Total Control Drum Tuition: Beginners - Playing 3/4 By louistotalcontrol www.totalcontroldrumtuition.com In this video we're going to tackle playing in 3/4 instead of the more common 4/4. These exercises are designed to get you counting in odd measures as you play. Counting in 3's can be quite tricky for new drummers. Remember though - we are still playing 4 bars worth of drum patterns. The first pattern starts off very simple. Sing '1 2 3 1 2 3' to help you get used to the rhythm. The hand playing the cymbal keeps time. The bass drum falls on '1' whilst the snare falls on '2' and '3'. Told you it was simple! I then progress to add a simple (but deceptively fast) fill-in starting on the 4th bar of the pattern. These are simply 16th notes going round the kit. The next pattern introduces a different pattern for the snare. Sing '1 and 2 3' to get used to hearing this rhythm . Again, I add a simple fill-in to spice up the 3/4 groove. You can play it with alternating hands, or R L L with the hands (which makes it more rudimentary.) The pattern slowly evolves into a more jazzy pattern. The very last groove I play features a great swing-type ostinato played by the cymbal hand. Be careful with this one because adding all the bass drum notes can be hard work. The rhythm should be counted '1 and 2 and 3' and giving it a 'swung' feel really adds character to the pattern. Enjoy, and experiment with your own fill-ins.
