As fêmeas utilizam baratas como hospedeira e fonte de alimento para suas larvas. A vespa aplica duas ferroadas. A primeira, paralisa as patas dianteiras da barata para facilitar a segunda, mais precisa, aplicada na região do cérebro para paralisar definitivamente os reflexos da vítima. A barata então, transforma-se numa espécie de zumbi sem vontade própria para, em seguida, a vespa cortar suas antenas e alimentar-se do seu sangue. A vespa conduz a barata morta-viva para um buraco e coloca um ovo no abdômen do inseto, que simplesmente espera o ovo se abrir depois de um período de três dias. A larva recém-nascida alimenta-se dos órgãos numa sequência que garante que o hospedeiro permaneça vivo até a larva alcançar seu estágio de pupa.
