Underscoring a continuing dedication to the traditions of rustic life, even during the latter decades of the century, Dupre concentrated on field workers harvesting hay or tending their flocks of sheep. El Desayuno en la hierba fue presentado por Manet al Salón de París de 1863 con el título de El Baño. El jurado lo rechazó, considerando vencedor el Nacimiento de Venus de Cabanel. Manet pareció inspirarse en una jornada de baño en el Sena para realizar un desnudo en un paisaje. Empleó a su modelo favorita, Victorine Meurent, para la joven desnuda de primer plano, acompañada del escultor holandés Ferdinand Leenhoof. En la zona de la derecha se sitúa Gustave, el hermano del pintor. Al fondo observamos el Sena y otra joven que sale del baño. Victorine ha colocado sus vestidos a la izquierda, junto a una cesta de fruta. Por supuesto resulta chocante el contraste entre la desnudez de la joven y los dos hombres que la acompañan, siendo ésta la gran novedad de la imagen. Un fuerte foco de luz incide directamente sobre el grupo, sin apenas crear sombras, apreciándose aquí la influencia de la estampa japonesa. Al fondo Manet recurre al abocetado que caracteriza sus primeras escenas, quizá para marcar la sensación de profundidad y de aire, como hizo Velázquez, uno de sus pintores favoritos. Manet empleó como modelos en esta obra el Concierto campestre de Tiziano y las escenas galantes de Watteau. Resulta interesante mencionar el excelente dibujo del que siempre hará gala el artista, aprendido en el taller de Couture y en las largas sesiones del Louvre copiando a los clásicos. El Desayuno en la hierba fue presentado por Manet al Salón de París de 1863 con el título de El Baño. El jurado lo rechazó, considerando vencedor el Nacimiento de Venus de Cabanel. Manet pareció inspirarse en una jornada de baño en el Sena para realizar un desnudo en un paisaje. Empleó a su modelo favorita, Victorine Meurent, para la joven desnuda de primer plano, acompañada del escultor holandés Ferdinand Leenhoof. En la zona de la derecha se sitúa Gustave, el hermano del pintor. Al fondo observamos el Sena y otra joven que sale del baño. Victorine ha colocado sus vestidos a la izquierda, junto a una cesta de fruta. Por supuesto resulta chocante el contraste entre la desnudez de la joven y los dos hombres que la acompañan, siendo ésta la gran novedad de la imagen. Un fuerte foco de luz incide directamente sobre el grupo, sin apenas crear sombras, apreciándose aquí la influencia de la estampa japonesa. Al fondo Manet recurre al abocetado que caracteriza sus primeras escenas, quizá para marcar la sensación de profundidad y de aire, como hizo Velázquez, uno de sus pintores favoritos. Manet empleó como modelos en esta obra el Concierto campestre de Tiziano y las escenas galantes de Watteau.
