Elvis Presley Live - '68 Comeback Special - Love Me Tender
By fastdancer88

Elvis Presley Live - '68 Comeback Special - Love Me Tender

Elvis, starring Elvis Presley, was the title of a 1968 United States television special. Sponsored by The Singer Sewing Machine Company, it aired on December 3, 1968 on the NBC television network. The special is commonly referred to as the '68 Comeback Special, because of subsequent developments in Presley's career, but the soundtrack album was released simply as NBC-TV Special. It was directed by Steve Binder and produced by Binder and Bones Howe.

Presley's informal jamming in front of a small audience in the '68 Comeback Special is regarded as a forerunner of the so-called 'Unplugged' concept, later popularized by MTV

"Love Me Tender" is a song sung by Elvis Presley, adapted from the tune of "Aura Lee" (or "Aura Lea"), a sentimental Civil War ballad with music by George R. Poulton and words by W.W. Fosdick. "Aura Lee" was published in 1861 and this Civil War song later became popular with college glee clubs and barbershop quartets. It was also sung at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York.

Presley performed "Love Me Tender" on the The Ed Sullivan Show 9 September 1956, shortly before the single's release and about a month before the movie, Love Me Tender, was released, for which the song was originally recorded. (This was Presley's only movie that he died in.) On the following day, RCA received 1 million advance orders for the song, making it a gold record before it was even released. The studio, 20th Century Fox, originally wanted to call the movie "The Reno Brothers" but instead re-titled it to "Love Me Tender" to capitalize on the song's popularity.

Sheila 74 - Mélancolie - Tv live upon studio track
By lOmnivoreSobriquet

Best woman-in-love song ever.

Thrilling, moving.. and shaking.
A beauty on screen, and an essential voice, large, soft, and powerful. Words concerning you...
What else ?

Great moving (dancing), acting of the song. Expressions on her face too... The accomplished TV performer I would say... at the golden era of it.

Sheila !

Most impeccable lyrics, central, penned with taste on a major theme.

( from http://www.sheila-unehistoiredamour.c... )

This song struck as 'modern' at the time, and by its quality deeply impressed people listening to it, that is, about everybody... (thanks to radios, + some TV shows etc.)
It is quite comparable with Claude François' 1967 breakthrough from his surprising "Comme d'habitude" serious and 'dramatic' singing, the famous song "My Way" later covered by F.Sinatra and so many others. Here too, Sheila surprised everybody with this "Mélancolie", a low and grave voice, thin lyrics and a rather adult's 'love suffering' theme, and it fit the public's taste amazingly.
It was first issued as a B side of "Coeur blessé", but by general demand as soon as aired - assaults on telephone to radios, repeated -, was re-issued as a A side, to then, fill the air and mood of the time so distinctly for those who lived through it (in France, + Francophonie?), and to remain an audience's favorite ever since.

"Oh que je t'aime"...
"L'amour ! L'amour c'est toi !"...
When such lyrics meet such a subject, plus melody and a singer, one simply has to... let it be.

(more phrases about it in the other (man-eating) video presentation, of the same song but another Tv performance (ballet, splendid, lip-sing i.e. pure record, if of lower quality a copy), that I've put for you all-willing SHEILA ! shouting citoyens : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxaWIn... )

It is also possible to watch another extract of the same TV show this time, with her performing "Le couple", one of her very best song too, in what was without doubt her golden era.. Even though her career close to 50 yrs long has appeal thoroughtly. She is crackingly beautiful, 29, and the song is great. Singing fully live there this time with house orchestra playing. :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPMUKA...
(beware a 'speed incident' occurs during the first verse and lasts only 15 sec. This is a must-see however.)

The present one has her 'lengthening' some verses, stretching them beginning and end, at times, in order to cover the vocals from the backing track (which is sometimes great ( see "Adam et Eve"...)), and perhaps to show that indeed she's singing it live (so many controversies on her...), it being very slightly ponderous, at times, for the song.

This is all wildly beautiful, to the limits really... ultra feminine, all-womanly... In words, and vocals, and even plastics...
A super song and a super singer, bringing out the very best.

(This tv-cut is either end1973, or early74 I do not know...)
The song is an adaptation (with complete change of sense) of "Melody Lady" from one "Sunshine Papoose"...

