Learn English 80 - Book
By podEnglish

Focus: reported speech and difference between say/tell
Language: say/tell and "end up"

CLERK: Hi, can I help you?
CUSTOMER: Yes. I'm looking for something to expand my vocabulary. I bought a few books last year, but they're not very effective. Do you have any suggestions?
CLERK: Well, we have some books on tape. You can listen to them and read along. I've heard great things about this series. How about these?
CUSTOMER: Yes, that might work. Then I could listen on my way to work.
CLERK: And we have English movies on the third floor. Maybe that could help your vocabulary.
CUSTOMER: Yes, but I always end up turning the subtitles on. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. I'll head up there later.
CLERK: You know, my son is studying English at school now, and they use a website to study.
CUSTOMER: Really? Do you remember the address?
CLERK: What did he tell me? I think it's Englishtown.com. He says it's great.

Learn English 78 - Sales Figures
By podEnglish

Focus: modals
Language: should / might

JANE: OK. As you can see from my report, we're doing well in most sectors. However, sales in Western Europe are down by five percent since July, so we need to focus on that today.
PETER: Almost 30% of our revenue was coming from Western Europe at the start of this year. Now it's closer to 25%. What's the reason?
JANE: Well, we decreased our advertising budget by almost half this year. I think that might be reflected in our sales.
PETER: I'm not sure about that. Sales figures are up 20% in Spain this quarter and we have almost no advertising coverage there. How do you explain that?
JANE: Simple. The sales team in Barcelona is excellent. I think once we establish a stronger training program, sales should pick up in Europe. What other factors do we need to consider?
PETER: Well we can't leave out market forces. What effect has the introduction of the euro had on sales?
JANE: Well, it's hard to say for sure at this early stage, but software sales in the region are down 3% this quarter, and they're predicted to fall by another 0.5% before the end of the year.
PETER: How about Latin America?
JANE: Let's see... In Mexico there's been a fifteen percent increase this quarter.
PETER: So, would you say Europe was our main area of concern right now?
JANE: Yes, definitely.

Learn English 77 - Studying english
By podEnglish

Focus: discourse markers
Language: well / hmmm / Errr / for example /

EXAMINER: OK. Let me start by asking you a little about yourself. Why are you studying English?
STUDENT: Mainly because English allows me to communicate with people from all over the world, and I hope to study abroad and maybe even work in an English-speaking country one day.
EXAMINER: So where do you hope to study?
STUDENT: Well, I've applied to several places in the States, and one in England.
EXAMINER: And what would you like to study?
STUDENT: Well, I'm interested in reading, so maybe I'll study English Literature. I'm also quite interested in Linguistics, so maybe I'll study languages as well.
EXAMINER: Okay. So you are interested in the different variations of English spoken around the world. Can you tell me some of the differences between American and British English?
STUDENT: Well, one example.... The present perfect tense is less commonly used in American English. For example a British speaker will say "Have you eaten?", but an American speaker will say "Did you eat?"
EXAMINER: Good. Can you think of anything else?
STUDENT: Well, there are many variations in vocabulary. For example...

Learn English 66 - Fears
By podEnglish

KIRSTEN: Hey, Jen. What's up?
JEN: Nothing much. How about you?
KIRSTEN: Well, I'm pretty nervous.
JEN: Nervous? What about?
KIRSTEN: I have to give a presentation tomorrow in front of fifty people.
Have you ever given a presentation before? Are you a good public speaker?
JEN: Oh, at your company?
KIRSTEN: Uh huh.
JEN: Cool. You must be excited.
KIRSTEN: No way! I'm not good at public speaking.
JEN: Really? Why? There's nothing to be afraid of. Actually, I like speaking in front of people, I think it's exciting.
KIRSTEN: Are you kidding? You're not scared of speaking in front of a big group?
JEN: No, I think it's a piece of cake, as long as I have something interesting to talk about.
KIRSTEN: Well, I don't think the topic is boring, I just get nervous about being in the spotlight like that.
JEN: Hmm. Well, when I'm scared of something I just try to relax and take it easy. Just remember that your colleagues are interested in what you have to say.
KIRSTEN: Maybe you're right. I don't think I'm good at it, but I guess giving a presentation is nothing to be scared of.
JEN: Exactly. Just try to relax and I'm sure you'll be fine.

Learn English 76 - Office Tour
By podEnglish

Focus: compare quite and rather
Language: rhetorical question: do you mind?

KATE: Sorry I'm a bit late. The traffic was atrocious
CAROLINE: No problem. Well, I'll be showing you around today. Shall we get started?
KATE: Let's do it.
CAROLINE: As you can see, this is an open plan office.
KATE: Yes, it's rather large. How many people work here?
CAROLINE: We employ approximately 100 in this office alone. We've also got two plants outside the city with another 250 staff.
KATE: So quite a large company then?
CAROLINE: A very small company considering that we are a Public Limited Company. I guess we are medium-sized.
KATE: So what do they do down here?
CAROLINE: That's our sales department. That's our marketing department.
KATE: And this is reception, right?
CAROLINE: Yes, this is our main reception area. Oh, the phone is ringing... mind if I answer it?

