Earthquake Insulation - Japan April 2010 This report, released last year, gave a chilling prediction about the likelihood of a major earthquake hitting Japan. Now that its warning has come to bear, it offers a powerful background to the disaster. Seismic activities in and around Tokyo have been alarming researchers for quite a while. In this report, researcher and government advisor Takehiko Yamamura insists a disaster is just around the corner for Japan. "We can expect an earthquake like this every five years...it's only a matter of time...". After Kobe was reduced to rubble in less than 20 seconds in 1995, the nation stepped up its earthquake technology. Urban planners in Tokyo have confidence in their latest shock-absorbing equipment; "For the first time people should not have to flee from their homes, but can feel safe inside them". Yet Yamamura argues that the biggest problem is the attitude of the Japanese; "people still believe in the myth of their own invulnerability. We must constantly be on guard".
