En l'absence d'une information officielle, les rumeurs vont bon train. Mais, selon les témoignages de rescapés algériens présents, hier, au Caire et arrivés à Alger depuis ce matin, il s'agit de quatre morts averées dont l'un est tombé sous les yeux de notre interlocuteurs. Aucun chiffre officiel na été déclaré. Les speculations s'affolent face à la difficulté d'obtenir des informations fiables. Seuls, les témoignages dalgériens de retour de cet enfer en font état. Parmi ces blessés, le chanteur de Rap Reda City 16, qui est venu dés son arrivée en Algérie, à la rédaction du journal pour apporter ses témoignages, photos et vidéo à lappui. Selon ce dernier, " des algériens étaient « offerts » à la vindicte des égyptiens. Les policiers chargés de protéger les supporteurs algériens les guidaient à travers les dédales de ruelles cairote, tout droit dans un guet apens ou ils sont attendus par une horde de voyous. Les policiers ne sempêchaient pas de parfaire leur forfait en criant « voici des algériens » et de prendre ensuite la fuite laissant nos compatriotes désarmés, perdus et livrés à un caillassage en règle". Cette « opération » digne dune période nazie aurait "coûté la vie à quatre algériens", dont lun est mort sous les yeux du rappeur qui déclare "avoir fait la chahada à la victime avant de la couvrir de lemblème national". Notre interlocuteur rapporte qu' "Une femme enceinte accompagnant son mari, na du son salut" quà la bravoure de notre témoin qui affirme sêtre " jeté sur elle la plaquant par terre pour éviter les cailloux, son mari avait perdu connaissance, atteint par les projectiles". "Une fois conduite à lhôpital, cette dame aurait perdu son fœtus" ajouta-t-il. Un autre témoin, Riad Mouzai, un commerçant de 44 ans, raconte sa mésaventure égyptienne. Fait honteux, il se serait fait "volé sa camera vidéo en plein mosquée dAl Azhar" alors quil faisait sa prière la veille du match. Il relate, très ému, les conditions dans lesquelles il sest retrouvé lui et dautres algériens. Après le match, leur « fuite » vers laéroport est rocambolesque. « Heureusement, nous avons eu la présence desprit de partir très tôt le matin » raconte-t-il « nous avons pris le premier vol. A laéroport, les gens avaient plein sur le cœur. » Continue-t-il. Pour ce fervent supporteur qui a suivi léquipe nationale algérienne en Tunisie, en France et partout ou jouent les « Verts » sestime « très chanceux ». Il avoue devoir sa chance au chauffeur qui les transportait lui et ses camarades à bord dun mini bus vulgarisé et empruntant des détours après avoir semé leur « cordon sécuritaire » qui se constitue dune voiture de police. Riad raconte que « dans le stade et au sein même de la galerie algérienne sest glissé des « infiltrés » égyptiens portant des tenues algériennes et feignant soutenir lAlgérie ». Que s'est-il donc passé reellement au Caire ? Si mort il y a comment est ce possible dans une rencontre de football entre pays censés etre soudés par les liens de la fraternité, histoire, la religion et la langue ? Qui serait derriere ces rumeurs si, il s'averait qu'il ne s'agirait là que d'intox ? Uzbekistan is now regarded as a key ally in the War on Terror. It allows the US to use its airbases to support operations in Afghanistan and American agents are believed to have 'rendered' terrorist suspects to Uzbekistan to be tortured. However, there are growing fears that siding with this repressive regime to fight terrorism is counter productive. Supporters of anti-Iraq war groups from the US, Britain and Iraq hold a rally against the Iraq war at the Unitarian Chapel, Cross Street, Manchester city centre. The public meeting is entitled: "End the occupation of Iraq - Bring all the troops home". The line up of speakers is as follows: Michael Hoffman: Michael took part in the invasion of Iraq in 2003 and on his return to Pennsylvania became involved in the anti-war movement. He is co-founder and national coordinator of Iraq Veterans Against the War. Lou Plummer: Lou served in the US army in the 80s and is the grandson, son, brother and father of men who have served or are serving the military. He is a leading spokesman for Military Families Speak Out and Bring Them Home Now. Rae Street: Rae is a well known peace activist based in the North West of England. She has travelled the world as part of her campaigning. She is vice-chair of national Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. Dr Salam Ismael: Salam is general secretary of the Doctors for Iraq Society. He was in Iraq from the start of the war to June of this year. He worked in Fallujah during the first seige in April 2004. John Rees: John is one of the co-founder members of the Stop the War Coalition. He has spoken at meetings across the country and in the Middle East The meeting is chaired by Ron Senchak. Ron was in the US navy from 1965-68. He joined the movement against the Vietnam war when he left the navy. The rally launches the Greater Manchester campaign for the 19th March national demonstration in London, which is part of a global day of action. This day marks the second anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. Demonstrations will be taking place in other countries around the world on the same day. Dr Ismael speaks movingly about the slaughter of two of his own doctor colleagues during the recent attack on Fallujah and reports that over 3000 Iraqis have been killed during the attack. He uses