With a succesfull career spanning five decades, Googoosh has sold millions of albums, has played sold out arenas around the world and is a household name. In the 1970s, Googoosh was considered the most celebrated recording artist in Iran.[1] In addition to music, Googoosh was also an actress in many Persian films of the 1960s and 1970s. She is more widely known as a singer than as an actress. After the Iranian Revolution in 1979 she remained in Iran until 2000 but did not record or perform again due to the ban on solo female singers. Still, her following grew. Younger people have rediscovered her music via bootleg recordings of her music.[2] Outside of Iran, she has a significant following in many Middle Eastern and Central Asian countries,[3] and currently resides in Los Angeles, California[4] and continues her career, albeit in a limited manner.Googoosh was born 'Faegheh Atashin' on 5 May 1950[5] on Sarcheshmeh Street, in an old, worn-down part of Tehran. While Googoosh was still an infant, her father divorced her mother.[6] She began doing impersonations of some of the singers of the time[7]. When her father discovered this talent, he put her on stage[7].In 2000, a feature-length documentary called Googoosh: Iran's Daughter was released which chronicled the singer's life and her icon-status while detailing the socio-political turmoil that led to the 1979 Revolution in Iran. Made by Iranian-American filmmaker Farhad Zamani, the documentary began production in 1998 and was made at a time when Googoosh was still forbidden to perform or grant interviews.[citation needed] The tagline of the movie is Her silence made her the voice of a nation.1971: first prize and golden record for her French songs , Retour de la vie and J'entends crier Je t'aime, at Midem festival in the Cannes. In 1982, she attended the "Beit Zvi" school of acting. Her first exposure to the general public in Israel was at the 1986 Pre-Eurovision Song Contest (known as the Kdam-Eurovision), which decided who would represent Israel in the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest. Rita did not win, but her song, along with her provocative performance garnered much interest. That same year, Rita starred in an adaptation of My Fair Lady and released her self-titled debut album, Rita, which went triple platinum, selling over 120,000 copies. In 1988, Rita released her second album, Yemei Ha'Tom (Days of Innocence), which was produced by her husband Rami Kleinstein, which included a song by the noted Israeli playwright Hanoch Levin. In 1990, Rita finally got her chance to represent Israel in the Eurovision Song Contest with her song Shara Barkhovot (Singing in the Streets), but only got to the 18th place. After a brief hiatus, Rita returned in 1994 with her third album, Ahava Gedola (Big Love), which was also successful and led to a three-year tour around the country. Tahanot Bazman (Stations in Time) was released in 1996, consisting mainly of previously unreleased materials. In 1998, Rita was invited to sing the Israeli national Anthem Hatikvah (The Hope) as part of Israel's jubilee celebration Paamonei ha'yovel (The Jubilee Bells). There was a minor uproar concerning the amount of money she would be paid, which seemed exorbitant to some, but she was finally convinced to perform, following a call from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. She reportedly gave the money she earned to charity. In 1999, Rita released Tiftah Halon (Open a Window) which was also a great success, followed by Hamtzam (oxygen) in 2003 which was less successful. In 2004, Rita played the role of Roxie Hart in an adaptation of Chicago for the Beit Leisin Theater.[1] In 2006, Rita put on a new show called One (in English) which ran for a month at the Israel Trade Fairs & Convention Center. Directed by Hanoch Rozen, it was a lavish affair including lasers, flamethrowers, 3-D images, smoke machines and forty dancers, acrobats, and actors. Over 100,000 tickets were sold. After five years in which she didn't release any new albums, Rita released her 7th album, "Remzaim" (Clues). Israel has two nuclear research centres - at Dimona and Soreq. The latest estimates suggest that Israel has produced at least 118 warheads with weapons grade plutonium. The Jericho ballistic missiles are capable of carrying such weapons. The Jericho One, which is now obsolete, had a range of 500 kilometres, and could carry a 20 kiloton nuclear warhead - 20 times more powerful than the US bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. The Jericho Two has a range of 1500 kilometres. It could just reach Iran - and is believed to be able to carry a one megaton nuclear bomb, which is 1,000 times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb. It is believed a Jericho Three missile is now being developed - that will be able to travel around 5,000 kilometres, bringing all of Iran and Europe into its range.
