Robert Palmer - I Didn't Mean To Turn You On By Ichnos71x2 1986) The career of blue-eyed soul singer Robert Palmer was a study in style versus substance. While the performer's earliest work won praise for its skillful assimilation of rock, R&B, and reggae sounds, his records typically sold poorly, and he achieved his greatest notoriety as an impeccably dressed lounge lizard. By the mid-'80s, however, Palmer became a star, although his popularity owed less to the strength of his material than to his infamous music videos: taking their cue from the singer's suave presence, Palmer's clips established him as a dapper, suit-and-tie lady's man who performed his songs backed by a band comprised of leggy models, much to the delight of viewers who made him one of MTV's biggest success stories. Born Alan Palmer on January 19, 1949, in Batley, England, he spent much of his childhood living on the island of Malta before permanently returning to Britain at the age of 19 to sing with the Alan Bown Set. A year later he joined Dada, a 12-piece, Stax-influenced soul group which soon changed its name to Vinegar Joe; after three LPs with the band -- a self-titled effort and Rock'n'Roll Gypsies, both issued in 1972, and 1973's Six Star General -- Palmer exited to mount a solo career, and debuted in 1974 with Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley, recorded with members of Little Feat and the Meters. With 1975's Pressure Drop, he tackled reggae, a trend furthered following a move to Nassau prior to 1978's Double Fun, which featured Palmer's first hit, "Every Kinda People." With 1979's self-produced Secrets, his music moved into more rock-oriented territory, as typified by the single "Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)." Palmer's stylistic experimentation continued with 1980's Clues, a foray into synth-pop aided by Gary Numan and Talking Heads' Chris Frantz which yielded the club hit "Looking for Clues." After 1983's Pride, Palmer teamed with the Duran Duran side project Power Station, scoring hits with the singles "Some Like It Hot" and "Get It On" (a T. Rex cover), which returned the singer to overt rock territory. After exiting the band prior to a planned tour, Palmer recorded the 1985 solo album Riptide, a sleek collection of guitar rock which scored a number one hit with "Addicted to Love," the first in a string of videos which offered him in front of a bevy of beautiful women. The follow-up, "I Didn't Mean to Turn You On," continued to play with the sex symbol image and hit number two, as did "Simply Irresistible," the first single from 1988's Heavy Nova. By 1990's Don't Explain, Palmer returned to the eclecticism of his earliest material; without any attendant soft-core videos, sales plummeted, but he stuck to his guns for 1992's Ridin' High, a collection of Tin Pan Alley and cabaret chestnuts. Two years later, Palmer's wide array of worldbeat influences cropped up again on Honey, which also featured guitar work from Extreme axeman Nino Bettencourt. Woke Up Laughing followed in 1998, it was an adventurous, if somewhat odd, collection of non-hit album tracks remixed and in some cases re-recorded.Rhythm & Blues, a slick set of adult contemporary pop, came out in 1999 to lukewarm sales and reviews. After a live album in 2001, Palmer bounced back with the future blues of 2003's Drive. However, Palmer had little time to enjoy it's release. On September 26, 2003 he died suddenly after suffering a heart attack. He was 54. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide Tags: 80, 80s, classic, clip, didn't, mean, music, musica, on, palmer, retro, robert, sexy, song, to, turn, video, videoclips, videomusic, you 2 Downloads - Last from: http://downthisvideo.com/tag/sexy (Your Blog here!) |

Joe Jackson - Steppin' Out By Ichnos71x2 1982) Joe Jackson cut a striking figure on his debut album: Look Sharp! portrays an angry young tunesmith, a messenger of the new wave who sends stinging telegrams to former lovers ("Is She Really Going Out With Him?") and the world at large ("Sunday Papers"). Jackson displayed a light-fingered pop touch that's entirely his own. I'm the Man feels rushed in comparison, but its best moments -- "It's Different for Girls," "Don't Wanna Be Like That," "Friday" -- are on a par with its predecessor's peaks. Ironically, the borderline-nasty wit and unchecked exuberance of these albums quickly gave way to self-seriousness and a middlebrow disdain of rock itself. Jackson turned into a bigger crank than his two old rivals Parker and Costello put together -- and that's saying a lot! The remainder of his in-print catalogue is marked by restless wandering from one musical genre to another. Sometimes the experiments work brilliantly; more often, they simply bewilder. Twenty years before Brian Setzer made a mint covering Louis Prima, Jackson was mining the same territory on Jumpin' Jive, one of his best stylistic jaunts. He doesn't really have the pipes for '40s R&B, but he does a fair job of conjuring up the horny "Saturday Night Fish Fry" spirit of Louis Jordan and His Tympany Five. Night and Day takes a dance-floor spin through Spanish Harlem, and oddly enough, the collision of salsafied disco with Jackson's sour-milk worldview catches fire. (It also garnered him his only Top 10 single, "Steppin' Out.") Body and Soul's "Happy Ending" and "Be My Number Two" hark back to the incisive cynicism of Jackson's breakthrough albums; the rest of the record, which incorporates elements of jazz and even musical theater, could do with a little less politeness. Big World was clearly meant to be a big deal -- three sides of all-new material, recorded live in front of a New York audience, with a solid-rocking quartet sound -- but few of Jackson's awkward topical missives find their target, despite the crisp musical accompaniment. Following two more rock-oriented