Destiny's Child I've often heard the people of Gaza called "terrorists". It is the remit of the ignorant and lazy. This short film was made the day after the leader of the Islamic militant group, Hamas, was assassinated in Gaza in April of 2004. The idea was to murder a murderer, to exterminate a terrorist. What it did was create a whole new generation of 'terrorists'. Abdul Aziz al-Rantisi was known to me for nearly two years while I worked in Israel and the Occupied Territories. He was a paediatrician and a skilled leader, passionate about the plight of the people he lived with in one of the most over-populated strips of land in the world. >>No Chance<< The day after Rantissi was killed by an Apache helicopter I went to Gaza to report the events on the ground. The film you see was taken not from my cameraman's rushes but from my own mini-DV. It focuses on a six-year-old boy I met at Rantissi's graveside. He was carrying the flag of Hamas, and was chanting a song about his devotion to Rantissi and his willingness to become a shahid or martyr. He didn't look like a terrorist to me but he was growing up in a land under occupation. There are a lot of little terrorists in the Occupied Territories. Destiny's Child flies in the face of all who would automatically dub Palestinians 'terrorists'. It is my fervant belief that the children of Palestine are politicised almost as soon as they are old enough to speak. How could they not be? The constant presence of the Israeli military, coupled with the unrelenting cycle of despair is a breeding ground for young aspirants who see martyrdom as a glorious ascension. For every Palestinian killed there seem to be hundreds more willing to take their place. This boy is but a single reminder of the reality of life for children growing up in an occupation where martyrdom is a natural way-of-life and, ultimately, death. Hamas and other groups make it their business to ensure these children grow up with a romantic vision of what it is to lay down your life for your people and your country. Israel's occupation ensures Hamas stays in business. Throughout this film children are shown pelting Israeli tanks with stones while shouting "Allah Akhbar" (God is Great). You will hear gun shots fired at the children by Israeli soldiers who watch them through high powered binoculars. Three children were killed on the sand dunes where I filmed these scenes. All shot in either the head or neck by highly trained Israeli snipers in armoured personnel vehicles, simply for throwing stones. The Israeli army says the children are a "danger to personnel operating in the region". Afraid to sleep - Dido Final version Things I did : - I walk to the beat in the beginning, the moment my foot hits the stairs the music really starts. - With the introduction of the instruments I introduce the problem of tossing and turning. - That picture in the frame when I pour the wine is a picture that kills me, it was my favorite picture of Von and I. - We really did sleep in that room together. - I really have woke up and looked at the body pillow like that, some dreams feel more real than others. - Although in some shots you see another camera it was just on the endtable, I only used one as the other sucks. - Blades of grass are in a shot but they are to show that lif egoes on around her even though she feels dead inside. - I fall down the stairs,(k not litterally) I don't just walk, I fall fast. - Introduced to extreme dark with "There" "I dreamnt last night and you were there" - This one is obvious "You kissed my face" my hand goes to my face, obviously remembering kisses that are now replaced with teardrops. - Introduce tossing and turning, it is plenty because it is the main issue, walking is not an issue it is a temporary fix to sleepless nights. Tossing and turning is suffering and this song is about suffering. - "dream of you" causes me to throw myself over not just roll over, it's frusterating when all you can do is think of a person who doesn't love you. - "Pillow where I weep" - obvious - "in the darkness" dragging my hands down my face and closing my eyes. - Decides on suicide vs reality and dreamland to the beat of the music I arise. - There is a flash between getting the paper and writing the letter, this is not an accident this is unpurpose, it is to mean a few things. The moment her spirit dies, and the speed at which she makes this decision. - The clip of looking back is my favorite clip but a hidden story behind it is the fact that I am actually looking in the direction that Von and I used to live. - I like to close all my poems, etc with the scene I opened so we return to where I once climbed the stairs and this time I tumble to the bottom. Symbolism is in the fact that at one point I had climbed to the top and now I willingly tumble down to rock bottom. - I appologize to advil, they do not promote suicide. - Flashing point with the wine is also not an accident, dido's song goes very fast from music to no music and I wanted to grab that with the video. - Ends on "sleep" with a still frame of her dead. shoots to suicide note and that is pretty much the end. Obviously I bolded "Please understand, I'm sorry, It just hurts, I'm afraid to sleep and I'll always love you. But if you care to read the whole note and don't wish to pause it is like this: Please understand, I just can't do it anymore. I'm sorry every morning hurts more than the last. It just hurts so much. Please forgive me. I keep dreaming of you so much that I can't handle it. I'm afraid to sleep. I'll alwaywas love you.
