This is also the land of royalty, Prince Charles, Princess Diana, and the King and Queen. We'll begin our tour in London, which is the capital of the United Kingdom and its largest city. This is the center of England's culture and commerce and it's also one of the world's most exciting cities. The houses of Parliament are the heart of the British democracy. This is where the debates are held to set Britain's law. Big Ben is a famous clock in the tower above the Houses of Parliament. Across the street is Westminster Abbey, where the monarchs of England are crowned. Nearby is a statue of Churchill the Prime Minister who led Britian during World War II. At Trafalgar Square, there's a monument to Lord Nelson's victory against the French in 1805. Nearby is the National Gallery, which offers stunning collections of Western Art including works from Leonardo da Vinci and Monet. At Piccadily Circus you catch a bus, the subway also known as the tube, or train to explore the city. It's busy here day or night, because of the wide range of activities in this area including shopping, cafes, restaurants and theaters. The Tower of London served as a castle and later as a prison. St Paul's Cathedral is one of the most famous churches in London. It replaced another one, which was destroyed by the great fire of London. We'll see special events such as horse drawn cannons at the Horse Guards Building. The Household Division has guarded British Royalty and the Palaces since the 17th century. It has 7 regiments - the Life Guards the Blues and Royals the Grenadier Coldstream Scots Irish and Welsh. Flowers blossem around Buckingham Palace. This has been the London home of British royalty since 1837 when Queen Victoria ascended the throne. During her reign, Britain literally ruled the world, and this majestic palace is fit for a king or queen. One of the best ways to get a panoramic view of the London is to take a ride on the British Airways London Eye. This Ferris wheel is stunning. At night you almost feel like you are on a space ship, which slowly floats above the city. On a clear sunny day you can see for 25 miles. London has some great parks. St. James Park used to be private, but now it's open to the public. Its lake and tree lined paths were designed in the nineteenth century. Throughout the parks you'll find a wide range of wildlife including squirrels, ducks, pelicans and geese. Make sure you join everyone else for afternoon tea with a wide range of teas and tasty scones, served with jam and clotted cream. Also try fish and chips - one of Britain's most famous dishes. Oxford is the oldest university in Britain and one the best schools in the world. It has over 30 colleges, the largest of which is Christ Church. A deacon here was inspired to create Alice in Wonderland, the adventures of a young girl in an imaginary world. He used this story to entertain the Dean's boy and girl and other children. William Shakespeare was the world's greatest playwright and Stratford upon Avon was his hometown. At the Royal Shakespeare Theater you can see excellent performances of his Plays, famous tragedies such as Romeo and Juliet, and Hamlet. Or see his comedies such as The Merchant of Venice. The Truth According To Wikipedia The Truth according to Wikipedia More info on http://www.vpro.nl/programma/tegenlicht/afleveringen/39405191/ (Dutch) Google or Wikipedia? Those of us who search online -- and who doesn't? -- are getting referred more and more to Wikipedia. For the past two years, this free online "encyclopedia of the people" has been topping the lists of the world's most popular websites. But do we really know what we're using? Backlight plunges into the story behind Wikipedia and explores the wonderful world of Web 2.0. Is it a revolution, or pure hype? Director IJsbrand van Veelen goes looking for the truth behind Wikipedia. Only five people are employed by the company, and all its activities are financed by donations and subsidies. The online encyclopedia that everyone can contribute to and revise is now even bigger than the illustrious Encyclopedia Britannica. Does this spell the end for traditional institutions of knowledge such as Britannica? And should we applaud this development as progress or mourn it as a loss? How reliable is Wikipedia? Do "the people" really hold the lease on wisdom? And since when do we believe that information should be free for all? In this film, "Wikipedians," the folks who spend their days writing and editing articles, explain how the online encyclopedia