[View \| Download]	Panama Canal Crossing 10 Oct 2004 10 October 2004 The Panama Canal is a ship canal which joins the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific ocean. One of the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken, it had an enormous impact on shipping between the two oceans, replacing the long and treacherous route via the Drake Passage and Cape Horn at the southernmost tip of South America. A ship sailing from New York to San Francisco via the canal travels 9,500 km (6,000 mi), well under half the 22,500 km (14,000 mi) route around Cape Horn.[1] Although the concept of a canal near Panama dates back to the early 16th century, the first attempt to construct a canal began in 1880 under French leadership. The canal can accommodate vessels from small private yachts up to large commercial vessels. The maximum size of vessel that can use the canal is known as Panamax; an increasing number of modern ships exceed this limit, and are known as post-Panamax or super-Panamax vessels. A typical passage through the canal by a cargo ship takes approximately 810 hours. In fiscal year 2008, 14,702 vessels passed through the waterway with a total 309.6 million Panama Canal/Universal Measurement System (PC/UMS) tons. While the Pacific Ocean is west of the isthmus and the Atlantic to the east, the journey through the canal from the Pacific to the Atlantic is one from southeast to northwest. This is a result of the isthmus's "curving back on itself" in the region of the canal. Without his fantastic models, this project would not have progressed as far as it did. This will probably be my last video upload for a long, long time. This is a project I started over a year ago, the goal was to remake the last zone from Sonic & Knuckles as a 3D animation. I wanted to add additional story points at the beginning and end to compliment the existing canon of the game. This is evidenced by my little additive prologue where Sonic finds the emeralds in space. I had planned to have a sky-diving sequence where Sonic loses his power at the end, and dives after the falling master emerald with Tails picking both of them up in the nick of time. I would have shown them flying to the floating island, dropping off the emerald and roll the credits with them flying off just as the game did it. The plan was to finish. So why didn't I finish? I got burnt out. Animation is a tough craft. It's especially tough when you're not sure of your own abilities. Slap that on top of having a full time animation job at the time, and it's a nightmare having the will to make time for this. You spend all your day on Autodesk Maya, the last thing you want to do when you come home is load up Maya again. I'm releasing this now because I think things have really changed for me. I've moved away from my animation job, and got a new job working at BioWare, which is fantastic. I don't do animation there which is nice, so there's definitely a gap in that regard that might make me come back and finish. There's always that hope. I want to finish so much, there's so much I want to do for this project. So hopefully one day... Esta é a história de um peixe chamado José. Há mais de seis décadas ele passa a maior parte do tempo na água. Nada quase diariamente cerca de 10 quilômetros por dia, está habituado a saltar de navios de mais de 40 metros de altura e é capaz de façanhas homéricas no mar mesmo com seus 80 anos. Zé Peixe, como é conhecido em Aracaju, é reverenciado por marinheiros dos sete cantos por sua humildade, bravura e profundo conhecimento das coisas do mar. E, como toda lenda, tem suas particularidades. Desde que começou a trabalhar no porto de Aracaju, Zé Peixe nunca mais tomou um bom banho de chuveiro. Também quase não bebe água doce. O que faz de Zé Peixe uma espécie rara é a maneira como trabalha: ele vai buscar o navio a nado, enquanto seus colegas recorrem a um barco de apoio. E, quando tira o navio do porto, em vez de voltar de barco ele salta no mar. Faz assim: enrola a camisa, coloca junto com os documentos e os trocados em um saco plástico