RECORDING I miced each individual drum (snare top AND bottom were miced), plus two overheads, ran this through a mixer, got a decent mix and recorded with ONLY ONE stereo channel.. no multitrack recorder(s) :) I compressed the final mix to HELL.. to get a more aggressive sound, to make it sit better in with the original song (and hopefully overpower the original drums), detailed compression settings: 20:1 with a threshold of -20db and a compensation gain of 15db, with both separate channels (LEFT and RIGHT, from the mixer) sent to a stereo sub-group, and the compression settings applied to THIS group, it gave a nice compact and aggressive result.. further mastering was needed to equalize the final mix and control peak levels and such, to have it fit in with the original music track. Pop and Rock politics aside, this was one of the grooviest songs i have ever jammed to.. was an incredible amount of fun. (As for the drumming intro; it's the only part of the song that was written beforehand, the rest is all improvised on the spot, to keep things fresh and unpredictable.) I have to emphasize, I know calling this a "cover" is wrong, seeing as I only PARTLY stayed true to the song's drums (or lack thereof), through the WHOLE song i play some variations of the beats, phrasing and fills, since 99% of what i play is improvised. Even though i have done my fair share of session and studio drumming, that has little to zero effect on these video's, I kind of see them as live performances. This is a "drum cover" of Inslowmotion's song, Stupid Things. As some of you propably already know, the band I play in is called Inslowmotion. We recently finished recording our self-titled debut full length album, which will be released early next year. The Hybrid Series will contain 5 of our songs, so you guys can hear what we sound like, also so you can hear what type of drum parts I write myself :) The 5 songs that will be uploading will be three english songs, and two Afrikaans songs. Concerning the drum parts.. this is pretty much a pop-punk song, with two movements. The first is straight forward and pretty anthemic, and the second is a way out, strange, very full, (and almost "stupid", hehe) movement. In this second and last movement of the song I play one of the grooves in my arsenal that I am most proud of. It turns into two-dimensional polyrhythm, and then a three dimensional polyrhythm just before it goes to the toms-variaton of the same groove. Written as a simulation of and metaphor for the contradicting complexity of doing stupid things, even though you know you shouldn't. I love it :) As I always say, these video's are to be viewed as live performances, NOT studio recordings. I don't hold back, I don't underplay.. this was fun and I totally went out to enjoy it :) Critique in terms of originally written performances is always difficult, since it is so very very subjective; that said, I will LOVE to hear what you guys think of our material, please rate the video and leave comments, it'll be MUCH appreciated. This is a drum cover of Usher's song, Caught Up. First off I should say I used this song as a warm-up.. It was inserted at the beginning of the third set and I used the verses to get the tightness going and the choruses for fills, loops, etc. I really dig hip-hop, I love solid grooves and tight phrases.. LOVE it. So obviously this was then a LOT of fun to do, the song is pretty basic, I went a little nuts in the choruses, was so so so much fun. I should also mention, this was totally inspired by Aaron Spears' performance of this song at the 2008 Modern Drummer festival. I saw a clip of this and HAD to cover it, looked like an insane amount of fun. I've also really gotten into the drumming of Aaron himself, aswell as Gerald Heyward.. unbelievably talented muso's, MAXIMUM respect. I am totally convinced you can't really play drums until you can groove, and these guys redefine what it means to get and to stay in the pocket. [HP200B] RECORDING [Two Panasonic NVGS250 3CCD Cameras] I miced each individual drum, plus two overheads, ran this through a mixer, got a decent mix and recorded with ONLY ONE stereo channel.. no multitrack recorder(s) :) I compressed the final mix to HELL.. to get a more aggressive sound, to make it sit better in with the original song (and hopefully overpower the original drums), detailed compression settings: 20:1 with a threshold of -20db and a compensation gain of 15db, with both seperate channels (LEFT and RIGHT, from the mixer) sent to a stereo sub-group, and the compression settings applied to THIS group, it gave a nice compact and aggressive result.. further mastering was needed to