works. In addition, the parties involved discuss Wikipedia's ethics and quality of content. It quickly becomes clear that there are camps of both believers and critics. Wiki's Truth introduces us to the main players in the debate: Jimmy Wales (founder and head Wikipedian), Larry Sanger (co-founder of Wikipedia, now head of Wiki spin-off Citizendium), Andrew Keen (author of The Cult of the Amateur: How Today's Internet Is Killing Our Culture and Assaulting Our Economy), Phoebe Ayers (a Wikipedian in California), Ndesanjo Macha (Swahili Wikipedia, digital activist), Tim O'Reilly (CEO of O'Reilly Media, the "inventor" of Web 2.0), Charles Leadbeater (philosopher and author of We Think, about crowdsourcing), and Robert McHenry (former editor-in-chief of Encyclopedia Britannica). Opening is a video by Chris Pirillo. The questions surrounding Wikipedia lead to a bigger discussion of Web 2.0, a phenomenon in which the user determines the content. Examples include YouTube, MySpace, Facebook, and Wikipedia. These sites would appear to provide new freedom and opportunities for undiscovered talent and unheard voices, but just where does the boundary lie between expert and amateur? Who will survive according to the laws of this new "digital Darwinism"? Are equality and truth really reconcilable ideals? And most importantly, has the Internet brought us wisdom and truth, or is it high time for a cultural counterrevolution? Broadcast date: April 7, 2008 Direction: IJsbrand van Veelen Interviews: IJsbrand van Veelen / Marijntje Denters / Martijn Kieft Research: William de Bruijn / Marijntje Denters Production: Judith van den Berg Commissioning editors: Jos de Putter / Doke Romeijn Tags: 2.0, amateur, cult, encyclopedia, expert, internet, keen, knowledge, leadbeater, macha, o'reilly, sanger, truth, wales, web, wikipedia 1 Downloads - Last from: (Your Blog here!) |

PSA Texting while Driving U.K. Ad [HD] Tredegar Comprehensive School and Gwent Police (Gwent is located in south-east Wales,UK) present a half hour drama entitled 'COW' --The film that will stop you from texting and driving," with SPECIAL EFFECTS BY ZIPLINE CREATIVE www.ziplinecreative.co.uk (this is a trailer video) COW: Its all about Cassie COWan a nice girl from a Gwent valleys family who kills four people on the road because she used her mobile and lost her concentration for a few seconds. Gwent police is proud to have helped Brynmawr filmmaker Peter Watkins- Hughes in the production, which stars local drama students Jenny Davies as Cassie, and Amy Ingram and Laura Quantick as her friends, Emm and Jules. It is hoped this film will become part of the core schools programme across Wales and the UK and ultimately worldwide. Gwent Police facilitated the films crash scenes because we want to stop ALL drivers, but particularly young and new ones, from causing accidents. Over 300 teenagers from all over Wales were auditioned to take part in the film, nine police vehicles were involved and both the police and air ambulance helicopters featured. State of the art digital special effects were utilised to show the impact of what would happen inside the car during impact. Lyn Samuel, School Liaison Coordinator for Gwent Police said: We worked closely with the production team including the University of Wales Newport, Tredegar Comprehensive School and local partners including the council and Probation Service. The result is a very impactive road safety educational tool to help reduce the number of collisions involving young drivers across Wales. Chief Inspector John Pavett from Gwent Police Roads Policing Unit hopes the serious message in this film will hit home to viewers: Making and receiving calls and texting whilst driving is still happening on roads not just in Gwent but all over the country" Seeing a scenario, like the one Cassie goes through, played out right before your eyes makes you realise how extremely dangerous it can be and what devastating consequences it can have. I hope that after watching this film motorists will think twice before picking up their mobile phone when behind the wheel and realise that a quick reply to a text message or answering a phone call is never worth putting theirs and other peoples lives at risk. It should be noted that here in Wales, we use the word "taster" instead of "teaser" as we're giving you a "taste" of what the full 30-minute video is like. If you find this video compelling and want to see more of our work, please consider subscribing to our channel and favoriting this video.