albums, 1989's Blaze of Glory and 1991's Laughter and Lust, neither currently in print nor especially memorable, Jackson began to indulge his Serious Composer side, with mixed results: the intermittently diverting Night Music, the respectable Symphony No. 1, and the god-awful "song cycle" Heaven & Hell. Next move? Revisiting past glories. The string-suffused Night and Day II is fine overall, but Jackson's self-cannibalism (epitomized by the musical quotes from "Steppin' Out" in "Stay") is disheartening. Volume 4, on the other hand, is an unqualified treat. Reuniting with his original band -- the guys who recorded Look Sharp! and I'm the Man -- Jackson sounds revitalized on the tartly tuneful "Take It Like a Man" and "Awkward Age." The live Afterlife is even better, combining the best Volume 4 tracks with '70s and '80s nuggets. The two other recent live albums, Summer in the City and Two Rainy Nights, each recorded with a different band, are enchanting trips down the Jackson back roads. Either of the existing best-of compilations would serve as a good introduction to his catalogue; the single-disc 20th Century Masters is cheaper, the double-disc Steppin' Out more comprehensive. Billy Idol - Eyes Without a Face By Ichnos71x2 1984) The video was directed by David Mallet and begins with a close-up of Idol's sneering face, interspersed with three unidentifiable ('faceless') female singers. During the song's bridge, the scene changes to Steve Stevens shredding on guitar and Idol in familiar punk poses while dancing in a flaming octagon surrounded by hooded acolytes. The imagery of the video contrasts with the relative softness of the song and its lyrics of longing. Reportedly filmed in a marathon 30-hour session, the video was released in June 1984 and subsequently nominated for MTV Video Music Awards for "Best Editing" and "Best Cinematography". _____________________________________ Billy Idol makes his feature film debut in The Doors. Idol first burst onto the world music scene in the mid-'70s as lead singer of the British punk band Generation X. When he saw that the punk movement was stagnating, Idol left London and relocated to New York. While recording his self-titled album in 1982, he formed a partnership with producer Keith Forsey, and the two have worked together ever since, producing a string of hits beginning with Hot in the City, White Wedding and Dancing With Myself. The release in 1983 of Rebel Yell, an album which dominated the airwaves for more than a year, earned Idol a Grammy nomination and three huge hits -- the title track, Eyes Without a Face and Flesh for Fantasy. The album Whiplash Smile followed (which contained the singles Sweet Sixteen and To Be a Lover, the latter earning Idol another Grammy nomination for best male rock vocal in 1987). Next came Vital Idol," which included a No. 1 smash hit for Idol, the live version of Mony Mony. In 1990, Idol had just completed Charmed Life when he suffered a near-fatal motorcycle accident which forced the cancellation of his original role in The Doors. Director Oliver Stone found another part for Idol, and the character of Cat is actually portrayed on crutches. Five leg operations later, Idol rebounded from the accident with an extensive world tour which began in August of 1990. To date, Charmed Life has sold in excess of 1 million copies and has produced three hit singles for the rock star: Cradle of Love, L.A. Woman and Prodigal Blues. Idol also received a 1990 MTV Video Award for the David Fincher-produced Cradle of Love video. Glenn Frey - You Belong To The City By Ichnos71x2 1985) "You Belong to the City" is a rock song written by Glenn Frey (of the Eagles) and Jack Tempchin, and recorded by Frey during his solo career. It was written specifically for the television show Miami Vice in 1985. The song nearly reached the top of the charts, peaking at #2 on the U.S. charts. This song, along with Jan Hammer's "Miami Vice Theme", helped the Miami Vice soundtrack album reach the top spot of the charts for 11 weeks in 1985, making it the best-selling album of the year and the most successful TV soundtrack of all time. Frey performs this song live when touring with the Eagles. References in popular culture. The rapper/record producer Jay-Z sampled part of "You Belong to the City" for his single, "The City Is Mine". The song was used in a video tribute to the 1986 World Champion New York Mets at Shea Stadium in August 2006. An instrumental version of the song was used on an episode of the FOX television series Married with Children, when Al and Steve went out looking for a Barbie doll they accidentally sold which belonged to Marcie. A re-recorded version of the song was featured on an episode of the Comedy Central animated television series, Drawn Together, titled "A Very Special Drawn Together Afterschool Special". In the episode, the cast are participating in a role-playing to help Xandir, a gay video game adventurer, tell his parents he is gay. The song is featured when Xandir's role-playing parents are searching for Xandir, who has run away, and at the end of the episode, when the cast join hands on a stage and bow to the audience in a parody of the musical Cats. ______________________________________ Solo career. After the Eagles disbanded, Frey found solo success in the 1980s, especially with two #2 hits: the soundtrack songs "The Heat Is On" (from Beverly Hills Cop) and "You Belong to the City" (from the television series Miami Vice, the soundtrack to which stayed on top of the U.S. album charts for 11 weeks in 1985). His other contribution to the soundtrack, "Smuggler's Blues", hit #12 on the Hot 100. Frey also contributed the song "Flip City" to the Ghostbusters II soundtrack, and "Part of Me, Part of You" to the soundtrack for Thelma and Louise. During his solo career he had 12 songs in the U.S. Top One Hundred. Eleven