Al-Mabhouh was assassinated in the Al Bustan Rotana Hotel in Dubai on January 19, 2010, having arrived in the country earlier that day from Syria. It is suspected by Dubai police that he was murdered in his hotel room, with accounts of the cause of death ranging from suffocation to electrocution. A controversy over the murder has arisen over evidence indicating that his death was possibly an Israeli government-sanctioned assassination.[3] The Sunday Times reports that al-Mabhouh was tracked since January 19, 2010, on his 10:05 a.m. departure from Damascus, Syria to Dubai on Emirates Flight 912.[10] While it states that he traveled under a false passport,[10] Hamas and Dubai officials maintain that al-Mabhouh entered the country under his own identity[11] at 3:15 p.m.[2] Normally al-Mabhouh would have been protected by bodyguards, but their arrival was delayed because the plane was full.[12] Al-Mabhouh took a taxi to the Al Bustan Rotana hotel and settled into room 230.[13] He had asked for a room with no balcony and sealed windows, so no one could enter other than through the door. He showered, changed, left documents in the safe, and then exited the hotel between 4:30 and 5 p.m, roughly an hour having passed since first checking in.[8] What he did during the next three to four hours is unclear, with one report saying he went to Dubai's Iranian consulate for a meeting,[14] and another stating he met with "people from his own group".[15] At approximately 8:25 p.m. Al-Mabhouh came back to the room,[13] and subsequently failed to answer a call from his wife a half hour later.[8] According to Dubai police, he was dead by 9 p.m. that evening.[2] On January 20, the following day, his body was found in his hotel room.[16][10] After al-Mabhouh's death, his remains were subsequently moved to Damascus for burial. Several causes of death have been put forth by various parties. Police have said that results from their preliminary forensic report found that he was first paralyzed via electric shock and then suffocated, though their investigation and final report on the matter will not be ready for a month.[2] The Khaleej Times quoted an unnamed senior police official as saying that four masked assailants had shocked al-Mabhouh's legs before using a pillow to suffocate him.[17] Another story reported by Uzi Mahnaimi stated that a hit team killed al-Mabhouh with a heart-attack inducing drug, then proceeded to take photographs of his documents before leaving.[10] A medical team also stated that they found signs of strangulation. Blood samples were sent to a French laboratory that confirmed he died from electrocution. On June 8, 1967, the unarmed spy ship USS Liberty was on duty in international waters off the Sinai Peninsula when it was bombarded by Israeli fighter jets and torpedo boats. The two-hour-long attacks killed at least 34 sailors, wounded 173 others and nearly sunk the ship. The attack on the Liberty came at a time when Israel had engaged in a brief but intense war with Egypt and its Arab allies, which coincided with the US war on Vietnam. Although the ship was clearly marked as an American vessel, Israelis declared the attack on Liberty as a simple case of "friendly fire" and "mistaken identity". Despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, former US president Lyndon Johnson accepted the Israeli claim and cancelled all investigations into the incident. "It was a case of mistaken identity I do not care if every man drowned and the ship sank, we will not embarrass an ally," Johnson had told his opponents who demanded an open congressional hearing to address the Israeli claim. USS Liberty survivor Rick Almett, however, begged to differ. "There was a conspiracy between our government and Israel. So that's the reason why they didn't pursue it and why the investigations were covered up because of the alliance of Israel and the United States," Almetti told Press TV. In a separate interview with Press TV, Jim Smith -- another surviving member of the USS Liberty crew -- said the incident was "an intentional act by Israel to sink the ship with all hands and no survivors". While there are many conspiracy theories as to why Israel attacked a ship of its top ally, Earnie Gallo -- who heads the USS Liberty Veterans Associations -- told Press TV that the attack was in fact designed to pave the way for an Israeli military incursion into the Golan Heights. In 2003, an independent committee comprised of retired high-ranking military officers and a former US ambassador to the Middle East joined forces to investigate the Liberty attack and the subsequent cover-up. Their pleas for an investigation, however, have fallen on deaf ears in the Congress as it continues to ignore the facts presented on the Liberty attack. [View \| Download]	Fugitive on 'most wanted' list given to Pak lives in Thane One name in the high-profile '50 most wanted' list of fugitives submitted to Pakistan, Wazhul Kamar Khan, is actually living in Wagle Estate in Thane with his ailing mother, a wife and five children. Khan, whose name appears on the list as Khan Wazhul Kamar, is currently out on bail and claims to be regularly presenting himself in court as per his bail conditions. He is an accused in the 2003 Mulund train blast case. The blast had killed 11 people, including four women and two police constables, and injured 82 people. TOI caught up with Khan at his residence in Thane on Sunday, May 15, at around 4pm. Last year, Khan was arrested and booked