El hallazgo lo publicarán en The Astrophysical Journal un equipo de astrónomos liderados desde el Centro Harvard Smithsonian de Astrofísica (EEUU). "Es un planeta que no se parece en nada a los conocidos, que presenta una proporción enorme de su masa compuesta de agua", explica Zachory Berta, del Centro Harvard Smithsonian de Astrofísica (CfA, EEUU), para referirse al exoplaneta GJ 1214b. Se trata de un 'mundo de agua' (waterworld en inglés) localizado a unos 40 años luz de la Tierra en dirección a la constelación de Ofiuco. Un equipo de astrónomos del CfA -encabezado por el investigador David Carbonneau-, lo descubrió en 2009, pero ahora las observaciones del telescopio espacial Hubble de la NASA han permitido confirmar que se trata de una nueva clase de planeta extrasolar. El estudio ha sido aceptado para su publicación en The Astrophysical Journal. El diámetro de GJ 1214b es aproximadamente 2,7 veces más grande que el de la Tierra y su peso, unas siete veces mayor. El planeta, más pequeño que Urano, orbita a unos dos millones de kilómetros de una estrella enana roja cada 38 horas y se calcula que la temperatura en su superficie es de unos 230 ºC. Los investigadores han utilizado la cámara de campo ancho 3 del Hubble para estudiar el exoplaneta cuando cruzaba por delante de su estrella. Durante ese tránsito la luz de la estrella se filtra a través de la atmósfera planetaria, lo que proporciona información acerca de la mezcla de gases que la forman. "Usamos el Hubble para medir el color infrarrojo del atardecer en ese mundo", aclara Berta. Las brumas son más transparentes a la luz infrarroja que a la luz visible, de modo que los datos del telescopio ayudan a determinar la diferencia entre una atmósfera brumosa de otra vaporosa, como la del nuevo 'mundo de agua'. Las observaciones mostraron que el espectro del GJ 1214b no tiene rasgos diferenciados en una amplia gama de longitudes de onda o colores. El modelo atmosférico se corresponde con otros datos del Hubble que apuntaban a la presencia de una densa atmósfera de vapor de agua. A partir de la masa y el tamaño del planeta, los astrónomos pueden calcular su densidad, que es de apenas dos gramos por centímetro cúbico. [View \| Download]	Alien Abduction Caught On Tape In December 2010, UK UFO website 'Cosmic Conspiracies' was contacted by a lady who claimed she had been abducted by aliens. But what was even more incredible was that she had footage to prove it. This video has been uploaded to You Tube with the full approval of 'Sonia'. Originally it was just hosted on our website, but due to people ripping off the video and posting it here anyway, the decision was taken that it would be better to host the video here on our official channel, instead of some 3rd party trying to steal it. We were the FIRST investigators of this story (despite some people claiming otherwise.) We were contacted just 24 hours after this footage was taken. Unfortunately, during the weeks after our investigation started, our email went down and we couldn't contact the witness for a few days - in the meantime a few scrupulous people got involved with the case and have threatened to both run the story in a UK UFO Magazine and also talk about the case at a UFO lecture later in 2011. We are not connected with any of these individuals and distance ourselves from their actions to make money from this footage - we are here to support the witness and find answers to what the footage appears to show! The story starts with a sighting of a black helicopter who's occupants were similar to 'Men in Black.' A few days later, the lady spotted a UFO hovering over the same field. That night she believes she was abducted and was so afraid after the event that her husband decided to install a CCTV camera into the bedroom to reassure her that nothing else was going to happen. However, a few nights later and the lady thought she had been 'taken' again. On reviewing the tape she saw something that would change her life forever! This is genuine film taken at the time of an alien abduction. The Cosmic Conspiracies research team conducted a 3 hour interview with the lady and her family and believe that this footage and her encounter is real. Despite using many types of software to try and convert the VVF footage to PC (such as VX4SL) we have so far had no luck. We have tried every suggested software that viewers have sent in, but still we cannot convert the original footage. UPDATE - MAY 2012 - The US Syfy TV series 'Fact or Faked' conducted their own investigation into this case. They visited the house and interviewed 'Sonia'. The footage was analysed by an FBI agent who believes that the film is genuine and has not been tampered with. The investigation team tried to recreate the events in the footage by using a hydraulic lift under the bed, an air compressor and also putting a person in the bed who tried to roll out of the bed unnoticed. THEIR VERDICT WAS THAT THE FOOTAGE IS GENUINE AND THE WITNESS IS CREDIBLE - THEY LEFT THE CASE OPEN! [View \| Download]	Voyager In 1977, NASA launched two small spacecraft called Voyager 1 and Voyager 2. Weighing only 800 kgs each, they collected a wealth of scientific data and thousands of photographs of the four giant planets in our Solar System. After visiting Jupiter and Saturn, Voyager 1's trajectory left the ecliptic plane in order to photograph Saturn's moon Titan. This meant that Voyager 1 would not visit any other planets. However, Voyager 2 continued on to visit Uranus and Neptune. Still today, Voyager 2 is the only spacecraft to have visited these two "ice giants" and their moons. [View \| Download]	Supermassive