Three worlds meet in this story: the noble world of three Athens couples, a common popular world of tradesmen amateur theatre and a fairy-tale happiness of magic creatures as elves and nymphs. The film is considered the most remarkable Trnka's work and a milestone in the history of animation. Awards: The highest prize of the technical committee - Cannes 1959, Honourable medal - Venice 1959, First prize for the best film - Bucharest 1960, Second prize - Montevideo 1960, First prize - "Golden Mercury" - for music - Valencia 1962 The celebrated Czech animator Jiri Trnka started work on a non‐verbal CinemaScope puppet version (Czechoslovakia, 1958). Shakespeare's dialogue was cut out completely, except for the occasional few words of plot explanation. In place of dialogue Trnka relied on visual richness and inventiveness to convey character. Puck, for example, shows his impish humour in the way he transforms himself into little animals from time to time; and Oberon's moods are implied by a succession of costume changes. A twist not found in Shakespeare is that in the final scene, when the artisans are performing their play before Theseus and the court, Puck uses magic to transform their acting from silly to sublime for a few brief moments. Yūko says that since Watanuki was the one who brought the client to her, he should be the one to grant her wish and therefore is brought along with her and Domeki. Yūko also attends because she has been invited to the mansion with many other famous collectors by the same letter, with the mansion filled with strange rooms and mysterious letters telling its guests what to do in place of a host. Though the collectors come to the the theory of a mysterious auction being held, as in some urban legends, it becomes apparent that something more sinister and mysterious is going on as the collectors begin to disappear and a number of other strange occurrences happen.
