Il film è stato completato il 17 maggio 2007, dopo un periodo di lavorazione durato due mesi. Il film racconta la vita del leader dei Joy Division, Ian Curtis (1956-1980), interpretato dall'attore Sam Riley, mentre la moglie di Curtis, Deborah Woodruff, è interpretata dall'attrice Samantha Morton. Parte della sceneggiatura è stata liberamente tratta dal romanzo autobiografico di Deborah Woodruff Curtis, Touching From a Distance. In Inghilterra, nella metà anni '70, i giovani cercavano la propria identità ascoltando i vinili dei loro miti (Buzzcocks, Sex Pistols, David Bowie). Si vestivano come loro, ne emulavano le movenze e si truccavano davanti allo specchio delle loro camerette tappezzate di poster sognando le luci del palcoscenico. Qualcuno ce la fece. A Macclesfield, a pochi chilometri da Manchester, un Ian Curtis appena ventenne si unì ad altri tre ragazzacci - Peter Hook, Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris - per formare i Joy Division, band di culto che segnò l'inizio della scena post-punk. Il fotografo e videomaker Anton Corbijn fa il suo esordio in lungo raccontando la storia di Ian Curtis, morto suicida a soli 23 anni. Il titolo fa riferimento alla canzone dedicata alla vita spezzata di una conoscente del leader dei Joy Division ("She's Lost Control") ma sembra anche descrivere quell'impossibilità di controllare il proprio corpo scosso dalle crisi epilettiche che fecero cadere il musicista in depressione. O, ancora, la mancanza di controllo nella vita affettiva, divisa tra la moglie sposata troppo giovane e l'amante conosciuta nel backstage. Liberamente tratto dal romanzo autobiografico di Deborah Curtis, "Touching From a Distance", il film di Corbijn non si adagia sulla figura del mito, non ne maschera il vissuto con false apparenze ma ne racconta i limiti e i drammi senza patetismi. Persino di fronte alla sua morte (preannunciata, nei modi, da una semplice inquadratura) preferisce la discrezione dello stacco della macchina da presa mostrando una sensibilità che troppo spesso manca al cinema. Girato a colori e in seguito trasferito in B/N per mantenere intatto lo spirito e il mood della band (ma va detto che il regista è noto per le sue foto in bianco e nero), Control riesuma un'epoca di grande fermento musicale utilizzando tutto sommato poche canzoni. Se da una parte ci sono i contributi degli stessi Joy Division e delle band in voga in quel periodo, dall'altra ci sono i silenzi e i lievi scricchiolii degli interni inglesi per definire le due anime di Curtis. Il cantante che si dimenava sul palco sotto gli occhi ammirati dei fan, e il ragazzo privato, confuso e straziato dall'improvviso successo. L'attore inglese Sam Riley offre una delle migliori reincarnazioni di una celebrità riportata in vita al cinema. Il carisma e il tormento del cantante rivivono sul suo volto e nei suoi gesti, resi ancor più reali da un utilizzo della macchina da presa che senza nessun tipo di artificio ci consegna Ian Curtis, nudo e puro. Oltre alla carriera artistica, il film tratta anche della vita extra-matrimoniale e sentimentale, così come dell'epilessia di cui Curtis soffriva in modo grave, suggerendo che anche questa abbia contribuito al suo suicidio, avvenuto alla vigilia del primo tour negli Stati Uniti della sua band. Il film è stato presentato alla Quinzaine des Réalisateurs del Festival di Cannes il 17 maggio 2007, riscuotendo grande successo di pubblico e di critica, vincendo il "Premio dell'arte & di Essai di CICAE" di Regards Jeunes, il premio come miglior film europeo e come miglior film del Sidebar. Anton Corbijn, il regista del film, è un fan dei Joy Division, e ha diretto il video musicale dei New Order di "Atmosphere" nel 1988, continuando da allora a girare video musicali, anche per i Nirvana, U2 e Depeche Mode. Per lanciare il film, Corbijn ha speso metà dei 4,5 milioni di dollari di tasca propria. Tra i finanziatori del film si nota la presenza di Martin Gore, membro proprio dei Depeche Mode. Il film è stato girato in bianco e nero per "riflettere l'atmosfera di tensione presente nei Joy Division" a detta di Todd Eckert e di Orian Williams, i produttori. Le altre canzoni dei Joy Division, presenti nel film, sono cantate e suonate dagli attori che interpretano la band, ad eccezione di "Love will tear us apart" e "Atmosphere", presenti nelle versioni originali incise dai Joy Division. Le canzoni di artisti anni settanta come David Bowie e dei Sex Pistols sono riprese da registrazioni dell'epoca. I New Order hanno prodotto alcune canzoni per la colonna sonora. Il