Indian Vedic Rock: Agnee (Agni) - Mrityunjaya - Tandav
By feloniousvindaloo

The band Agni is one of the founders of the modern Indian Rock Music scene. This song is "Tandav" from the album "Mrityunyaja" (2002). The album could be considered to be one of the forerunners of Vedic Metal, with its Sanskrit lyrics, religious themes and the amazing fusion of Indian and Western music. It is a very rare CD.

edit!- I've been told that the band members have released all their old music for free! It can be downloaded at:
http://72hoytstreet.net/music/agni/

The band has now evolved into an entirely new one, called 'Agnee'. Please check out their website at:

About the song:
Tandav is a salutation to Lord Shiva and begins with a prayer to the magnificent Shiva from the Rudra. The song is a humble tribute from a mortal man to the Eternal One who is the creator, sustainer and destroyer.

The video was shot in Chennai with some indoor sets with South Indian professional dancers involved. The video basically depicts the Invoking of Shiva and settling back towards the end, in peace.

"Tandav" Lyrics:
Om sahana vavatu

Raise the foot and set the Trident, talk to me my

Dakshinamurthy Ashtakam (Sing along version with English translation)
By vvvvarun

Adi Sankara has written very many great Stotras (prayers) but here is a unique prayer, which is not only a prayer but the summary of all the philosophy that he has taught. Even during his time, this stotra was difficult to comprehend and it became necessary for one of his disciples called Sureshwaracharya to write a commentary called Manasollasa to this stotra. There are large number of books and commentaries on this commentary itself.

Below is the English translation for the Sanskrit verses.

1) Similar to the image of a town as seen in the mirror,
When one sees the image of the world within him,
The world appears as if it is outside.
It is similar to his seeing due to illusion,
During the state of sleep,
That the one real fact appears as many different truths,
And he realizes ,when he wakes up and sees the reality,
That he is really the one and only one soul.
Salutation to the God facing the south,
Who is the greatest teacher.

2) Like the germ inside the seed is its part ,
But becomes different after development
The many places and time which are before us ,
Are drawn by illusion in the board of life in a peculiar manner,
By a great savant or an expert Siddha,
Who can create them as per their will,
Salutation to the God facing the south,
Who is the greatest teacher.

3) He who exists as the real light of truth,
And shines in the false world of appearance,
And He who teaches disciples the great saying,
Thou art that after realizing its import,
Gets away from this cycle of life and death.
Salutation to the God facing the south,
Who is the greatest teacher.

4) Like the light emanating from a lamp,
Kept in a pot with many holes,
Goes out in all directions,
In the person in whom the wisdom goes out
Through the openings of ear , eye , mouth and thought,
And when that person realizes that I know myself,
This whole universe shines after Him alone ,
Who shines in the consciousness as the knower.
Salutation to the God facing the south,
Who is the greatest teacher.

5) Those great philosophers, who think that,
The body , the soul and the fickle intellect,
The concept of emptiness and all other nothingness,
Are nothing but themselves,
Are similar to the women children , blind and the ignorant.
It is only He who can destroy, this veil of ignorance,
And wake us up from this state of deceit.
Salutation to the God facing the south,
Who is the greatest teacher.

6) Similar to the Sun when being masked by the serpent Rahu,
Knows that it was existing , once the eclipse is over
That man whose senses are suppressed
When he is asleep,
Because of the veil of illusion,
Realizes that he was in the state of sleep,
When he wakes up.
Salutation to the God facing the south,
Who is the greatest teacher.

7) Salutations to him who shines and exhibits,
Himself by the beatific Chinmudhra of the hand,
That he exists within the humans as self,
Forever and non changing,
Even during the changing states of childhood, youth and old age
And even during the states of sleep, dream and wakefulness.
Salutation to the God facing the south,
Who is the greatest teacher.

8) The world sees as cause and effect,
The differences between us and our lord,
The distinction between teacher and the taught,
The distinction between father and son,
And so the man is confused by illusion,
And believes in these differences,
During the times of dream and wakefulness.
Salutation to the God facing the south,
Who is the greatest teacher.

9) To the sake of which supreme Brahman,
The universe is shining as self ,
Which is Movable and immovable , with its aspects?
Of water, fire, air, space,
The sun, moon and the individual soul ,
And also to those who examine the truth behind ,
The meaning of this universe and find ,
That it Consists of nothing but,
The God who is every where.
Salutation to the God facing the south,
Who is the greatest teacher.

