Animal Rights
By tohokuis

Hello! Thank you so much for watching! This is a movie I made on animal rights for my school project. I put all my effort into making this, because I really want many people to watch this video and know about the facts. And I hope you will realize how important it is to care about this issue after watching this. If you want to learn more or have any questions/comments, please leave them or contact me at crystal420@me.com! Thank you!

*for the second-time-viewers, I'm sorry, there was a problem with the music in the last video I uploaded. So I fixed that and uploaded it again. I didn't want to delete the comments some of the viewers left, so I copied and pasted them on this one. The account I used is not "tohokuis" because it didn't work when I tried with that. But it's still me! I'm sorry for the confusion...!

International Women's Day (March 8) History

International Womens Day is celebrated in many countries around the world. It is a day when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political. It is an occasion for looking back on past struggles and accomplishments, and more importantly, for looking ahead to the untapped potential and opportunities that await future generations of women.

In 1975, during International Women's Year, the United Nations began celebrating International Womens Day on 8 March. Two years later, in December 1977, the General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming a United Nations Day for Women's Rights and International Peace to be observed on any day of the year by Member States, in accordance with their historical and national traditions. In adopting its resolution, the General Assembly recognized the role of women in peace efforts and development and urged an end to discrimination and an increase of support for womens full and equal participation.

History

International Womens Day first emerged from the activities of labour movements at the turn of the twentieth century in North America and across Europe.

1909: The first National Woman's Day was observed in the United States on 28 February. The Socialist Party of America designated this day in honour of the 1908 garment workers strike in New York, where women protested against working conditions.

1910: The Socialist International, meeting in Copenhagen, established a Women's Day, international in character, to honour the movement for women's rights and to build support for achieving universal suffrage for women. The proposal was greeted with unanimous approval by the conference of over 100 women from 17 countries, which included the first three women elected to the Finnish Parliament. No fixed date was selected for the observance. ..."

"The Charter of the United Nations, signed in 1945, was the first international agreement to affirm the principle of equality between women and men. Since then, the UN has helped create a historic legacy of internationally-agreed strategies, standards, programes and goals to advance the status of women worldwide.

Over the years, the UN and its technical agencies have promoted the participation of women as equal partners with men in achieving sustainable development, peace, security, and full respect for human rights. The empowerment of women continues to be a central feature of the UNs efforts to address social, economic and political challenges across the globe. ... Women Watch Article

WHEN THE STATE DECLARES WAR ON THE PEOPLE 2
By SPRINGTHUNDERFILMS

In 2009, the Indian Government launched a major anti-Maoist offensive
in forest areas Operation Green Hunt. Fact-finding investigations
have uncovered the atrocities security forces are committing in these areas,
but now those very findings are being questioned.

This 10-minute preview contains interviews with victims and
their testimony about what is happening in Chhattisgarh.
The clear intention of the State - to wipe out all resistance
through terror in the name of fighting the Maoists -
is demonstrated in this film.

For a New Liberty: The Libertarian Manifesto [Chapter 1]

In "For A New Liberty: The Libertarian Manifesto," Murrary Rothbard proposes a once-and-for-all escape from the two major political parties, the ideologies they embrace, and their central plans for using state power against people. Libertarianism is Rothbard's radical alternative that says state power is unworkable and immoral and ought to be curbed and finally overthrown.

The entire audiobook (15 chapters, and an Introduction by Lew Rockwell) is available for free download in MP3 format at http://www.mises.org/media.aspx?actio...

U.N. Surprise: Victim of Qaddafi Torture Confronts Libyan Chair of Durban 2
By HumanRightsUN

Story covered in France 24 satellite TV; Swiss TV; The New Republic online....

Durban II Dispatch: Libya on Trial

Geneva, Switzerland

Libya was chosen in 2007 to chair the preparatory committee for the UN Durban Review Conference--notwithstanding the irony of an egregious human-rights violator chairing a human rights conference. For the past three days, the committee has been holding sessions to finalize the conference's draft statement, upon which many countries will base their decision whether to attend the conference this week. On Friday, the last day, NGOs were given 30 minutes to weigh in.

Amidst the anti-Israel rants from all the usual NGOs, Libyan ambassador Najjat Al-Hajjaji (who was chairing the meeting) gave the floor to UN Watch...

But sitting in their chair was not Hillel Neuer, the group's executive director and usual mouthpiece, but Ashraf El Hagog, the Palestinian doctor who was falsely accused of and sentenced to death for infecting hundreds of Libyan children with HIV (along with five Bulgarian nurses). El Hagog and the nurses were held in Libya on death row for nine years, mistreated and tortured, until their release was negotiated by France last year.

"Madame Chairman," El Hagog began, staring steely eyed at the Libyan ambassador. "I dont know if you recognize me. I am the Palestinian medical intern who was scapegoated by your country, Libya, in the HIV case in the Benghazi hospital, together with the five Bulgarian nurses."