Black Hole in the Milky Way Galaxy Watch this and other space videos at http://SpaceRip.com From a distance, our galaxy would look like a flat spiral, some 100,000 light years across, with pockets of gas, clouds of dust, and about 400 billion stars rotating around the galaxys center. Thick dust and blinding starlight have long obscured our vision into the mysterious inner regions of the galactic center. And yet, the clues have been piling up, that something important, something strange is going on in there. Astronomers tracking stars in the center of the galaxy have found the best proof to date that black holes exist. Now, they are shooting for the first direct image of a black hole. From a distance, our galaxy would look something like this. A flat spiral, some 100,000 light years across, with pockets of gas, clouds of dust, and about 400 billion stars rotating around the galaxy's center. That center -- bulging up and out of the galactic disk -- is tightly packed with stars. Thick dust and blinding starlight have long obscured our vision into the mysterious inner regions of this so-called "bulge." And yet, the clues have been piling up, that something important...something strange... is going on in there. The first to take notice was the physicist Karl Jansky back in the 1930s. He was asked by his employer, Bell Telephone Labs, to investigate sources of static that might interfere with what it saw as the killer app of its time... radio voice transmissions. Using this ungainly radio receiver... Jansky methodically scanned the airwaves. He documented thunderstorms, near and far... and another signal he could not explain. It sounded like steam -- a hiss of radio noise. Jansky narrowed it to a spot in the constellation of Sagittarius, in the direction of the center of the galaxy. Located within a larger pattern of radio emissions... ... Jansky's sighting would become known as Sagittarius A. The word of Jansky's finding got out. He assured the public that it was not aliens seeking contact. But that's just about all anyone could say... for over three decades. Then Erik Becklin got on the case. Becklin is one of those rare researchers whose curiosity and determination push our understanding to a whole new level. It was the 1960's and astronomy, like society, was in a period of ferment. Startling new observations were being made... and new interpretations were in the air. Quasars had just been discovered... extremely bright beacons of light from deep space. Were they coming from the centers of distant galaxies? And what powerful objects were generating them? To study an event at the center of a galaxy, you have locate it. Young Becklin first took aim at our neighboring galaxy, Andromeda. In ultraviolet light, you can see a dense glow in the middle. Becklin found the point where the light reaches peak intensity... and marked it as the Center. From our orientation in space, all of the Andromeda galaxy is in full view. But our galaxy is a different story. We live inside it, of course. Becklin had to find a way to see through all the dust and gas that obscure our line of sight into the center. So he went to a military contractor... ...and obtained a device that reads infrared light... whose wavelengths are similar to the distances between particles in a dust cloud, allowing them to move right through. Becklin began measuring the brightness of the light as it rose to a peak... marking the location of the galactic center. Pinpointing this site would now allow astronomers to begin probing for details with a new generation of powerful telescopes... to peer into the bright lights... the forbidden zones... deep in the heart of the Milky Way. Becklin wasn't the only astronomer interested in the galactic center. Reinhardt Genzel, and a team based at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Germany, began a similar campaign in 1990... from the New Technology Telescope in the mountains of Chile. A few years later, in 1993, high atop Hawaii's Mauna Kea volcano... Eric Becklin and colleagues, including Andrea Ghez, began using the newly christened Keck Telescope. The American and German groups shared the same goal... to pinpoint the precise location of Sagittarius A, and find out what it is. Because the object is too small to see... at 26,000 light years away... they would study it by tracking the orbits of stars around it. Even seeing them would take the sensitivity of Keck's wide aperture; an instrument powerful enough to detect a single candle flame at the distance of the moon... Meanwhile, using a similar technique, astronomers had focused the new Hubble Space Telescope on a different galaxy... a giant elliptical cloud of nearly a billion stars, lying some 50 million light years away called M87. [View \| Download]	STS-107 Space Shuttle Columbia This is a little different and is dedicated to the crew of the Space Shuttle Columbia. The seven-member crew died on February 1, 2003 when the shuttle disintegrated during re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere. The cause of the accident was determined to be a piece of foam that broke off during launch and damaged the thermal protection system components (reinforced carbon-carbon panels and thermal protection tiles) on the leading edge of the left wing of the Shuttle orbiter, causing an extensive heat build-up. During re-entry the damaged wing slowly overheated and came apart, eventually leading to loss of control and total disintegration of the vehicle. El hallazgo lo publicarán en The Astrophysical Journal un equipo de astrónomos liderados desde el Centro Harvard Smithsonian de Astrofísica (EEUU). "Es