Genie By maeghan1edits Most people know about Genie or at least have learned about her briefly in school. She was found in the early 70s at age thirteen, having spent most of her life in almost total isolation. I made this video using parts of actual footage of her as she progressed, and my point is really to try to bring attention to what a tragedy her life was. Not only was she severely abused by her family, but after making progress with her doctors and therapists she was returned to her mother to live in the same house she'd been abused in. After her mother realized she couldn't care for her, Genie was placed in foster care and group homes, where she regressed. Worst of all, her mother faught to make sure that the doctors and therapists that cared so deeply for her (and who had become like parents to her) were not able to see her anymore. The song I used is Radiohead's "Fake Plastic Trees", which may seem out of place, but bear with me: Genie had an obsession with collecting anything plastic. She loved playing with and organizing plastic objects. I know the song isn't really about that, but every time I hear it I think about her and the comfort she got from her plastic collections. This is a story I think everyone needs to know about, not just because she taught us about development and language but because we were unable to save her from further abuse. "In Loving Memory"- A Heath Ledger Tribute By Infinitusmagus This is a tribute to the brilliant and inspired Heath Ledger who passed away on 1/22/08 at 3:26 pm eastern standard time. My sister helped with this tribute by picking out the song, helping me with the picture arrangement, but mostly just by sitting next to me. I can tell you, it was hard making this video. Probably one of the hardest things I ever had to do. Between bouts of silent weeping, the anger and depression, and (sometimes) just staring at his picture on the computer screen, it took me all of 8 hours to finish it. The world has lost an amazing person today and it is doubly hard because he was so young and talented. I hope you enjoy this video and find some sort of peace in it. Bee Gees - Tragedy By worldmusicHE777 The Bee Gees were a singing trio of brothers — Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb. They were born on the Isle of Man to English parents, lived in Chorlton, Manchester, England and during their childhood years moved to Brisbane, Australia, where they began their musical careers. Their worldwide success came when they returned to England and signed with producer Robert Stigwood. The multiple award-winning group was successful for most of its forty years of recording music, but it had two distinct periods of exceptional success: as a harmonic "soft rock" act in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and as the foremost stars of the disco music era in the late 1970s. No matter the style, the Bee Gees sang three-part tight harmonies that were instantly recognizable; as brothers, their voices blended perfectly, in the same way that The Everly Brothers and Beach Boys did. Barry sang lead on many songs, and an R&B falsetto introduced in the disco years; Robin provided the clear vibrato lead that was a hallmark of their pre-disco music; Maurice sang high and low harmonies throughout their career. The three brothers co-wrote most of their hits, and they said that they felt like they became 'one person' when they were writing. The group's name was retired after Maurice died in January 2003. The Bee Gees were inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997; fittingly, the presenter of the award to "Britain's first family of harmony" was Brian Wilson, leader of the Beach Boys, America's first family of rock harmony. Female Infanticide - India By journeymanpictures May 1997 In India's southern state of Tamil Nadu, female infanticide is so frequent that all second daughters are known as 'the girl born for the burial pit'. Desperately poor families routinely kill girl babies after birth for fear they can't afford to raise them or provide the extortionate dowry required by a groom's family. Pavati's husband killed her second daughter the day she was born. She went home to her father's house and didn't eat for a month following the death but with two other children she had to return to her tiny hut and carry on. Another baby, Hymera was luckier, brought to a safe house by her uncle despite fierce opposition from his neighbours. Now she is cared for by people who value her life. Teenage girls sit in a circle in a coconut grove discussing the strengths they will need as India's next generation of mothers. A report on the attempts of agencies, such as the Indian Council for Child Welfare, to stop infanticide through re-education, training of women and providing homes for unwanted girl babies. So far prosecuting local mothers for murder has done little more than punish the saddest victims of a social tragedy.
