Nach seinem Tode entstand ein wahrer Kult um ihn, was wiederum auf seine Nähe zu den Bürgern, seinen Einsatz für das Land Österreich und seine politischen Erfolge zurückzuführen ist. Auch seine Kritiker und Gegner haben oftmals Haiders Talent und Rhetorik bewundert. Eines ist gewiss, die Anteilnahme, das Medienecho und auch die hitzigen Diskussionen um seine Person nach seinem Tode, würde ihm wohl große Freude bereiten und ihm das eine oder andere Lächeln entlocken. Jörg Haider starb am 11. Oktober 2008 im Alter von 58 Jahren. Die Trauerfeier fand am 18.10.2008 in Klagenfurt statt.