in five cases. These were the Mulund, Vile Parle, Ghatkopar-II and Mumbai Central blast cases, which have been clubbed together in the Pota court, and an Arms Act case. He was granted bail in three months in all the cases. When asked about Khan and his name ending up on the list of fugitives, a senior police officer said, "He was arrested in the blast cases last year and is currently out on bail." Khan claimed he has never gone to Pakistan. He hid in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh for about a year from 2003 to 2004, he said. He later started a zari business in Dharavi, the country's biggest slum in Mumbai. An Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) team finally arrested him on May 10, 2010 in Kurla and booked him under the Arms Act for carrying a firearm. Apart from the Mulund blast, police had said that Khan was also involved in the Parle, Mumbai Central and Ghatkopar blasts of 2002 and 2003. Over 120 were injured and 16 killed in the four terror attacks. After getting bail, Khan was released from Arthur Road jail on August 18, 2010. "Since my release, I have been focusing on establishing my zari business. I was hiding for years in Dharavi and continued my zari business from there," Khan told TOI. He said, "After the blasts I came to know through television news that the police had described me as one of the wanted. Scared, I fled to my relatives' place in UP and returned to Mumbai a year later." He added, "I am very much here and attend the court hearings regularly. So how can you say that I am hiding in Pakistan?" Khan, who is now 44, said he was born in Kurla and studied there. In 1998, he shifted to Wagle Estate. He is the 17th accused to be arrested in the Mulund train blast case. The most-wanted list was originally shared with Pakistan during the home secretary-level talks between the two countries on March 28 and 29, 2011. Nineteen names on the list are members of the Dawood Ibrahim gang. Khan told TOI that he had once visited Padga, Maharashtra, where people were being trained in operating firearms. "I had visited that place near Bhiwandi. Because of that the police booked me under the Prevention of Terrorism Act and I had to live a fugitive's life for almost seven years," said Khan, a Class X dropout. Khan lives in a 10-by-10 sq ft room with his family. "I did have a passport, but it was misplaced during the tamasha (period he was absconding)," added Khan. His two daughters have studied in English-medium schools and are now preparing for higher studies. "I want my children to focus on studies and am doing everything possible for their future," added Khan. "My father passed away while I was absconding, but I managed to attend his funeral. I don't want this to affect my business and I'm trying to get discharged from these cases," he said. Al-Mabhouh was assassinated in the Al Bustan Rotana Hotel in Dubai on January 19, 2010, having arrived in the country earlier that day from Syria. It is suspected by Dubai police that he was murdered in his hotel room, with accounts of the cause of death ranging from suffocation to electrocution. A controversy over the murder has arisen over evidence indicating that his death was possibly an Israeli government-sanctioned assassination.[3] The Sunday Times reports that al-Mabhouh was tracked since January 19, 2010, on his 10:05 a.m. departure from Damascus, Syria to Dubai on Emirates Flight 912.[10] While it states that he traveled under a false passport,[10] Hamas and Dubai officials maintain that al-Mabhouh entered the country under his own identity[11] at 3:15 p.m.[2] Normally al-Mabhouh would have been protected by bodyguards, but their arrival was delayed because the plane was full.[12] Al-Mabhouh took a taxi to the Al Bustan Rotana hotel and settled into room 230.[13] He had asked for a room with no balcony and sealed windows, so no one could enter other than through the door. He showered, changed, left documents in the safe, and then exited the hotel between 4:30 and 5 p.m, roughly an hour having passed since first checking in.[8] What he did during the next three to four hours is unclear, with one report saying he went to Dubai's Iranian consulate for a meeting,[14] and another stating he met with "people from his own group".[15] At approximately 8:25 p.m. Al-Mabhouh came back to the room,[13] and subsequently failed to answer a call from his wife a half hour later.[8] According to Dubai police, he was dead by 9 p.m. that evening.[2] On January 20, the following day, his body was found in his hotel room.[16][10] After al-Mabhouh's death, his remains were subsequently moved to Damascus for burial. Several causes of death have been put forth by various parties. Police have said that results from their preliminary forensic report found that he was first paralyzed via electric shock and then suffocated, though their investigation and final report on the matter will not be ready for a month.[2] The Khaleej Times quoted an unnamed senior police official as saying that four masked assailants had shocked al-Mabhouh's legs before using a pillow to suffocate him.[17] Another story reported by Uzi Mahnaimi stated that a hit team killed al-Mabhouh with a heart-attack inducing drug, then proceeded to take photographs of his documents before leaving.