SPB on Ilayaraja - Jhummandi Naadam interview in ETV By sx42007 Balu talks about his buddy Maestro Ilayaraja. A must watch interview by SPB and Raja fans!!! He also performs Prema Entha madhuram song from Abhinandana. Here is the transalation by Malar Vannan who is an ilayaraja fan in ilayaraja yahoo group.Translation in English in SPB's own words. Before I (SPB himself) came to chennai I knew only bharathiraja as a friend and nothing about IR. One fine day, bharathiraja came to me and said that I know three guys from my native, who were helping his brother(who sings songs about communism) in an orchestration. He is dead now and they are struggling and the 3 brothers had come to chennai with a hope. I'll ask them to meet you, If possible can you help them by using them in your orchestra? and I said OK. One fine day, all three brothers (Raasaiah (IR), younger brother Amar Singh (Gangai Amaran) & Elder brother Baskar) met me. After my rehearsal, I came out and asked ilayaraja what do you know to play?. Ilayaraja replied " I know how to play harmonium. I asked him to play some song. IR started playing a music piece with the both hands by leaving the front bar. I was astonished and asked him, do you know western music? for which IR replied "I didn't know anything about music". Then how come you are playing the base notes along with other orchestration that too with just two hands, then Raja replied "Sir,I don't even know how to write notes, I just played it just by the sound !!". SPB continued.. In my orchestra already there was a harmonium player by the name Aniruddha. So, I was wondering how can I take Raja by replacing him who was given me chance to sing when I came to madras? So, I told him that Aniruddha is the senior person and my guru also and it's not possible to replace him and can't give a chance to you. Then Raja said, "Sir, I also play guitar". I asked him, "you said you don't know anything about music and you don't even know western music also, then how come you can play guitar. Ilayaraja replied, "I'll play it, just by hearing". On those days in my orchestra, there was a mandolin player but there was no guitar player. Thus, he joined my orchestra as guitar player. Aniruddha was working in a corporation and one day he said he'll not be able to come to orchestra hereafter due to his work. Due this, Ilayaraja promoted as a harmonium player. Gangai amaran was playing the guitar and Baskar, the triple congo player. They started this way with the Orchestra name called "Pavalar Brothers Orchestra(Pavalar Sagotharargal) " and performed in many places both in Tamil and Telugu. Later Ilayaraja started working as assistant to the music director G.K.Venkatesh. There he learn't both classical and western music and became well famous, which is a different story. SPB performs "Prema Entha Madhuram" from Abhinandana and continues to talk about Ilayaraja.. I was blessed with many beautiful numbers given by Ilayaraja in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada are all like Gems (Manickyam). All are wonderful songs. When Ilayaraja composes, he won't have any accompaniment instruments for rhythm, he composes the song with harmonium alone. Acharya Atreya wrote this song ( Prema Entha Madhuram) and generally he will not write lyrics for tunes. While this song was being tuned Ilayaraja played this tune in harmony for which Atreya frightened for some time and said "oh my God I can not write song for this, how many "thana na na.."s are there in this?". Very difficult!! Then Ilayaraja told Atreya that either he has to write the song, or let him tune that song himself. Finally Atreya could write the song. The bottom like is Ilayaraja is not only capable of giving tunes to already written song, but also he could give tough tunes like this one... I feel very proud to say that Ilayaraja is my friend. Even now he is very special. The way re-recording he does, his music and orchestration is unimaginable. Once in a recording, people played a prelude of a song and all the musicians kept their instruments on the floor and gave a standing ovation and they said that they have never heard this kind of sound. That song is none other than Mani Ratnam's "Sundari Kannal Oru Seithi" from the film "Thalapathy" . He used around 126 musicians. He incorporated various instruments like french horns, horns etc.. it was like a festival, in Bombay. They used to talk like "hey!! today ilayaraja is recording with these many musicians and we need to see that". Sometime back Shanker Jaikishan (a well known music director in Bollywood) did a song " Aa Ab lout chale.." with lot many instruments. After that we are seeing something like that and the sound is entirely different and unique, What a sound!!. Starting from recordists to musicians and each and every one praised him. I can't say it in words how proud I felt. I am proud to say that Ilayaraja is my best friend and he is the wonderful swaram (The tune) I have got in this life.
