GMAT Prep - Math - Algebra - Solving Linear Equations with One Variable by Knewton Go to http://www.knewton.com/gmat/ for hundreds of GMAT math and verbal concepts, thousands of practice problems and much more. Knewton GMAT is a GMAT prep course that redefines everything you thought you knew about online learning. When solving linear equations with one variable, we want to isolate that variable on one side of the equation and have a constant on the other side of the equation. To get from the equation as given to an equation in this form, you'll need to perform a series of operations. At each step, make sure that any operation you perform on one side of the equation is performed on the other side as well. Let's take a look at some operations that are performed on both sides of the equation. Add or subtract from both sides: With x + y = y + 2, subtract y from both sides and you're left with x = 2. Multiply both sides: With 0.5x = 2, multiply both sides by 2 and you get x = 4. Divide both sides: With 7x = 21, divide both sides by 7 and you get x = 3. Square both sides (or raise to another power): With √x = 17, square both sides to get x = 289. Take the square root of both sides (or another root): With X^4 = 81, take the fourth root of both sides and you get x = 3 or x = -3. Remember that when you take an even root of a positive number, the result can be either positive or negative. Let's look at an example. x^2 + 8 = 24. Subtract 8 from both sides to get x^2 = 16. To isolate x, take the square root of both sides and you get x = 4 or x = -4. Let's look at another example. (7m -- 6)/2 = 12 + m. First, since we see that there is a denominator on the left hand side, multiply both sides by 2 to eliminate this denominator. You'll get 7m -- 6 = 24 + 2m. Next, bring all of the variables to one side by subtracting 2m from both sides. You'll get 5m -- 6 = 24. Next, get all of the constants on one side by adding 6 to both sides. You'll get 5m = 30.