equalize the final mix and control peak levels and such. This is a "drum cover" of Inslowmotion's song, Stupid Things. As some of you propably already know, the band I play in is called Inslowmotion. We recently finished recording our self-titled debut full length album, which will be released early next year. The Hybrid Series will contain 5 of our songs, so you guys can hear what we sound like, also so you can hear what type of drum parts I write myself :) The 5 songs that will be uploading will be three english songs, and two Afrikaans songs. Concerning the drum parts.. this is pretty much a pop-punk song, with two movements. The first is straight forward and pretty anthemic, and the second is a way out, strange, very full, (and almost "stupid", hehe) movement. In this second and last movement of the song I play one of the grooves in my arsenal that I am most proud of. It turns into two-dimensional polyrhythm, and then a three dimensional polyrhythm just before it goes to the toms-variaton of the same groove. Written as a simulation of and metaphor for the contradicting complexity of doing stupid things, even though you know you shouldn't. I love it :) As I always say, these video's are to be viewed as live performances, NOT studio recordings. I don't hold back, I don't underplay.. this was fun and I totally went out to enjoy it :) Critique in terms of originally written performances is always difficult, since it is so very very subjective; that said, I will LOVE to hear what you guys think of our material, please rate the video and leave comments, it'll be MUCH appreciated. This is a drum cover of Usher's song, Caught Up. First off I should say I used this song as a warm-up.. It was inserted at the beginning of the third set and I used the verses to get the tightness going and the choruses for fills, loops, etc. I really dig hip-hop, I love solid grooves and tight phrases.. LOVE it. So obviously this was then a LOT of fun to do, the song is pretty basic, I went a little nuts in the choruses, was so so so much fun. I should also mention, this was totally inspired by Aaron Spears' performance of this song at the 2008 Modern Drummer festival. I saw a clip of this and HAD to cover it, looked like an insane amount of fun. I've also really gotten into the drumming of Aaron himself, aswell as Gerald Heyward.. unbelievably talented muso's, MAXIMUM respect. I am totally convinced you can't really play drums until you can groove, and these guys redefine what it means to get and to stay in the pocket. Cymbals: Paiste PST 5 UNIVERSAL setup: 14" Hats 16" Crash 20" Ride 8" Istanbul Mehmet Splash Secondary Ride: Zildjian Planet Z (very muted, tightly screwed down) Secondary Crash: Paiste 502 16" Crash Bassdrum Pedal: - Tama Iron Cobra Jnr. [HP200B] RECORDING [Two Panasonic NVGS250 3CCD Cameras] I miced each individual drum, plus two overheads, ran this through a mixer, got a decent mix and recorded with ONLY ONE stereo channel.. no multitrack recorder(s) :) I compressed the final mix to HELL.. to get a more aggressive sound, to make it sit better in with the original song (and hopefully overpower the original drums), detailed compression settings: 20:1 with a threshold of -20db and a compensation gain of 15db, with both seperate channels (LEFT and RIGHT, from the mixer) sent to a stereo sub-group, and the compression settings applied to THIS group, it gave a nice compact and aggressive result.. further mastering was needed to equalize the final mix and control peak levels and such. [View \| Download]	Cobus - Vanilla Sky - Umbrella (Drum Cover) By deedlebag Laus Deo Semper. http://www.cobuspotgieter.com http://www.facebook.com/deedlebag This is a drum cover (or remix) of Vanilla Sky's cover of Rihanna's song, Umbrella. (whoa, now that's one complicated sentence) Crazy amounts of fun, this one. Loved the groovy parts in the intro and outtro, aswell as the heavy stuff in the middle. Obviously the last few choruses were also quite nice to do :) (As for the outtro doublebass crossovers; it's the only part of the song that was written beforehand, the rest is all improvised on the spot, to keep things fresh and unpredictable.) I have to emphasize, I know calling this a "cover" is wrong, seeing as I only PARTLY stayed true to the song's drums (or lack thereof), through the WHOLE song i play some variations of the beats, phrasing and fills, since 99% of what i play is improvised. Even though i have done my fair share of session and studio drumming, that has little to zero effect on these video's, I kind of see them as live performances. I'm NOT aiming to be accurate to the original drums, I'm just aiming to enjoy myself.