film è stato completato il 17 maggio 2007, dopo un periodo di lavorazione durato due mesi. Il film racconta la vita del leader dei Joy Division, Ian Curtis (1956-1980), interpretato dall'attore Sam Riley, mentre la moglie di Curtis, Deborah Woodruff, è interpretata dall'attrice Samantha Morton. Parte della sceneggiatura è stata liberamente tratta dal romanzo autobiografico di Deborah Woodruff Curtis, Touching From a Distance. In Inghilterra, nella metà anni '70, i giovani cercavano la propria identità ascoltando i vinili dei loro miti (Buzzcocks, Sex Pistols, David Bowie). Si vestivano come loro, ne emulavano le movenze e si truccavano davanti allo specchio delle loro camerette tappezzate di poster sognando le luci del palcoscenico. Qualcuno ce la fece. A Macclesfield, a pochi chilometri da Manchester, un Ian Curtis appena ventenne si unì ad altri tre ragazzacci - Peter Hook, Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris - per formare i Joy Division, band di culto che segnò l'inizio della scena post-punk. Il fotografo e videomaker Anton Corbijn fa il suo esordio in lungo raccontando la storia di Ian Curtis, morto suicida a soli 23 anni. Il titolo fa riferimento alla canzone dedicata alla vita spezzata di una conoscente del leader dei Joy Division ("She's Lost Control") ma sembra anche descrivere quell'impossibilità di controllare il proprio corpo scosso dalle crisi epilettiche che fecero cadere il musicista in depressione. O, ancora, la mancanza di controllo nella vita affettiva, divisa tra la moglie sposata troppo giovane e l'amante conosciuta nel backstage. Liberamente tratto dal romanzo autobiografico di Deborah Curtis, "Touching From a Distance", il film di Corbijn non si adagia sulla figura del mito, non ne maschera il vissuto con false apparenze ma ne racconta i limiti e i drammi senza patetismi. Persino di fronte alla sua morte (preannunciata, nei modi, da una semplice inquadratura) preferisce la discrezione dello stacco della macchina da presa mostrando una sensibilità che troppo spesso manca al cinema. Girato a colori e in seguito trasferito in B/N per mantenere intatto lo spirito e il mood della band (ma va detto che il regista è noto per le sue foto in bianco e nero), Control riesuma un'epoca di grande fermento musicale utilizzando tutto sommato poche canzoni. Se da una parte ci sono i contributi degli stessi Joy Division e delle band in voga in quel periodo, dall'altra ci sono i silenzi e i lievi scricchiolii degli interni inglesi per definire le due anime di Curtis. Il cantante che si dimenava sul palco sotto gli occhi ammirati dei fan, e il ragazzo privato, confuso e straziato dall'improvviso successo. L'attore inglese Sam Riley offre una delle migliori reincarnazioni di una celebrità riportata in vita al cinema. Il carisma e il tormento del cantante rivivono sul suo volto e nei suoi gesti, resi ancor più reali da un utilizzo della macchina da presa che senza nessun tipo di artificio ci consegna Ian Curtis, nudo e puro. Oltre alla carriera artistica, il film tratta anche della vita extra-matrimoniale e sentimentale, così come dell'epilessia di cui Curtis soffriva in modo grave, suggerendo che anche questa abbia contribuito al suo suicidio, avvenuto alla vigilia del primo tour negli Stati Uniti della sua band. Il film è stato presentato alla Quinzaine des Réalisateurs del Festival di Cannes il 17 maggio 2007, riscuotendo grande successo di pubblico e di critica, vincendo il "Premio dell'arte & di Essai di CICAE" di Regards Jeunes, il premio come miglior film europeo e come miglior film del Sidebar. Anton Corbijn, il regista del film, è un fan dei Joy Division, e ha diretto il video musicale dei New Order di "Atmosphere" nel 1988, continuando da allora a girare video musicali, anche per i Nirvana, U2 e Depeche Mode. Per lanciare il film, Corbijn ha speso metà dei 4,5 milioni di dollari di tasca propria. Tra i finanziatori del film si nota la presenza di Martin Gore, membro proprio dei Depeche Mode. Il film è stato girato in bianco e nero per "riflettere l'atmosfera di tensione presente nei Joy Division" a detta di Todd Eckert e di Orian Williams, i produttori. Le altre canzoni dei Joy Division, presenti nel film, sono cantate e suonate dagli attori che interpretano la band, ad eccezione di "Love will tear us apart" e "Atmosphere", presenti nelle versioni originali incise dai Joy Division. Le canzoni di artisti anni settanta come David Bowie e dei Sex Pistols sono riprese da registrazioni dell'epoca. I New Order hanno prodotto alcune canzoni per la colonna sonora.