e amarra firme no calção; mergulha e volta para casa com braçadas elegantes, ritmadas, sem movimentar as pernas para não atiçar os tubarões. Zé Peixe, ganhou fama internacional, espalhada por navegantes de fora que lá atracaram. Os gringos me chamam de Joe Fish, diz. Certa vez, um capitão russo de um cargueiro chegou a pedir que o detivessem quando estava para se lançar ao mar achou que ele estava se suicidando. Zé é peixe miudinho. Tem apenas 1,60 metro de altura e 53 quilos. Mesmo franzino, já realizou muitas grandezas. A maior proeza foi quando socorreu o navio Mercury, que ardia em chamas em alto-mar, vindo das plataformas da Petrobrás e com funcionários a bordo. Zé pegou carona num rebocador, ligeiro chegou ao navio e conduziu a embarcação até um ponto onde todos pudessem saltar e nadar para terra firme. Por causa de sua condição física exemplar, ele conseguiu salvar inúmeras vidas, conta Brabo, o chefe dos práticos, que há 26 anos convive com Peixinho. Zé nunca saiu da casa onde nasceu, umas das mais antigas de Aracaju. Nem mesmo quando se casou, há mais de 40 anos (está viúvo há 20 e não teve filhos). Ajeitou uma casa para a mulher, mas não arredou o pé de lá sempre estava cuidando de alguém da família, ora a mãe, ora um irmão enfermo. Vou morrer aqui, diz. Mas só quando o capitão lá de cima desejar. Tem também quem chega para pedir uns trocados. É que Zé costuma distribuir seu salário aos pedintes. Velhos pescadores que não podem mais trabalhar, desempregados e inválidos conhecem de perto sua bondade. Mesmo aposentado há mais de 20 anos, Zé Peixe continua trabalhando por gosto. Acorda cedo, com o escuro. Não tem hora certa para trabalhar. Depende do fluxo de navios no porto. E das marés. Acostumou seu corpo a comer pouquinho, porque barriga cheia não se dá com o mar. Dá gastura. De manhã, basta um pão com café preto. E, depois, só fruta. Quando passa o dia inteiro no porto, faz jejum. O doutor já confirmou: Zé tem coração de menino. Nunca fumou nem bebeu. Seu vício mesmo é o mar. Se não está a pé, está com sua bicicleta. Sempre descalço. Só usa sapatos aos domingos, para entrar na missa, ou em ocasiões especiais. Teve uma época que, para não fazer feio, o danado andava com um sapato. Um dia descobri que o sapato não tinha sola, confessa o amigo Zé Galera. Ele é o único que tem autorização para andar maltrapilho no terminal marítimo, sempre de bermuda acima da cintura e pés no chão. Por ser uma raridade, um cidadão totalmentefora do padrão, ele virou uma exceção às regras, conclui Galera, que aprendeu a nadar com ele aos 6 anos e hoje é seu companheiro na praticagem. Ele é meu herói, diz o deputado Fernando Gabeira. Quando estava exilado na Alemanha, o deputado viu uma reportagem sobre Zé Peixe. A história do bravo nadador chamou sua atenção. Without his fantastic models, this project would not have progressed as far as it did. This will probably be my last video upload for a long, long time. This is a project I started over a year ago, the goal was to remake the last zone from Sonic & Knuckles as a 3D animation. I wanted to add additional story points at the beginning and end to compliment the existing canon of the game. This is evidenced by my little additive prologue where Sonic finds the emeralds in space. I had planned to have a sky-diving sequence where Sonic loses his power at the end, and dives after the falling master emerald with Tails picking both of them up in the nick of time. I would have shown them flying to the floating island, dropping off the emerald and roll the credits with them flying off just as the game did it. The plan was to finish. So why didn't I finish? I got burnt out. Animation is a tough craft. It's especially tough when you're not sure of your own abilities. Slap that on top of having a full time animation job at the time, and it's a nightmare having the will to make time for this. You spend all your day on Autodesk Maya, the last thing you want to do when you come home is load up Maya again. I'm releasing this now because I think things have really changed for me. I've