After hurtling through the tournament rounds unscathed with a 8-0 mark, the young American squad defeated Turkey in the FIBA 2010 World Championship finals Sunday, 81 - 64. Despite the jeers and cheers directed by a 15,000+ crowd at the visitors, the United States team won their first tournament since 1994 - relying on the deftness of the 21-year-old Kevin Durant. Durant, who competes for the NBA's Oklahoma City Thunder, knocked-down 28 points in a lopsided U.S. win over a physical and taller Turkish squad. Turkey began the game on an adrenaline high, boosted by their fan base. Yet Team USA managed to stifle the momentum, thanks to its pesky defense and Durant's deflating string of three-pointers. Opening the second quarter with a 22-17 lead, the U.S. defense burdened the home team by forcing turnovers due to the 24-second clock expiring. Durant further drilled threes to bolster his phenomenal 46% shooting rate over the entire tournament. Riding a 42-32 crest, the Americans continued to frustrate their opponents from the outset of the third period. Turnovers and missed shots, even layups, mired the Turkey players throughout the quarter. Despite yielding a height advantage, Team USA continued to out-rebound their opponents, as lead by Lamar Odom's dirty work under the boards (11 grabs). With a 61-48 cushion entering the final period, Coach Mike Krzyzewski's squad amped its defense even further, and scored several baskets on the run. As the Turkish crowd and team's enthusiasm diminished, the Americans built a commanding 74-52 lead at the half-way mark. Supporting Durant's 28-point outing were Russel Westbrook and Odom who chipped in 13 and 15 points, respectively. Durant set American records for the most overall points (205), and the most single game points (38) in a FIVB World Championship event. These accomplishments paved the way for his selection as the tournament's Most Valuable Player. With this victory, the United States has notched its fourth FIBA World Championship title. And thankfully, this team has earned the U.S. an automatic berth in the London 2012 Olympics where these 12 players will be competing for spots alongside the dozen Beijing Olympics gold medalists. In the 1970 World Cup Final, Brazil struck first, with Pelé heading in a cross by Rivelino at the 18th minute. Roberto Boninsegna equalized for Italy after a blunder in the Brazilian defence. In the second half, Brazil's firepower and creativity was too much for an Italian side that clung to their cautious defensive system. Gérson fired in a powerful shot for the second goal, and then helped provide the third, with a long free kick to Pelé who headed down into the path of the onrushing Jairzinho. Pelé capped his superb performance by drawing the Italian defence in the centre and feeding captain Carlos Alberto on the right flank for the final score. Carlos Alberto's goal, after a series of moves by the Brazilian team from the left to the centre, is considered one of the greatest goals ever scored in the history of the tournament. A total of 8 outfield players from Brazil passed the ball until Captain Carlos Alberto hammered the ball into the corner of the Italian goal following an inch perfect pass across the Italian 18 yard box from Pelé, prompted by the intelligent Tostão, who, with his back to the goal, told Pelé that Alberto was steaming in on the right flank. Tostão started the move 5 yards from the left of the Brazilian 18 yard box, then ran the length of the field to the Italian box without touching the ball again to tell Pelé to lay it off for Alberto. The players involved in the passes in order were Tostão, Brito, Clodoaldo, Pelé, Gérson, defender Clodoaldo beat 4 Italian players in his own half before passing to Rivelino who hit a perfect pass down the wing to Jairzinho. Jairzinho crossed from the wing to the centre of the box to Pelé who held the ball up to play a pass for Alberto to smash it home. The only outfield players not involved in the move were Everaldo and Piazza. The full team was Carlos Alberto, Felix, Piazza, Brito, Clodoaldo, Everaldo Antonio, Jairzinho, Gérson, Tostão, Pelé and Rivelino. Brazil won the World Cup with 19 goals scored by 7 players, all of whom featured in the Carlos Alberto goal. Before the finals in Mexico, Brazil had to play the qualifying rounds against Colombia, Venezuela and Paraguay. Brazil was far superior winning all 6 games, scoring 23 goals and conceding only 2. In the last match of the qualifying rounds Brazil beat Paraguay 1-0 and had the largest official audience ever recorded for a football match, with 183,341 spectators in Brazil's Maracanã Stadium. In total the Brazilian team won all 12 games , scoring 42 goals and conceding only 8. This victory consecrated the first tri-campeão (three-time champions) in football history. With this third win after 1958 and 1962, Brazil earned the right to retain the Jules Rimet Trophy permanently. (Ironically, it was stolen in 1983 while on display in Rio de Janeiro and never recovered.) The 1982 World Cup Final was a football match contested between Italy and West Germany. It was played on 11 July 1982 at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid. After a scoreless first half during which Antonio Cabrini fired a penalty wide of goal, Paolo Rossi scored first, heading home a bouncing Claudio Gentile cross from close range. Marco Tardelli then scored from the edge of the area before Alessandro Altobelli, at the end of a counterattack by winger Bruno Conti, made it 30. Italy's lead appeared secure, encouraging Italian president Sandro Pertini to wag his finger at the cameras in a playful 'not going to catch us now' gesture. Breitner scored for Germany in the 83rd minute but Italy held on to claim their first World Cup title in 48 years, and their third in total with a 31 victory. Coming after their 1934 and 1938 victories, Italy had now drawn level with record champions Brazil. Italy's Paolo Rossi won the Golden Boot as the tournament's top goalscorer, and the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player (awarded for the first time).
