in the researcher's pocket, but only $10,000 of that will come from Google; TippingPoint will pony up the other $10,000." With so much at stake for Google, it bears mentioning that since 2009, hackers haven’t been able to get in. According to Forbe’s Andy Greenberg, many attributed this to Chrome’s status as a ‘newb”. “In last year’s Pwn2Own contest, Chrome remained the only browser to end the contest unscathed. Many have argued those results had little to do with Chrome’s security: The browser may have simply been too new at the time to attract much attention …” Sean Michael Kerner of InternetNews.com says --- no matter the outcome, Google wins. “The end result will be that Chrome will be more secure .... If they find a flaw, the competition rules require the flaw to remain private until Google discloses the flaw. If researchers can't find a flaw -- well then, that would give Google some serious bragging rights. ” So what do you think? Is Chrome going to get pwned and have to pay up? Or will it again reign over web browser security? Get more multisource tech video news analysis from Newsy.
