Como ingeniero e inventor, Leonardo desarrolló ideas muy adelantadas a su tiempo, tales como el helicóptero, el carro de combate, el submarino y el automóvil. Como científico, Leonardo da Vinci hizo progresar mucho el conocimiento en las áreas de anatomía, la ingeniería civil, la óptica y la hidrodinámica. Nació en 1452 en Vinci, siendo hijo ilegítimo de un notario florentino. Se crió en Florencia y aprendió en el taller de Verrocchio. Con 20 años ya es maestro independiente, interesándose mucho por descubrir nuevas técnicas para trabajar al óleo, sin embargo, continuó ligado al taller de Verrocchio hasta prácticamente su marcha de Florencia. Su reputación crecía y los encargos aumentaban. En 1482 se traslada a Milán, ofreciendo sus servicios a Ludovico Sforza, Duque de Milán. Había marchado a Milán como embajador de Florencia, dentro del plan de los Medici de difusión del arte florentino como motivo de prestigio e instrumento de propaganda cultural. En Milán estuvo durante 17 años, trabajando en variados proyectos de todo tipo, tanto artísticos como científicos, en los que el deseo de experimentar era su principal objetivo. Esto no le impedía realizar encargos ocasionales para Florencia, que frecuentemente dejaba inacabados. Su producción estuvo marcada por el interés hacia el claroscuro y el sfumato, la técnica con la que difumina los contornos, consiguiendo una excelente sensación atmosférica como se aprecia en su obra más famosa, la Gioconda. Hacia el 1490 creó una academia que llevaba su nombre, en la que durante unos años enseñó sus conocimientos, anotando todas sus investigaciones en pequeños tratados. Pintó el fresco de la La última cena (1494-1498) para el convento dominico de Santa Maria delle Grazie. Leonardo representó una ruptura con los modelos universales establecidos durante el Quattrocento. Se opuso al concepto de "belleza ideal", defendiendo la imitación de la naturaleza con fidelidad, sin tratar de mejorarla, y así contempla la fealdad y lo grotesco, como en sus dibujos de personajes deformes y cómicos, considerados las primeras caricaturas de la historia del arte. Su dominio del color y la atmósfera le hace también el primero en ser capaz de pintar el aire. La perspectiva aérea o atmosférica, como hoy se conoce, es una característica inconfundible de su obra, en especial de los paisajes, y fue el primero en considerar que la distancia se llenaba con aire y que éste hacía que los objetos lejanos perdiesen nitidez y se viesen azulados. Tras su muerte, Leonardo se ha convertido en el paradigma de "hombre del Renacimiento", dedicado a múltiples investigaciones científicas y artísticas. Sus obras han determinado la evolución del arte en los siglos posteriores. Como ingeniero e inventor, Leonardo desarrolló ideas muy adelantadas a su tiempo, tales como el helicóptero, el carro de combate, el submarino y el automóvil. Como científico, Leonardo da Vinci hizo progresar mucho el conocimiento en las áreas de anatomía, la ingeniería civil, la óptica y la hidrodinámica. Nació en 1452 en Vinci, siendo hijo ilegítimo de un notario florentino. Se crió en Florencia y aprendió en el taller de Verrocchio. Con 20 años ya es maestro independiente, interesándose mucho por descubrir nuevas técnicas para trabajar al óleo, sin embargo, continuó ligado al taller de Verrocchio hasta prácticamente su marcha de Florencia. Su reputación crecía y los encargos aumentaban. En 1482 se traslada a Milán, ofreciendo sus servicios a Ludovico Sforza, Duque de Milán. Había marchado a Milán como embajador de Florencia, dentro del plan de los Medici de difusión del arte florentino como motivo de prestigio e instrumento de propaganda cultural. En Milán estuvo durante 17 años, trabajando en variados proyectos de todo tipo, tanto artísticos como científicos, en los que el deseo de experimentar era su principal objetivo. Esto no le impedía realizar encargos ocasionales para Florencia, que frecuentemente dejaba inacabados. Su producción estuvo marcada por el interés hacia el claroscuro y el sfumato, la técnica con la que difumina los contornos, consiguiendo una excelente sensación atmosférica como se aprecia en su obra más famosa, la Gioconda. Hacia el 1490 creó una academia que llevaba su nombre, en la que durante unos años enseñó sus conocimientos, anotando todas sus investigaciones en pequeños tratados. Pintó el fresco de la La última cena (1494-1498) para el convento dominico de Santa Maria delle Grazie. Leonardo representó una ruptura con los modelos universales establecidos durante el Quattrocento. Se opuso al concepto de "belleza ideal", defendiendo la imitación de la naturaleza con fidelidad, sin tratar de mejorarla, y así contempla la fealdad y lo grotesco, como en sus dibujos de personajes deformes y cómicos, considerados las primeras caricaturas de la historia del arte. Su dominio del color y la atmósfera le hace también el primero en ser capaz de pintar el aire. La perspectiva aérea o atmosférica, como hoy se conoce, es una característica inconfundible de su obra, en especial de los paisajes, y fue el primero en considerar que la distancia se llenaba con aire y que éste hacía que los objetos lejanos perdiesen nitidez y se viesen azulados. Tras su muerte, Leonardo se ha convertido en el paradigma de "hombre del Renacimiento", dedicado a múltiples investigaciones científicas y artísticas. Sus obras han determinado la evolución del arte en los siglos posteriores.
