Dionne Warwick & Friends That's What Friends Are For 1985 #1 Grammy Winner By dibotis "That's What Friends Are For" was originally recorded by Rod Stewart for the 1982 film Night Shift. Dionne Warwick states she was sleeping with the television on. When the end credits rolled on the film, which was being televised at the time, Dionne says she was awakened by the melody and knew immediately that the tune was composed by Bacharach. Dionne was working on her Friends album for Arista and suggested to Burt and Carol that she include the tune on the album and invite friend Stevie Wonder to duet with her. Dionne recorded her vocal track and when Stevie Wonder was recording his track at the session, Elizabeth Taylor, a close friend of Carol's and a fan of Stevie and Dionne, suggested that the theme of the tune would lend itself to be a great fundraiser for the American Foundation for Aids Research (AMFAR). Dionne invited her friends Gladys Knight and Elton John to contribute their vocals to the recording and the rest is musical history. Dionne claims that she ran into Elton John in a Beverly Hills grocery market and asked him to participate in the recording. The song became Bacharach and Bayer-Sager's most successful recording and also marked the first time in Bacharach's career where his composition topped both the Pop and R&B charts. The tune reached # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks in January 1986 and became another RIAA certified Million Seller in the USA for Dionne and a huge international hit. The tune was named by Billboard Magazine as the #1 Single of 1986. The tune raised over $3 million dollars for AMFAR. Dionne & Friends earned a NARAS Grammy award for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group and Bacharach and Bayer-Sager won the Grammy for Song of the Year at the 1987 Grammy Awards ceremony televised worldwide. Dionne Warwick & Spinners Then Came You 1974 #1 Hit By dibotis Dionne Warwick hit # 1 with her 1974 duet with the Spinners. The tune was written by Philip T. Pugh and Sherman Marshall and produced by Philadelphia legend Thom Bell, who also produced Dionne's Track of the Cat album in 1975. Dionne was billed as "Dionne Warwicke" from late 1971 to 1975. Linda Goodman, noted astrologer, convinced Dionne to add the "e" to "balance her name for vibratory reasons." In September 1971, Dionne left Scepter Records and signed with Warner Brothers Records for the most lucrative recording contract ever given a female singer at the time. But, things went downhill from there. Dionne's long time producers and writers Burt Bacharach and Hal David split after producing 1972's "Dionne" album for Warners, leaving Dionne high and dry and sans their music, forcing Dionne to seek other producers for albums to fulfill her contract. Dionne's marriage to actor Bill Elliott crumbled in 1974. Also that year, Dionne filed suit against Bacharach/David for breach of contract. In 1975 Dionne, in her words, "dropped that damn 'e' and things started looking up. In 1979, Bacharach/ David settled out of court with Dionne, for a reported $5 million and shared rights of all Dionne's Bacharach/ David produced recordings.
