She also sang solitary, mostly wedding, songs. She was born to a middle class family in 1937. Her parents were of Kashmiri origin from Lahore. Her father, Khwaja Nazeer Ahmed, worked for the municipal corporation as a registered contractor at the time of her birth. Education Despite their meager resources, Musarrats parents wanted her to be a doctor. They provided her the best possible education they could afford. Musarrat passed the matriculation examination with distinction. Two years later, she passed the intermediate examination from Kennard College, Punjab, Pakistan. Film Career She had keen interest in music and began singing for radio Pakistan. However, insufficient money from the radio took her to the film director, Anwar Kamal Pasha. She explained to Pasha about her strong desire to sing for the movies. Instead, Pasha suggested her to become an actress. Musarrat needed her parents approval. Pasha himself met Musarrats father and convinced him to allow his daughter to work in movie industry as a singer and actress. Pasha changed Musarrats name to Chandni and signed her for a side role in his movie. Hence, Chandni made her debut with Nayyar Sultana in Pashas film Qatil in 1955. Her role was secondary but forceful. Sheikh Lateef of capital films Lahore planned to make a Punjabi film. Lateefs friend, poet and script writer, Baba Aalam sia poash, advised him to cast Chandni(Musarrat) in the film. Sheikh Lateef agreed. This was the debut of Musarrat in Punjabi films, with a nick name Chandni. And then Chandni appeared in the hit Punjabi film, Patan, with her real name, Musarrat Nazeer. She played the lead role opposite Santosh Kumar also. The producer was Sheikh Lateef and the film was directed by Luqman. The film Patan opened the doors for Musarrat in the Punjabi film industry, which led her to the all time hit film Paatay Khan. She was the supporting actress. The film was Produced by Shami and Musarrat Nazeer acted along with Noor Jehan and Aslam Pervez. Comanding Respect In her entire movie career, she has always been respected and she herself believes in giving respect to others. She says Give respect, get respect. Films Musarrat also gave performances in Pakistan cinemas greatest melodramas like the films Maahi munda and Yakkay wali. It is said, the films Yaar beli, Kartaar Singh and Zeher-e-Ishq were so interesting and emotional that they left audience with tears in their eyes. The song "Us bay wafa ka sheher hai" in the mega- hit film "Shaheed", is considered to be the most popular song till today. Popular Songs One of Musarrat's greatest achievements are the songs listed below: "Mera long gawaacha" "Chalay to cut he jaaye ga safar Aahista, Aahista", "Apnay haatoan ki lakiroan mein". Best Actress Awards Nigar Award for best actress in 1958, for the film Zeher-e-Ishq. Nigar Award for best actress in 1959, for the film Jhoomar. Nigar Award for best actress in 1961, for the film Shaheed. Personal Life Musarrat married cardiologist, Dr. Arshad Majeed and both of them settled in Canada in the mid 1970s. Dr. Arshads father, Sheikh Majeed, is an entrepreneur and owns Lala Zaar cinema, Sialkot. Musarrat, who is 71 years of age, and in an excellent health, lives with her husband and daughter in Toronto Canada. Moreover, she in her real life is known to be very friendly and humorous, cracking jokes frequently. Musarrat sang for quite some time. She retired from the cinema years ago. However, she continued singing for the Pakistan television(Ptv) up until recently. Hailing from famous Patiala Gharana, Asad was son of famous musician Amanat Ali Khan. Asad Amanat Ali Khan died relatively young of heart attack on April 8, 2007 in London. Family His great-grandfather, Ali Baksh Khan, was the founder of the Patiala Gharana. His grandfather, Akhtar Hussain, was a prominent musician of his time who added to his repute by coaching two of his sons into becoming a formidable singing duo(Amanat Ali Khan and Hamid Ali Khan). Amanat Ali Khan, Asad's father, died in 1974. Asad's younger brother Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan is a popular pop singer and he is the lead singer of band Fuzon. Singing career When he was 10 years old Asad recorded his first song, which featured on his grandfather's debut album. He had also been interested in academics and often said if not a singer, he would love to be a pilot. He joined a private institution however and began singing professionally after completing his F.A. He started his musical career performing "Thumri" and then went on to record some of his most popular Punjabi numbers and Ghazals, such as "Umra Lagian", "Zara Zara", "Kal Chaudwin Ki Raat", and "Ghar Wapas Jab". One of the songs that featured in almost every concert he performed, arguably his biggest hit, was "Insha Ji Utho" (Originally sung by his father). Asad worked for Pakistan Television for several years. Nisar Bazmi, composer and PTV producer, who died one week before him, gave him his first break, introducing the artist to the world on live television. He retained his affiliation with television through the years, recording over 1,000 songs. Asad also contributed to the Pakistani film industry, featuring on a number of soundtracks. Moreover, he caught the attention of neighboring Bollywood and contributed to soundtracks there too. Asad also sang as a member of singing duo with his uncle Hamid Ali Khan. Asad owed much of his early recognition to his late father's famous numbers. Quite often his concert would round off with "Insha'a Jee utho, abb cooch karo" (Get up O Insha! It's time to leave the world) — a song that finds another ironic reference in Asad's death. Ibn-e-Insha who wrote it, Amanat Ali and Asad Amanat who sang it — all died relatively young. Other than music and the family name, Asad inherited from his father a passion to act in films. But the affair was cut short after an unsuccessful attempt. Asad Amanat Ali was also famed for his "soz-o-salam" recitations in Urdu describing the events of Karbala during Ashura in Muharram, and appeared on many radio and television specials about Karbala over the years before his death. Awards Like his father, Asad was given the president's award for Pride of Performance. The government of Pakistan acknowledged Asad Amanat Ali Khan's immense contribution to Pakistani music by awarding him the Pride of Performance on March 23, 2007 (2 weeks before his death). Death He had visited London in January and was receiving treatment for a condition known as Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. He returned to Pakistan however during his treatment to receive the President's award of Pride of Performance. After receiving the award he had left Pakistan on April 3, 2007 for medical consultation, and while in England, on April 8, 2007 died in Cassiobury Park in London whilst enjoying an outing with the family. He had fallen to the ground and many attempts were made to revive him however, he had died instantaneously. His medical tests were scheduled for the following week but he never got a chance to continue his treatment. His body was brought back to his home country Pakistan for the burial. He was buried in Mominpura Graveyard Lahore. Tufail Niazi belonged to the Kapurthala music tradition and to the lineage of Saeen Ilyas. He became an internationally renowned musician and is a great name in Punjabi folk music. Tufail Niazi had a unique edge over other legendary folk singers due to his mastery over the compositions nested in classical tradition. Often he instilled new and different meanings into common verses. Tufail Niazi also had the honour of being the first person to appear on PTV on its inauguration day. He was born to a family of music lovers. He received his early training in classic singing from his father, who played the dhurpadi mardang (a form of drum). He made his first public appearance as a singer when he was only eight years old. Before Independence, he used to sing at the famous Harbalb Mela (festival) near Jullander, where the top Indian singers used to perform. After Independence, he migrated to Multan, where he began selling milk and curd until 1949, when a police inspector recognized him and arranged for him to sing at a concert. He soon became well known in the cultural circles of Multan, where he established a theatre and became a popular actor, singing on occasion for Radio Pakistan and performing on television when it was introduced. Tufail Naizi, skilled in the art of classical music, excelled in aarr (singing between the beats) and adhob (amalgamating the notes of two or three ragas). He worked tirelessly to help set up the National Institute of Folk Heritage, travelling all over Pakistan to gather folk treasures. A winner of the Presidents Pride of Performance award, he died on September 21, 1990.