un planeta que no se parece en nada a los conocidos, que presenta una proporción enorme de su masa compuesta de agua", explica Zachory Berta, del Centro Harvard Smithsonian de Astrofísica (CfA, EEUU), para referirse al exoplaneta GJ 1214b. Se trata de un 'mundo de agua' (waterworld en inglés) localizado a unos 40 años luz de la Tierra en dirección a la constelación de Ofiuco. Un equipo de astrónomos del CfA -encabezado por el investigador David Carbonneau-, lo descubrió en 2009, pero ahora las observaciones del telescopio espacial Hubble de la NASA han permitido confirmar que se trata de una nueva clase de planeta extrasolar. El estudio ha sido aceptado para su publicación en The Astrophysical Journal. El diámetro de GJ 1214b es aproximadamente 2,7 veces más grande que el de la Tierra y su peso, unas siete veces mayor. El planeta, más pequeño que Urano, orbita a unos dos millones de kilómetros de una estrella enana roja cada 38 horas y se calcula que la temperatura en su superficie es de unos 230 ºC. Los investigadores han utilizado la cámara de campo ancho 3 del Hubble para estudiar el exoplaneta cuando cruzaba por delante de su estrella. Durante ese tránsito la luz de la estrella se filtra a través de la atmósfera planetaria, lo que proporciona información acerca de la mezcla de gases que la forman. "Usamos el Hubble para medir el color infrarrojo del atardecer en ese mundo", aclara Berta. Las brumas son más transparentes a la luz infrarroja que a la luz visible, de modo que los datos del telescopio ayudan a determinar la diferencia entre una atmósfera brumosa de otra vaporosa, como la del nuevo 'mundo de agua'. Las observaciones mostraron que el espectro del GJ 1214b no tiene rasgos diferenciados en una amplia gama de longitudes de onda o colores. El modelo atmosférico se corresponde con otros datos del Hubble que apuntaban a la presencia de una densa atmósfera de vapor de agua. A partir de la masa y el tamaño del planeta, los astrónomos pueden calcular su densidad, que es de apenas dos gramos por centímetro cúbico. El agua tiene una densidad de un gramo por centímetro cúbico, en tanto que la densidad promedio de la Tierra es de 5,5 gramos por centímetro cúbico. Esta información lleva a los científicos a la conclusión de que el planeta GJ 1214b tiene mucha más agua y muchas menos rocas que la Tierra, por lo que la estructura interna de ambos planetas debe ser muy diferente. "Las altas temperaturas y elevadas presiones puede formar materiales exóticos como 'hielo caliente' o 'agua superfluida", sustancias que son completamente extrañas a nosotros," afirma Berta. [View \| Download]	Alien Abduction Caught On Tape In December 2010, UK UFO website 'Cosmic Conspiracies' was contacted by a lady who claimed she had been abducted by aliens. But what was even more incredible was that she had footage to prove it. This video has been uploaded to You Tube with the full approval of 'Sonia'. Originally it was just hosted on our website, but due to people ripping off the video and posting it here anyway, the decision was taken that it would be better to host the video here on our official channel, instead of some 3rd party trying to steal it. We were the FIRST investigators of this story (despite some people claiming otherwise.) We were contacted just 24 hours after this footage was taken. Unfortunately, during the weeks after our investigation started, our email went down and we couldn't contact the witness for a few days - in the meantime a few scrupulous people got involved with the case and have threatened to both run the story in a UK UFO Magazine and also talk about the case at a UFO lecture later in 2011. We are not connected with any of these individuals and distance ourselves from their actions to make money from this footage - we are here to support the witness and find answers to what the footage appears to show! The story starts with a sighting of a black helicopter who's occupants were similar to 'Men in Black.' A few days later, the lady spotted a UFO hovering over the same field. That night she believes she was abducted and was so afraid after the event that her husband decided to install a CCTV camera into the bedroom to reassure her that nothing else was going to happen. However, a few nights later and the lady thought she had been 'taken' again. On reviewing the tape she saw something that would change her life forever! This is genuine film taken at the time of an alien abduction. The Cosmic Conspiracies research team conducted a 3 hour interview with the lady and her family and believe that this footage and her encounter is real. Despite using many types of software to try and convert the VVF footage to PC (such as VX4SL) we have so far had no luck. We have tried every suggested software that viewers have sent in, but still we cannot convert the original footage. UPDATE - MAY 2012 - The US Syfy TV series 'Fact or Faked' conducted their own investigation into this case. They visited the house and interviewed 'Sonia'. The footage was analysed by an FBI agent who believes that the film is genuine and has not been tampered with. The investigation team tried to recreate the events in the footage by using a hydraulic lift under the bed, an air compressor and also putting a person in the bed who tried to roll out of the bed unnoticed. THEIR VERDICT WAS THAT THE FOOTAGE IS GENUINE AND THE WITNESS IS CREDIBLE - THEY LEFT THE CASE OPEN! Weighing only 800 kgs each, they collected a wealth of scientific data and thousands of photographs of the four giant planets in our Solar System. After visiting Jupiter and Saturn, Voyager 1's trajectory left the ecliptic