The one-hour bloodless battle, known as the Tomatina, left the town awash in a sea of tomato pulp. The town council brought in some 100 tonnes of ripe tomatoes on trucks for the estimated 40,000 tourists who descended on the town of just 9,000 inhabitants for the annual festival, which has taken place for more than 60 years. Many of the participants were shirtless while others wore old clothes, hard hats or goggles. Afterwards, workers hosed down the walls and streets to remove the tomato pulp. Spanish media said the tomatoes cost the town council around 28,000 euros (35,000 dollars), about one third of the overall budget of 70,000 euros for the festival, most of which goes to pay for security, cleaning services, mobile toilets and civil protection. More than 100 police and 120 civil protection volunteers were on hand in case of incidents. The "Tomatina" is held each year in Bunol, located in a fertile region some 40 kilometres (25 miles) north of the coastal city of Valencia, Spain's third-largest city, on the last Wednesday in August. The origins of the event are unclear although it is thought to have its roots in a food fight between childhood friends in the mid-1940s in the city. It has grown in size as international press coverage brought more and more people to the festival. La Tomatina in Bunol, Valencia is the largest food fight on the planet. Every year approximately 40,000 tomato enthusiasts turn up for the biggest tomato fight in the world. Five bulbous, tomato-packed rockets are sent whistling into the sky to start the festival of La Tomatina. The masses congregated below then launch into a one hour frenzy of tomato throwing - it's everyone for themselves. Según cifras municipales, esta fiesta popular, que atrae a numerosos extranjeros, movilizó a 120 voluntarios de protección civil para la seguridad y 17 trenes especiales para traer a los curiosos turistas desde Madrid. Las cien toneladas de tomates, bien maduros, fueron arrojados por los asistentes en una hora, entre las 11h00 y 12h00 como requiere la tradición. La fiesta se remonta a los años 40, cuando jóvenes frustrados por no participar en las fiestas del pueblo comenzaron a arrojar tomates. Desde entonces, la tradición se perpetuó y dio a esta pequeña ciudad de 10.000 habitantes una relativa y particular celebridad en España y el exterior. La municipalidad cobra ahora muy caros los derechos de retransmisión televisiva, sobre todo en el extranjero, para poder filmar la batalla desde uno de los balcones del ayuntamiento. Dig a trench through the center of both halves with your fingers. Step 2: Pile on meats and cheeses Fill the trenches with your choice of fresh meats and cheeses to form a protective moisture barrier to the bread. Step 3: Add cucumber and tomato Add the cucumber and tomato slices to balance the salty bite of the meat and cheese. Tip: Pack your ingredients separately and construct your sandwich on site if you take your lunch to work or school. This preserves freshness and protects against soggy bread. Step 4: Drizzle mayo or dressing Drizzle on the mayo or dressing of your choice. Be gentle -- you don't want to turn your sandwich into an oily mess. Tip: Flavor the mayo with fresh herbs, such as basil or oregano, or use salsa or guacamole for a change of pace. Step 5: Top with lettuce or sprouts Top your sandwich with romaine lettuce and sprouts for a refreshing crunch. Step 6: Add bacon and olive Add crumbled bacon for extra flavor. Spear the olive with the toothpick and stick it through your sandwich to hold it together.