Al-Hajjaji immediately started banging her gavel. "Stop... stop.... I ask you to stop," she yelled, first looking miffed, then exasperated. "You are, you are not addressing the agenda item... I will allow you to resume only if you address the agenda item we are discussing." The room immediately fell silent.

El Hagog, being coached by Neuer sitting next to him, tried to introduce some amendments to the statement "based on my own suffering," and was again interrupted by Al-Hajjaji banging her gavel. But he continued recounting the story of his torture, then said, "All of this, which lasted for nearly a decade, was for only one reason: because the Libyan government was looking to scapegoat foreigners. Madame Chair, if that is not discrimination, then what is?" After listing the amendments, he concluded: "Madame Chair, Libya told this conference that it practices no inequality or discrimination. But then how do you account for what was done to me, to my colleagues, and to my family...?"

At this point, Hajjaji recognized a point of order from ... the Libyan delegation, who said that El Hagog was not speaking on the correct agenda item. Hajjaji used the objection as an excuse to move on to the next speaker.

17 avril 2009, 19:30

UNICEF: "A Minute for My Rights" video project in Argentina
By unicef

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina, 1 April 2009 Young people have discovered an important medium for promoting children's rights in Argentina. Since 2005, 'A minute for my rights' (Un minuto por mis derechos) has brought creative children together to make one-minute films.

Over 2,000 young people aged 12 to 21 from various backgrounds have participated in the project over the past four years. Most live in impoverished areas of the country and have limited opportunities for creative expression.

During one recent five-month period, a group of participants learned technical and visual skills, and then used them to create and produce a series of one-minute videos. In the process, they engaged in dialogue with their peers, reflected on their rights and thought critically through the creative process.

The project grew out of the global OneMinutesJr initiative, launched in 2002 by the European Cultural Foundation, the One Minutes Foundation and UNICEF. In Argentina, the project focused on children's rights because its organizers saw a need for wider public knowledge and discussion of this issue.

Operation Bluestar The Untold Story Of India Part 2
By RajKaregaKhalsanet

http://www.RajKaregaKhalsa.Net
http://www.sikhee.com

On 3 June 1984, a curfew was imposed on the state of Punjab with all methods of communication and public travel suspended. Electricity supplies were also interrupted, creating a total blackout and cutting off the state from the rest of India and the world. Complete censorship was placed on all types of Media. To this day, what Army action took place remains unknown and unreported.

The Times reporter Michael Hamlyn reported that journalists were picked up from their hotels at 5 a.m. in a military bus, taken to the adjoining border of the state of Haryana and "were abandoned there". The main towns in Punjab were put under curfew, transportation was banned, news blackout was imposed and Punjab was "cut off from the outside world". A group of journalists who later tried to drive into Punjab were stopped at the road block at Punjab border and were threatened to be shot if they proceeded. The Indian nationals who worked with the foreign media were also banned. The press criticized these actions by Government as an "obvious attempt to attack the temple without the eyes of foreign press on them".

What little is known is Operation Blue Star coincided with a Sikh annual festival. Pilgrims, including the elderly and children, were trapped inside the temple when the operation began and so there was a massacre with a staggeringly huge number of civillian casualties as a result.

Then GOC of the Indian Army, S. K. Sinha who was sacked at the last moment had criticized the Government's projection of the attack as a "last resort"; and stated that the attack was in plans 1 year and 6 months prior to the actual day of attack. S. K. Sinha and Mark Tully report that the army had been rehearsing the attack for this time in the replica of Golden Temple they had built at a secret location near Chakrata Cantonment in the Doon Valley.

During the operation the Sikh Reference Library caught fire and many rare books, priceless artefacts and manuscripts were destroyed.

The timing of Operation Blue Star coincided with a Sikh religious day, regarding the martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev (the founder of Golden Temple), and Sikhs from all over the world visit the temple on this day. In 1736 the Golden Temple was attacked by the Mughal army, resulting in heavy casualties of civilian Sikhs. Attack of Ahmad Shah Abdali on Golden Temple (Darbar Sahib) also came on Vaisakhi day when Sikhs gather in large numbers in Amritsar. The timing of the attack by the Indian Army was widely viewed as an attempt to inflict maximum casualties on Sikhs and demoralize them. In fact one of the reasons for heavy civilian casualty was the choice of day of Operation Blue Star by Government as large number of Sikh followers congregated at the Golden Temple complex during the martyrdom-day of Guru Arjan Dev. The Sikh community's anger and suffering was further increased by comments from leading newspaper editors, such as Ramnath Goenka, terming the operation as " A greater victory than the win over Bangladesh, this is the greatest victory of Mrs. Gandhi".