moved away from my animation job, and got a new job working at BioWare, which is fantastic. I don't do animation there which is nice, so there's definitely a gap in that regard that might make me come back and finish. There's always that hope. I want to finish so much, there's so much I want to do for this project. So hopefully one day... Esta é a história de um peixe chamado José. Há mais de seis décadas ele passa a maior parte do tempo na água. Nada quase diariamente cerca de 10 quilômetros por dia, está habituado a saltar de navios de mais de 40 metros de altura e é capaz de façanhas homéricas no mar mesmo com seus 80 anos. Zé Peixe, como é conhecido em Aracaju, é reverenciado por marinheiros dos sete cantos por sua humildade, bravura e profundo conhecimento das coisas do mar. E, como toda lenda, tem suas particularidades. Desde que começou a trabalhar no porto de Aracaju, Zé Peixe nunca mais tomou um bom banho de chuveiro. Também quase não bebe água doce. O que faz de Zé Peixe uma espécie rara é a maneira como trabalha: ele vai buscar o navio a nado, enquanto seus colegas recorrem a um barco de apoio. E, quando tira o navio do porto, em vez de voltar de barco ele salta no mar. Faz assim: enrola a camisa, coloca junto com os documentos e os trocados em um saco plástico e amarra firme no calção; mergulha e volta para casa com braçadas elegantes, ritmadas, sem movimentar as pernas para não atiçar os tubarões. Zé Peixe, ganhou fama internacional, espalhada por navegantes de fora que lá atracaram. Os gringos me chamam de Joe Fish, diz. Certa vez, um capitão russo de um cargueiro chegou a pedir que o detivessem quando estava para se lançar ao mar achou que ele estava se suicidando. Zé é peixe miudinho. Tem apenas 1,60 metro de altura e 53 quilos. Mesmo franzino, já realizou muitas grandezas. A maior proeza foi quando socorreu o navio Mercury, que ardia em chamas em alto-mar, vindo das plataformas da Petrobrás e com funcionários a bordo. Zé pegou carona num rebocador, ligeiro chegou ao navio e conduziu a embarcação até um ponto onde todos pudessem saltar e nadar para terra firme. Por causa de sua condição física exemplar, ele conseguiu salvar inúmeras vidas, conta Brabo, o chefe dos práticos, que há 26 anos convive com Peixinho. Zé nunca saiu da casa onde nasceu, umas das mais antigas de Aracaju. Nem mesmo quando se casou, há mais de 40 anos (está viúvo há 20 e não teve filhos). Ajeitou uma casa para a mulher, mas não arredou o pé de lá sempre estava cuidando de alguém da família, ora a mãe, ora um irmão enfermo. Vou morrer aqui, diz. Mas só quando o capitão lá de cima desejar. Tem também quem chega para pedir uns trocados. É que Zé costuma distribuir seu salário aos pedintes. Velhos pescadores que não podem mais trabalhar, desempregados e inválidos conhecem de perto sua bondade. Mesmo aposentado há mais de 20 anos, Zé Peixe continua trabalhando por gosto. Acorda cedo, com o escuro. Não tem hora certa para trabalhar. Depende do fluxo de navios no porto. E das marés. Acostumou seu corpo a comer pouquinho, porque barriga cheia não se dá com o mar. Dá gastura. De manhã, basta um pão com café preto. E, depois, só fruta. Quando passa o dia inteiro no porto, faz jejum. O doutor já confirmou: Zé tem coração de menino. Nunca fumou nem bebeu. Seu vício mesmo é o mar. Se não está a pé, está com sua bicicleta. Sempre descalço. Só usa sapatos aos domingos, para entrar na missa, ou em ocasiões especiais. Teve uma época que, para não fazer feio, o danado andava com um sapato. Um dia descobri que o sapato não tinha sola, confessa o amigo Zé Galera. Ele é o único que tem autorização para andar maltrapilho no terminal marítimo, sempre de bermuda acima da cintura e pés no chão. Por ser uma raridade, um cidadão totalmentefora do padrão, ele virou uma exceção às regras, conclui Galera, que aprendeu a nadar com ele aos 6 anos e hoje é seu companheiro na praticagem. Ele é meu herói, diz o deputado Fernando Gabeira. Quando estava exilado na Alemanha, o deputado viu uma reportagem sobre Zé Peixe. A história do bravo nadador chamou sua atenção.