of those were written with Jack Tempchin who also wrote Peaceful Easy Feeling. In the late 1990s, Frey founded a record company with attorney Peter Lopez called Mission Records. Lionel Richie - Say You, Say Me By Ichnos71x2 1986) "Say You, Say Me" is a Golden Globe and Academy Award winning song written and recorded by Lionel Richie for the film White Nights starring Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines. The single hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on December 21, 1985. The track is not available on the soundtrack album to the film because Motown Records did not want Richie's first single since the Can't Slow Down album to appear on another record label. It finally appeared on the Dancing on the Ceiling album released in 1986. The song listed at #74 on Billboard's Greatest Songs of all time. ______________________________________ Solo career. He released his self-titled debut in 1982. The album hit #3 on the music charts and sold over 4 million copies. His 1983 follow up album, Can't Slow Down, sold over twice as many copies and won two Grammy Awards including Album Of The Year propelling him into the first rank of international superstars. The album spawned the #1 hit "All Night Long", a Caribbean-flavored dance number that was promoted by a colorful music video produced by former Monkee, Michael Nesmith. Several more Top 10 hits followed, the most successful of which was the ballad "Hello" (1984), a sentimental love song that showed how far Richie had moved from his R&B roots. Now described by one critic as 'the black Barry Manilow', in 1985 Richie wrote and performed a suitably soothing theme song, "Say You, Say Me", for the film White Nights, winning an Oscar for his efforts. He also collaborated with Michael Jackson on the charity single "We Are the World" by USA for Africa. In 1986, Richie released Dancing on the Ceiling, his last widely popular album, which produced a run of US and UK hits including "Say You, Say Me", "Dancing on the Ceiling," and "Se La". The title selection, which revived the lively dance sound of "All Night Long(All Night)," was accompanied by another striking video, a feature that played an increasingly important role in Richie's solo career. The critical consensus was that this album represented nothing more than a consolidation of his previous work, though Richie's collaboration with the country group Alabama on "Deep River Woman" did break new ground. By 1987, Richie was exhausted from his work schedule and after a controversial year laid low taking care for his father in Alabama. His father, Lionel Sr., died in 1990. He made his return to recording and performing following the release of his first greatest-hits collection, Back to Front, in 1992. Since then, his ever-more relaxed schedule has kept his recording and live work to a minimum. He broke the silence in 1996 with Louder Than Words, on which he resisted any change of style or the musical fashion-hopping of the past decade. Instead, he stayed with his chosen path of well-crafted soul music, which in the intervening years has become known as Contemporary R&B. His albums in the 1990s such as Louder Than Words and Time all failed to achieve the previous decade's commercial success. Some of his recent work such as the album Renaissance has returned to his older style, achieving success in Europe, but only modest notice in the United States. Since 2004, he has produced a total of six Top 40 singles in the UK. Olivia Newton-John - Physical By lagabru "Physical" is a 1981 song written by Steve Kipner and Terry Shaddick and performed by Olivia Newton-John. Recorded in early 1981, it first rose to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in America in November 1981 and stayed there for ten weeks, until the end of January 1982. In terms of chart placement, it was the most popular single of her career, as well as her final number-one (to date). Billboard ranked it as the number one pop single of 1982 (since the chart year for 1982 actually began in November of 1981), and it was also the most successful song on the Hot 100 during the entire decade of the 1980s. The single, slightly edgier than she had been known for in the past (such as her songs from Grease and her ballad "I Honestly Love You"), proved to be immensely popular both in America and in the United Kingdom, despite the fact that the song was censored and even banned by some radio stations, particularly Adult Contemporary stations; in spite of Newton-John's status as the reigning queen of soft-rock music at the time, "Physical" peaked at only number twenty-nine on the AC chart (its follow-up, the slightly softer-edged "Make a Move on Me," found more acceptance at AC radio and went to number six AC as well as number five pop.) The song was a big dance hit and spawned a music video. The revamped acoustic version of the song was released on the 2002 Olivia duet album as a bonus track. The video featured a lusty Olivia, dressed in a tight leotard, working out in a gym with several muscular young men who, despite her best efforts, continue to ignore her. The gym setting may have been partly an attempt to divert attention from the overt sexual connotations of the term "physical". This was further emphasised by the twist comedy ending of the video, when the men who had been oblivious to Newton-John's advances are ultimately revealed to be gay (this was also a source of controversy; MTV frequently cut the ending when it aired the video, and the sometimes sensuous nature of the video also led to it being banned outright by some broadcasters in Canada and the United Kingdom). The video won a Grammy Award for Video Of The Year in 1983. The song Physical was banned in South Africa for its suggestive lyrics. Like her first number-one single, "Physical" sold over two million copies, being certified platinum.