10) The concept of the Athma,
Which is explained in this poem of praise,
Hearing which , understanding which,
Meditating which and singing which,
One would attain the state of the godliness,
And the great state of self realization,
And also you would get the eight powers of occult ,
Without any problems in between.

Shiva Tandava Stotram
By 314159265352

Maha Shiva Ratri Songs
शिव ताण्डव स्तोत्रम् - Shiva Tandava Stotram

Meanings (only english text because of lack of space)
*1*
With his neck, consecrated by the flow of water flowing from the
thick forest-like locks of hair, and on the neck, where the lofty snake
is hanging garland, and the Damaru drum making the sound of
Damat Damat Damat Damat, Lord Siva did the auspicious dance of
Tandava and may He shower prosperity on us all.

*2*
I have a very deep interest in Lord Siva, whose head is glorified by
the rows of moving waves of the celestial river Ganga, agitating in
the deep well of his hair-locks, and who has the brilliant fire flaming
on the surface of his forehead, and who has the crescent moon as a
jewel on his head.

*3*
May my mind seek happiness in the Lord Siva, in whose mind all the
living beings of the glorious universe exist, who is the sportive
companion of Parvati (daughter of the mountain king), who controls
invincible hardships with the flow of his compassionate look, who is
all-pervasive (the directions are his clothes).

*4*
May I seek wonderful pleasure in Lord Siva, who is supporter
of all life, who with his creeping snake with reddish brown hood and
with the luster of his gem on it spreading out variegated colors on the
beautiful faces of the maidens of directions, who is covered with a
glittering upper garment made of the skin of a huge intoxicated
elephant.

*5*
May Lord Siva give us prosperity, who has the moon (relative of the
Cakora bird) as his head-jewel, whose hair is tied by the red snake-
garland, whose foot-stool is grayed by the flow of dust from the
flowers from the rows of heads of all the Gods, Indra/Vishnu and others.

*6*
May we get the wealth of Siddhis from Siva's locks of hair, which
devoured the God of Love with the sparks of the fire flaming in His
forehead, who is bowed by all the celestial leaders, who is beautiful
with a crescent moon

*7*
My interest is in Lord Siva, who has three eyes, who has offered the
powerful God of Love into the fire, flaming Dhagad Dhagad on the
flat surface of his forehead who is the sole expert artist of drawing
decorative lines on the tips of breasts of Parvati, the daughter of
the mountain king.

*8*
May Lord Siva give us prosperity, who bears the burden of this
universe, who is lovely with the moon, who is red wearing the skin,
who has the celestial river Ganga, whose neck is dark as midnight
of new moon night covered by many layers of clouds.

*9*
I pray to Lord Siva, whose neck is tied with the luster of the temples
hanging on the neck with the glory of the fully-bloomed blue lotuses
which looked like the blackness (sins) of the universe, who is the
killer of Manmatha, who destroyed Tripuras, who destroyed the
bonds of worldly life, who destroyed the sacrifice, who destroyed the
demon Andhaka, the destroyer of the elephants, and who controlled
the God of death, Yama.

*10*
I pray to Lord Siva, who has bees flying all over because of the sweet
honey from the beautiful bunch of auspicious Kadamba flowers, who
is the killer of Manmatha, who destroyed Tripuras, who destroyed the
bonds of worldly life, who destroyed the sacrifice, who destroyed the
demon Andhaka, the killer of the elephants, and who controlled the
God of death, Yama.

*11*
Lord Siva, whose dance of Tandava is in tune with the series of loud
sounds of drum making Dhimid Dhimid sounds, who has the fire
on the great forehead, the fire that is spreading out because of the
breath of the snake wandering in whirling motion in the glorious sky.

*12*
When will I worship Lord Sadasiva (eternally auspicious) God, with
equal vision towards the people and an emperor, and a blade of grass
and lotus-like eye, towards both friends and enemies, towards the
valuable gem and some lump of dirt, towards a snake and a garland
and towards varied ways of the world

*13*
When will I be happy, living in the hollow place near the celestial
river, Ganga, carrying the folded hands on my head all the time, with
my bad thinking washed away, and uttering the mantra of Lord Siva
and devoted in the God with glorious forehead with vibrating eyes.