Pity one cannot hear the applause (solid!) at the end !

Sheila 73 - Mélancolie - Tv
By lOmnivoreSobriquet

A superb Tv setting of true 70's design, for this ultimate woman-in-love song. Perhaps her best one... And a spotless rendering again, from loveable SHEILA.

'Long dress' period, Azzaro tailored (+ "the can opener" i.e. neck-rounder she always wore by then, worded as our "ener1111" or "René" best-fan puts it...)
Like with Picasso there are 'periods' in Sheila's output... e.g. "Pigtails", "Scottish skirt", "Mini jeans shorts", "Superstar of the 70's in moulding sequin" or "Blue spangle combi", then "Long dress" Azzaro shopping in Champs-Elysées, then "Disco queen in super tight sequib shorts", "Aerobic in Central-Park'..., "Leathered Reaganite pre-Madonnesque NY-LA & Concorde darl", etc... always a moving beauty, and a driving voice...
With a steady stream of timeless hits then and now : to sing and dance and kiss with.

Here is the "Azzaro" then, slowly overtaking the much appreciated monolithic "combinaison bleue" (blue moulding sequin), as the "74" video of that same "Mélancolie" song to be found here on my page so amply proves... Both were her 'most classic' ones, as you'll agree

Let's enjoy the record, the song, and the singer.
Her voice, large and plain is shining out and she's the queen.

We see Sheila in an exercise she excelled before all : the five-star production and efficient and impressive "playback" (i.e. 'lip-sync'), always a pretext for a fine ballet + a 'total show' (settings, dresses, special moves, or 'gimmick' gestures for each songs, etc.)
(sorry, the capture here is not prime...)

'Modern' beat sliced into sound, so Sheila remained a ballroom success, some romantism here, all of it delightfully over-produced, insisting in the early 70's fashion.
Those simple & efficient verses in tune, hammered as deemed necessary, yet so driving AND romantic here again... upon very careful instrumentations whatever the means, and those multitracked sounds shamelessly piled-up for popular 'announcements' she bore so well (the guy Estardy at the recording studio was a crack for radio adverts and jingles too...),
... carried by such an *essential* voice : brought along all chanting moods.

"L'amour ! L'amour c'est toi !"

Put it loud ! , and get those beating drums really banging !

This is 73 man !
Where's your stereo set ? Don't you have bass ? Cabinets ? Get some watts !

The song was adapted from one "Melody Lady", but here as with "Les rois mages" the text and meaning of the song was completely changed and rewritten, to become a pure ode from the loving woman to the man, that has to remain a classic of the genre.
It was written by... a young female journalist that had come to interview Sheila in the office of her 'boss' Claude Carrère of "Les disques Carrère" (who made a fortune in musical edition (and then diffusion) all upon Sheila !). The man noticed that the two women got on well, and tried to put her in confidence, so as a record of "Melody Lady" was being played in meantime for 'possible future song', he simply bet on her that she could try and write the text for Sheila... provided he would be credited as "co-writer", as he always did...She took up the challenge...
Hence these "oh que je t'aime" (oh I love you so) replacing the original "Meèè-lo-dy-la-dy", with the song then declining the theme all along.

And so, let's have your first lesson of French !!
True 'first-class' indeed, with the unforgettable & multi-timbral :
"Ooooooooh que je t'aimeeeeeu"
(Ooooooooh I love you sooooooo)
"Tout," (Everything...)
" Me fait mal quand tu t'en vas.."
(...hurts when you're leaving...)

Mélancolie, my favourite song, together with "Adam et Eve"... "Les rois mages"... (check them !)

Watch another splendid Tv rendering of HER singing this ultimate song, in color and actual singing (upon sound track, wearing her cultissime blue spangle combi), pick "Sheila 74 - Mélancolie" in my personal page or : http://www.sheila-unehistoiredamour.c... An excellent version of this 'myth-building' song...

If you want to acknowledge of how a woman in love sounds like, SHE being French or Earthian simply, do look any further.
Just turn on to those "Oh que je t'aime" from SHEILA !
This is it.
This is what shoud be chosen as a presentation of the phenomenom, welcoming visiting ETs...

Aren't we lucky French boys ?