a Powerpoint presentation during his speech showing photos of atrocities committed during the attack on Fallujah. The two US speakers speak of their brave and tireless work in the US opposing the war. Rae Street exposes the hypocrisy of British warmongers--drawing attention to the fact that Britain has its own weapons of mass destruction. Ron Sanchek, a Vietnam war veteran resident in Manchester, chairs the meeting and speaks about the pressing need to build for the London demonstration against the war on 19th March 2005. John Rees talks about how the anti-war movement has succeeded in keeping the war issue at the top of the agenda in the run up to the coming election. Notre interlocuteur rapporte qu' "Une femme enceinte accompagnant son mari, na du son salut" quà la bravoure de notre témoin qui affirme sêtre " jeté sur elle la plaquant par terre pour éviter les cailloux, son mari avait perdu connaissance, atteint par les projectiles". "Une fois conduite à lhôpital, cette dame aurait perdu son fœtus" ajouta-t-il. Un autre témoin, Riad Mouzai, un commerçant de 44 ans, raconte sa mésaventure égyptienne. Fait honteux, il se serait fait "volé sa camera vidéo en plein mosquée dAl Azhar" alors quil faisait sa prière la veille du match. Il relate, très ému, les conditions dans lesquelles il sest retrouvé lui et dautres algériens. Après le match, leur « fuite » vers laéroport est rocambolesque. « Heureusement, nous avons eu la présence desprit de partir très tôt le matin » raconte-t-il « nous avons pris le premier vol. Just how valuable an ally is Uzbekistan in the War on Terror? Critics of the government risk being tortured to death, there's no freedom of speech and all opposition parties are banned. "This is not a government. It's a monster against its own people," laments Prof Mirsaidov. In the name of fighting Islamic terror, Uzbekistan has jailed thousands of members of Hiz-but-Tahrir. The problem is, many claim they are innocent and confessions are extracted under torture. But despite its appalling human rights record, few Western governments seem willing to criticise it. Uzbekistan is now regarded as a key ally in the War on Terror. It allows the US to use its airbases to support operations in Afghanistan and American agents are believed to have 'rendered' terrorist suspects to Uzbekistan to be tortured. However, there are growing fears that siding with this repressive regime to fight terrorism is counter productive. As former British Ambassador Craig Murray states: "Our short sighted policy in Asia is creating the terrorism we claim we are fighting." Supporters of anti-Iraq war groups from the US, Britain and Iraq hold a rally against the Iraq war at the Unitarian Chapel, Cross Street, Manchester city centre. The public meeting is entitled: "End the occupation of Iraq - Bring all the troops home". The line up of speakers is as follows: Michael Hoffman: Michael took part in the invasion of Iraq in 2003 and on his return to Pennsylvania became involved in the anti-war movement. He is co-founder and national coordinator of Iraq Veterans Against the War. Lou Plummer: Lou served in the US army in the 80s and is the grandson, son, brother and father of men who have served or are serving the military. He is a leading spokesman for Military Families Speak Out and Bring Them Home Now. Rae Street: Rae is a well known peace activist based in the North West of England. She has travelled the world as part of her campaigning. She is vice-chair of national Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. Dr Salam Ismael: Salam is general secretary of the Doctors for Iraq Society. He was in Iraq from the start of the war to June of this year. He worked in Fallujah during the first seige in April 2004. John Rees: John is one of the co-founder members of the Stop the War Coalition. He has spoken at meetings across the country and in the Middle East The meeting is chaired by Ron Senchak. Ron was in the US navy from 1965-68. He joined the movement against the Vietnam war when he left the navy. The rally launches the Greater Manchester campaign for the 19th March national demonstration in London, which is part of a global day of action. This day marks the second anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. Demonstrations will be taking place in other countries around the world on the same day. Dr Ismael speaks movingly about the slaughter of two of his own doctor colleagues during the recent attack on Fallujah and reports that over 3000 Iraqis have been killed during the attack. He uses a Powerpoint presentation during his speech showing photos of atrocities committed during the attack on Fallujah. The two US speakers speak of their brave and tireless work in the US opposing the war. Rae Street exposes the hypocrisy of British warmongers--drawing attention to the fact that Britain has its own weapons of mass destruction. Ron Sanchek, a Vietnam war veteran resident in Manchester, chairs the meeting and speaks about the pressing need to build for the London demonstration against the war on 19th March 2005. John Rees talks about how the anti-war movement has succeeded in keeping the war issue at the top of the agenda in the run up to the coming election. After all that has happened in Iraq over the past year and half, the sight of people from countries that are on opposites sides of an ongoing war sharing the same platform is remarkable and inspiring.