*14*
Whoever reads, remembers and says this best stotra as it is said here,
gets purified for ever, and obtains devotion in the great Guru Siva.
For this devotion, there is no other way. Just the mere thought of
Lord Siva indeed removes the delusion.

Suryaashtakam - Album: Sacred Chants (with English translation)
By vvvvarun

Pantheism has been a very strong part of Hindu relegion. They gave form to the several aspects of nature and worshipped them. Of these, they recognized Sun God as the one who is the primeval cause of nature. They believed worshipping Sun God would clear off all their sins. He was the son of Sage Kasyapa and Adhithi. He rode a huge chariot driven by Aruna. The God f death Yama and the planet Saturn were his sons. This beautiful octet is a prayer addressed to the sun god.

Below is the Sanskrit lyrics and its English translation.

1
Adhi deva Namasthubhyam,,
Praseeda mama Bhaskara,
Divakara namasthubhyam,
Prabha kara Namosthu they.

Salutations to the primeval God,
Please be kind to me , he who creates the morn.
Salutations to you the creator of day,
Salutations to you the creator of light.

2

Swetha padma dharma devam,
Tham suryam pranamamyaham

My salutations to the Sun God,

Who is the brightest of lights,
Who is the son of Sage Kashyapa,
And who wears the white lotus flower.

3
Lohitham Radha maroodam,
Sarva loka pithamaham,
Maha papa haram devam,
Tham suryam pranamamyaham

My salutations to the Sun God,
Who is reddish brown in colour,
Who rides on a chariot,
Who has created all the worlds,
And who is the god who kills all the sins

4
Trigunyam cha maha sooram,
Brahma Vishnu maheswaram,
Maha papaharam devam,
Tham suryam pranamamyaham

My salutations to the Sun God,
Who is blessed with three fold qualities,
Who is a greatest of heroes,
Who has within himself the great trinity.
And who is the god who kills all sins.

5
Bramhitham teja punjam cha,
Vayu makasa meva cha,

And who is the god who has one great Wheel.

7
Viswesam Viswa karthaaram,
Maha Theja pradheepanam,
Maha papa haram devam,
Tham suryam pranamamyaham

My salutations to the Sun God,
Who is the Lord of all universe,
Who created all the universe,
And who is the God who can destroy all sins.

8
Sri Vishnum jagathaam nadam,
Jnana Vijnana mokshadham,
Maha papa haram devam,
Tham suryam pranamamyaham

My salutations to the Sun God,
Who is the lord of peace,
Who is the Lord of this world
Who showers on us knowledge, science and salvation,
And who is the God who can destoy all sins.

Phala Sruthi

Suryashtakam idham nithyam,
Gruha peeda pranasanam,
Aputhro labhathe puthram,
Daridhro dhanavan Bhaveth.

If one recites daily this octet on Sun God,
The sufferings of his house will vanish,
If he does not have a son will get one,
And if he is poor , he would become wealthy.

Aamisham madhu panam cha,
Ya karothi raver dhine,
Saptha janma bhaved rogi,
Janma janma dharidhratha.

The one who eats meat ,
Or drinks alchholic drinks on Sundays,
Will become sick for seven births,
And would be poor from birth to death.

Sthree thails madhu maamsani.,
Yasth yejathu raver dhine,
Na vyadhi soka dharidhryam,
Surya lokam sa gachathi.

One who forsakes on all Sundays,
Woman oil bath , meat and drinks,
Will never be sick nor sad nor poor.
And would reach the land of sun after death.

God is Love - Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya - Hare Krishna Mantra Bhajan
By me2super

Meaning of this powerful mantra:
http://vedabase.net/sb/2/1/invocation/en

The opening canto of Srimad Bhagavatam begins with "om namo bhagavate vasudevaya".
http://srimadbhagavatam.com/1/1/1/en1

This first verse of Bhagavata Purana begins with the phrase "O my Lord, Krishna, son of Vasudeva, O all-pervading Lord, I offer my respectful obeisances unto You, the Absolute Truth and the primeval cause of all causes of the creation, sustenance and destruction of the manifested universes" (om namo bhagavate vasudevaya janmady asya yatah 'nvayad itaratas cartheshv abhijnah svarat). Vyasa employs the words "janma-adi -- creation, sustenance and destruction; asya -- of the manifested universes; yatah -- from whom;", which establish that Krishna is the Absolute Truth. This is clear testimony of the author's own conclusion that the ultimate goal of all Vedic knowledge is Krishna.