[10] A medical team also stated that they found signs of strangulation. Blood samples were sent to a French laboratory that confirmed he died from electrocution. On June 8, 1967, the unarmed spy ship USS Liberty was on duty in international waters off the Sinai Peninsula when it was bombarded by Israeli fighter jets and torpedo boats. The two-hour-long attacks killed at least 34 sailors, wounded 173 others and nearly sunk the ship. The attack on the Liberty came at a time when Israel had engaged in a brief but intense war with Egypt and its Arab allies, which coincided with the US war on Vietnam. Although the ship was clearly marked as an American vessel, Israelis declared the attack on Liberty as a simple case of "friendly fire" and "mistaken identity". Despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, former US president Lyndon Johnson accepted the Israeli claim and cancelled all investigations into the incident. "It was a case of mistaken identity I do not care if every man drowned and the ship sank, we will not embarrass an ally," Johnson had told his opponents who demanded an open congressional hearing to address the Israeli claim. USS Liberty survivor Rick Almett, however, begged to differ. "There was a conspiracy between our government and Israel. So that's the reason why they didn't pursue it and why the investigations were covered up because of the alliance of Israel and the United States," Almetti told Press TV. In a separate interview with Press TV, Jim Smith -- another surviving member of the USS Liberty crew -- said the incident was "an intentional act by Israel to sink the ship with all hands and no survivors". While there are many conspiracy theories as to why Israel attacked a ship of its top ally, Earnie Gallo -- who heads the USS Liberty Veterans Associations -- told Press TV that the attack was in fact designed to pave the way for an Israeli military incursion into the Golan Heights. In 2003, an independent committee comprised of retired high-ranking military officers and a former US ambassador to the Middle East joined forces to investigate the Liberty attack and the subsequent cover-up. [View \| Download]	Fugitive on 'most wanted' list given to Pak lives in Thane One name in the high-profile '50 most wanted' list of fugitives submitted to Pakistan, Wazhul Kamar Khan, is actually living in Wagle Estate in Thane with his ailing mother, a wife and five children. Khan, whose name appears on the list as Khan Wazhul Kamar, is currently out on bail and claims to be regularly presenting himself in court as per his bail conditions. He is an accused in the 2003 Mulund train blast case. The blast had killed 11 people, including four women and two police constables, and injured 82 people. TOI caught up with Khan at his residence in Thane on Sunday, May 15, at around 4pm. Last year, Khan was arrested and booked in five cases. These were the Mulund, Vile Parle, Ghatkopar-II and Mumbai Central blast cases, which have been clubbed together in the Pota court, and an Arms Act case. He was granted bail in three months in all the cases. When asked about Khan and his name ending up on the list of fugitives, a senior police officer said, "He was arrested in the blast cases last year and is currently out on bail." Khan claimed he has never gone to Pakistan. He hid in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh for about a year from 2003 to 2004, he said. He later started a zari business in Dharavi, the country's biggest slum in Mumbai. An Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) team finally arrested him on May 10, 2010 in Kurla and booked him under the Arms Act for carrying a firearm. Apart from the Mulund blast, police had said that Khan was also involved in the Parle, Mumbai Central and Ghatkopar blasts of 2002 and 2003. Over 120 were injured and 16 killed in the four terror attacks. After getting bail, Khan was released from Arthur Road jail on August 18, 2010. "Since my release, I have been focusing on establishing my zari business. I was hiding for years in Dharavi and continued my zari business from there," Khan told TOI. He said, "After the blasts I came to know through television news that the police had described me as one of the wanted. Scared, I fled to my relatives' place in UP and returned to Mumbai a year later." He added, "I am very much here and attend the court hearings regularly. So how can you say that I am hiding in Pakistan?" Khan, who is now 44, said he was born in Kurla and studied there. In 1998, he shifted to Wagle Estate. He is the 17th accused to be arrested in the Mulund train blast case. The most-wanted list was originally shared with Pakistan during the home secretary-level talks between the two countries on March 28 and 29, 2011. Nineteen names on the list are members of the Dawood Ibrahim gang. Khan told TOI that he had once visited Padga, Maharashtra, where people were being trained in operating firearms. "I had visited that place near Bhiwandi. Because of that the police booked me under the Prevention of Terrorism Act and I had to live a fugitive's life for almost seven years," said Khan, a Class X dropout. Khan lives in a 10-by-10 sq ft room with his family. "I did have a passport, but it was misplaced during the tamasha (period he was absconding)," added Khan. His two daughters have studied in English-medium schools and are now preparing for higher studies. "I want my children to focus on studies and am doing everything possible for their future," added Khan. "My father passed away while I was absconding, but I managed to attend his funeral. I don't want this to affect my business and I'm trying to get discharged from these cases," he said.