Learn English 73 - Sightseeing
By podEnglish

Focus: Articles
Language: Common words and phrases using definite, indefinite, and zero articles

MS. ZHANG: Where do you want to go sightseeing today?
MS. PHILLIPS: I want to visit this temple I've read about in the guide book.
MS. ZHANG: OK, but I will buy the entrance ticket.
MS. PHILLIPS: Oh, I didn't realize we have to pay to get in.
MR. ZHANG: Yes, in China, there is a small fee to enter museums, parks and temples.
MS. PHILLIPS: That's very different from back home . Have you ever heard of anyone paying to go to church?
MR. ZHANG: You're right. In the West you don't make a direct payment at the entrance but the congregation is usually expected to make a contribution during collection .
MS. PHILLIPS: Oh, you've been to England before?
MR. ZHANG: Yes I went there last year. I had the time of my life , although it took a few days to adjust. The two cultures are so different.
MS. PHILLIPS: Well, this is my first visit to China. And I've heard this temple is amazing. When was it built?
MR. ZHANG: Pretty recently. About 150 years ago.
MS. PHILLIPS: Well that seems very old to me.
MR. ZHANG: Considering China's 5000 year history it's relatively new!
MS. PHILLIPS: Do you go to that temple?
MR. ZHANG: No, but my parents do.
MS. PHILLIPS: To pray ?
MR. ZHANG: No. Nowadays people just come to pray for good luck and money.
MS. PHILLIPS: A similar trend is occurring in the West especially in regard to festivals. Many people still celebrate Christmas, although they might not be churchgoers .
MR. ZHANG: Yes, it's interesting. We should find a taxi and go .

Learn English 72 - Travel
By podEnglish

Focus: Improving Listening Skills
Language: Communication of details

ANNA: Excuse me, I have to leave early.
COLIN: OK. How come?
ANNA: It's my niece. She's at the airport. She's on her way to Japan. She said the travel agent gave her the wrong itinerary. She said she has to make three connections to get to Japan, and it will take two days to fly there.
COLIN: It's gonna take two days? What's the problem?
ANNA: She has to fly to Rome, then Paris, then Singapore and finally Japan.
COLIN: Really? She's going to Paris, and she needs to change planes in Rome and then Singapore?
ANNA: No, it's Rome first and then Paris second.
COLIN: That doesn't make any sense. That's a bad itinerary. Why do you have to go to the airport?
ANNA: She told me she has to pay a $100 fee to change her ticket. She doesn't have any money.
COLIN: It sounds like she didn't prepare very well, doesn't it?
ANNA: No, she didn't. But she is a teenager, and she hasn't traveled before. But unless she changes her ticket before her departure. . . she'll go to Rome, and she won't be able to get a direct flight to Japan.
COLIN: Why not just call the travel agent?
ANNA: It's 6:15. They close at 6:00.
COLIN: Well, hurry up. You don't want to get there after they've made the boarding announcements.

Learn English 70 - Computers
By podEnglish

Focus: Using Computers
Language: Computer- and Internet-related terminology

KRISTEN: Jane, I want to find the weather forecast for tomorrow. What do I need to do?
JANE: First, you need to be connected to the Internet.
KRISTEN: Right. So use the mouse to click on this icon here on the desktop, right?
JANE: Yes, and then wait while the computer dials up.
KRISTEN: Why is it taking so long?
JANE: Because our modem only works at 64k. If you want a faster connection we'll have to upgrade.
KRISTEN: OK. Now I've connected, what do I do next?
JANE: Choose a search engine from your list of favorites and type in some key words.
KRISTEN: How about "weather forecast Chicago"?
JANE: That should do. Now click on 'search'.
KRISTEN: Right. Now I have a menu of different sites.
JANE: Good. Click on the link that seems most helpful.
KRISTEN: Oh, this one's good. It has a satellite map. But looks like it's going to rain.

Learn English 68 - Religion
By podEnglish

ERICA: So what was the most interesting thing you saw on your trip to Asia?
JESSICA: Well, in Thailand I saw a Buddhist temple where thousands of monks actually live.
ERICA: Fascinating, did you get to talk to any of them?
JESSICA: No, they didn't speak English, but I did try sitting and meditating with them.
ERICA: I don't know that much about Eastern philosophy or religion. I was brought up Christian. What about yourself?
JESSICA: Actually, I'm Jewish. But, my parents always taught me to try and respect and understand other religions.
ERICA: I went to Church as a kid, but my parents thought I should choose on my own... what religion to follow when I became a teenager.
JESSICA: That's cool. Sounds like both our parents are pretty liberal about religious beliefs.
ERICA: So did you celebrate holidays like Christmas?
JESSICA: No, not in a spiritual way. But, I do exchange gifts with my friends.
ERICA: I guess for a lot of people Christmas isn't much of a religious holiday anymore, is it?
JESSICA: Well, the world is changing. A lot of traditional customs and practices are altering or disappearing.
ERICA: Do you think religion will cease to be important?
JESSICA: Maybe, but religion plays a big part in so many peoples' lives. Just ask the monks!