plane in order to photograph Saturn's moon Titan. This meant that Voyager 1 would not visit any other planets. However, Voyager 2 continued on to visit Uranus and Neptune. Still today, Voyager 2 is the only spacecraft to have visited these two "ice giants" and their moons. Thick dust and blinding starlight have long obscured our vision into the mysterious inner regions of the galactic center. And yet, the clues have been piling up, that something important, something strange is going on in there. Astronomers tracking stars in the center of the galaxy have found the best proof to date that black holes exist. Now, they are shooting for the first direct image of a black hole. From a distance, our galaxy would look something like this. A flat spiral, some 100,000 light years across, with pockets of gas, clouds of dust, and about 400 billion stars rotating around the galaxy's center. That center -- bulging up and out of the galactic disk -- is tightly packed with stars. Thick dust and blinding starlight have long obscured our vision into the mysterious inner regions of this so-called "bulge." And yet, the clues have been piling up, that something important...something strange... is going on in there. The first to take notice was the physicist Karl Jansky back in the 1930s. He was asked by his employer, Bell Telephone Labs, to investigate sources of static that might interfere with what it saw as the killer app of its time... radio voice transmissions. Using this ungainly radio receiver... Jansky methodically scanned the airwaves. He documented thunderstorms, near and far... and another signal he could not explain. It sounded like steam -- a hiss of radio noise. Jansky narrowed it to a spot in the constellation of Sagittarius, in the direction of the center of the galaxy. Located within a larger pattern of radio emissions... ... Jansky's sighting would become known as Sagittarius A. The word of Jansky's finding got out. He assured the public that it was not aliens seeking contact. But that's just about all anyone could say... for over three decades. Then Erik Becklin got on the case. Becklin is one of those rare researchers whose curiosity and determination push our understanding to a whole new level. It was the 1960's and astronomy, like society, was in a period of ferment. Startling new observations were being made... and new interpretations were in the air. Quasars had just been discovered... extremely bright beacons of light from deep space. Were they coming from the centers of distant galaxies? And what powerful objects were generating them? To study an event at the center of a galaxy, you have locate it. Young Becklin first took aim at our neighboring galaxy, Andromeda. In ultraviolet light, you can see a dense glow in the middle. Becklin found the point where the light reaches peak intensity... and marked it as the Center. From our orientation in space, all of the Andromeda galaxy is in full view. But our galaxy is a different story. We live inside it, of course. Becklin had to find a way to see through all the dust and gas that obscure our line of sight into the center. So he went to a military contractor... ...and obtained a device that reads infrared light... whose wavelengths are similar to the distances between particles in a dust cloud, allowing them to move right through. Becklin began measuring the brightness of the light as it rose to a peak... marking the location of the galactic center. Pinpointing this site would now allow astronomers to begin probing for details with a new generation of powerful telescopes... to peer into the bright lights... the forbidden zones... deep in the heart of the Milky Way. Becklin wasn't the only astronomer interested in the galactic center. Reinhardt Genzel, and a team based at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Germany, began a similar campaign in 1990... from the New Technology Telescope in the mountains of Chile. A few years later, in 1993, high atop Hawaii's Mauna Kea volcano... Eric Becklin and colleagues, including Andrea Ghez, began using the newly christened Keck Telescope. The American and German groups shared the same goal... to pinpoint the precise location of Sagittarius A, and find out what it is. Because the object is too small to see... at 26,000 light years away... they would study it by tracking the orbits of stars around it. Even seeing them would take the sensitivity of Keck's wide aperture; an instrument powerful enough to detect a single candle flame at the distance of the moon... Meanwhile, using a similar technique, astronomers had focused the new Hubble Space Telescope on a different galaxy... a giant elliptical cloud of nearly a billion stars, lying some 50 million light years away called M87. The seven-member crew died on February 1, 2003 when the shuttle disintegrated during re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere. The cause of the accident was determined to be a piece of foam that broke off during launch and damaged the thermal protection system components (reinforced carbon-carbon panels and thermal protection tiles) on the leading edge of the left wing of the Shuttle orbiter, causing an extensive heat build-up. During re-entry the damaged wing slowly overheated and came apart, eventually leading to loss of control and total disintegration of the vehicle. The six crew members are bringing new experiments and hardware to the International Space Station. Also on board is Robonaut 2, the first humanoid robot to fly in space. Discovery's flight marks the retirement of NASA's shuttle fleet. Endeavor and Atlantis are expected to launch later this year.
