Mortal Kombat Gold on Dreamcast By spacedogg Mortal Kombat 4 was the series first game without its trademark 2D digitized graphics. I remember getting a look at the 3D graphics of MK4 for the first time in an issue of EGM and immediately began drooling. I was soo pumped for this new revolutionary Mortal Kombat that I kept checking the local arcade every week to see if they had gotten it yet. When they finally received their shiny new MK4 machine I scrounged up all the loot I had and took my special move list for Sub-Zero, and Scorpion which I had scrawled on a piece of paper and crumpled up in my pocket and played till I was broke (which wasnt very long at all). The polygon graphics and weapons system really turned off some MK purists but I loved the enhancements and I still enjoy playing this game to this day on my Dreamcast. Nintendo's N64 port was the first home version I played and its pretty good in my opinion, fast and no loading times. I purchased the Dreamcast version at a pretty good bargain because it didnt do so well on Segas system. It had the misfortune of launching with the console along with another little fighter called Soul Caliber (my first DC game) which was a revolutionary fully 3D fighter (MK4 is played on a 2D plane) and the MK4 graphics paled in comparison. Not to mention that they had to re-release the game (kinda) because so many bugs were left in, probably in a rush to make the DC launch date. And by the way if youre in the market for your own copy of Mortal Kombat Gold (which is the official Dreamcast name) make sure the copy your buying has a red topside on the CD itself (the original buggy one is gold) and a green sticker on the cover saying Hot! New, that is the re-released version with most of the bugs fixed. I feel it plays a lot like Ultimate 3 with fast easy combos and a run button. If youre an MK fan like me and havent tried this game (and own a Dreamcast), do yourself a favor and pick up a copy on the cheap (very cheap).
