IQ2 Debate: "Europe is faling its Muslims" - Petra Stienen and Flemming Rose. (3 of 6) By iqsquared Arguing in favour of the motion, Petra Stienen states that we can no longer act as innocent bystanders whilst Europe treats its Muslims so badly. She describes her Catholic upbringing in the divided Netherlands of the 1970s, and the troubles in Cairo, where she later went to learn Arabic. Stienen feels that Europe treats Islam as a Trojan horse, and says that Europeans do not know what to do with people who don't conform to their Enlightenment values. She believes that we are addicted to our own stereotypes, and have fallen prey to the one-dimensional view that Islam is taking over. Arguing against the motion, Flemming Rose says that Muslims in Europe are not a coherent group, and that he doesn't want to essentialise them. Just like anyone else, Muslims are individuals with rights and obligations. Regretably though, many European Muslims are unable to exercise their rights - one recent survey showed that every third Muslim in Germany believed that their fellow Muslims didn't have the right to leave Islam. This has led to many living in fear because of apostasy, and risking social exclusion, stigmatisation or even worse. He says that the fact there are councils for ex-Muslims, but not for ex-Christians or ex-Buddhists, is revealing. IQ2 Debate: "Europe is faling its Muslims" - Intro, Tariq Ramadan and Douglas Murray. (1 of 6) By iqsquared As the first speaker in favour of the motion Tariq Ramadan states his belief that Europe has failed its Muslims in various different ways. It has allowed a political discourse in which Muslims, like the Turks and Bosnians, are not viewed as European citizens and has neglected to recognise the historical contribution of Muslim philosophers and scientists in forging the continent's identity, or the economic contribution of Muslims since World War II. Arguing against the motion Douglas Murray states that Islam is associated with violence for good reasons; it wasn't Buddhists or Atheists who were responsible for the 9/11 or 7/7 attacks. He says that the Muslim population has grown extraordinarily fast - from barely anything in the mid 20th century to between 15 and 17 million at the start of the 21st - and has been relatively successful. But there had been a failure of leadership among Muslim leaders, many of who were paid generously by European governments. The current leader of the Muslim Council of Britain couldn't even condemm stoning.
