On a beau savoir qu'il n'y aura pas d'illusion lyrique, de grand soir des réprouvés, d'état de grâce mitterrandien, on a beau se rappeler que les Français ont dit non au passé plus que oui à l'avenir, on a beau se dire qu'on aura le temps des cerises avec celui des noyaux, cela fait tout de même chaud au cœur . La gauche de nouveau, la gauche enfin, la gauche dans la joie, malgré la crise... Comme un chromo de 36, un souvenir de 81, un rappel de 97, avec un zeste de Commune, un salut à Jaurès, une pensée pour Mendès, une rose pour Mitterrand, tous ces souvenirs sépia qui remontent dans la conscience, sur un air de Marseillaise et quelques notes d'Internationale. Nous sommes dans l'Histoire, la belle histoire du peuple républicain. Derrière ce vote, comme une troupe de légende, on aperçoit, même confusément, même de très loin, les silhouettes de Danton et de Camille Desmoulins, celle de Lamartine et de Victor Hugo, celle de Jaurès et de Blum, celle des soldats de l'an II, des ouvriers de la commune et des militants du Front populaire, le grand héritage du mouvement ouvrier. Pour un soir, pour un jour, laissons parler nos sentiments. Rien ne sera simple, rien ne sera facile, rien ne sera donné, mais il flotte dans l'air, l'espace d'un moment, un parfum d'espérance et de fraternité. Plus de justice pour les humbles, moins d'arrogance chez les puissants : on a l'exigence modeste, mais qu'on nous laisse cet espoir-là, qui justifie dix ans d'attente. Et puis soyons francs : il y a aussi un soulagement. Le vaincu a droit au respect. Mais on ne se voyait pas tirer encore cinq ans... Il faut saluer le vainqueur, qui a mérité sa victoire. "Hollande président ? On croit rêver!", disait Laurent Fabius, condescendant. Non, on ne rêve pas. Ambition souriante et gentillesse d'acier on fait plus que force et que rage d'éléphant, Hollande le courtois a passé en revue tous les jeunes et les vieux ambitieux, taillé sa route sans férir, maîtrisé les épreuves, bien parlé et bien manœuvré, pour conduire la gauche à bon port. Il y a deux ans, il courait seul les rédactions sur son scooter, sa réforme fiscale sous le bras, technique et austère à souhait, tempérant par l'humour la présomption de sa démarche, lui qui ne dépassait pas 3% dans les intentions de vote. Une grande intelligence, une rare ténacité : les rivaux trop sûrs d'eux avaient négligé ces qualités-là, pourtant évidentes à qui le connaissait. Pour l'avoir sous-estimé, ils ont tous mordu la poussière. Sarkozy fut la dernière victime. .. Enfin, les ennuis commencent, comme disait Blum ? A coup sûr. L'épée de Damoclès de la finance n'a pas disparu avec la droite ; l'économie tourne au ralenti, fabriquant surtout des chômeurs ; un peuple maltraité par la mondialisation est tenté par le repli sur le pré-carré national. Marine Le Pen a battu son record de voix et c'est en brandissant l'idée de frontière contre l'immigration que Nicolas Sarkozy a refait une partie de son retard. On sent la France au bord d'une réaction nationaliste comparable à celle des années 30. La nation si bien analysée par Jean Daniel dans son dernier livre est la meilleure et la pire des choses. Elle peut devenir la pire, si le gouvernement de gauche ne donne pas un sens, une direction, à la France du nouveau siècle.
