Elize - Lovesick (High Quality) By VideoHighQuality Laissée pour morte (musicalement...) après le sérieux échec d'In Control, Elize tente un retour avec More Than Meets The Eye, son deuxième album. Sorti il y a deux semaines mais bloqué hors du top 100, le disque est promis au même sort que son grand frère. Elize et Spinnin' Records ont redoublé d'effort pour fournir un cd de qualité mais semblent plus fainéants lorsqu'il s'agit de le promouvoir. Tout ça sent soit la fin de contrat, soit le timing mal ordonné, une erreur qui avait déjà couté cher au précédent album. Pourtant entre lui et le nouveau, n'est pas le moins connu le plus mauvais. Loin de là même. Sur More Than Meets The Eye c'est un grand bond en avant par rapport à In Control. L'hollandaise a pris de l'assurance, jusque dans la voix, c'est clairement l'impression qu'on a eu. Dès la première écoute, les probables tubes s'additionnent et Elize se place en rivale des nouvelles divas dance comme Agnes. La première qualité de cet opus est celle qui faisait défaut au premier : la diversité. Pas de Shake bis à tout-va, les producteurs ont donné à la miss substance pour travailler. Et même si la pop-dance se retrouve à la pelle, c'est beaucoup moins cheap que par le passé. Can't You Feel It, pastiche d'Automatic (son plus gros tube) est le plus admirable du lot, ce qui lui vaut d'être notre grand favori, mais pas celui du public hollandais chez qui le single a été mal reçu. Le son répété façon Tétris sur le refrain et les couplets progressifs nous rendent fous. Au coude à coude Get Up (Do It Now), prochain single (celui sensé sauver l'album) et Hook You Up révèle une facette toujours connue d'Elize et sous son meilleur jour. De l'eurodance comme on en fait plus, ou faisait plutôt, étant donner le soudain regain d'intérêt pour ce genre. Plusieurs autres chansons se disputent ensuite la troisième marche, dont Let's Give Love A Try qui évoque instantanément chez moi September et le génial Until I Die. Coupables entre autres, les sons de cloche ! Lovesick n'inspire guère plus qu'un sentiment de déjà entendu. Pas très astucieux ce choix de premier single, et ça n'est pas un numéro un en Bulgarie qui la sauvera. Sur Hot Stuff, Elize se frotte au classique disco et propose une adaptation sans mettre de côté les atouts de l'originale. La brune incendiaire joue la carte sexy et ça paye, sans surprendre. Le hic quand on se risque à une reprise. Heureusement niveau reprise, elle se rattrape avec Shine Like A Superstar (d'une chanteuse lettone) sur lequel Ophelie Winter avait déjà posé ses pattes (et ses vibes vocodées) mais qui offre à Elize le mid-tempo dance qui manquait à sa carrière. D'autre part, et c'est ce qui fait la variété de More Than Meets The Eye, la chanteuse prend son pied sur des morceaux pop sans once d'électro. Du plus ridicule First Class Liar et son tempo latino stéréotypé piquée à Lorie (ou même directement sur I'm No Latino, titre de la demoiselle) au plus convaincant Mr Know It All - aussi sur le plan vocal, car oui Elize s'efforce à bien chanter si nécessaire. Elle en a largement les capacités. On n'a pas d'ailleurs pas su déterminer qui d'entre lui ou Can't You Feel it était le passage fort de l'album. Du moins en attendant qu'I Can Be a Bitch prenne l'ascendant. Cette copie éhontée mais efficace de Britney (en particulier Womanizer) confirme l'image sulfureuse que j'aime bien lui prêter. Elize a quand même commencé sa carrière à douze ans avec "la chanson des seins" ! Pour terminer, vous finirez bien par reprendre un bout d'Automatic, cette fois à la sauce acoustique. Le résultat est stupéfiant, harmonieux et même sous ce format on parie un bras que ça deviendrait un hit. Conclusion, In Control le brouillon s'en va et nous laissons sans regret More Than Meets The Eye prendre sa place. Un disque sorti avec, peut-être, quelques années de retard, mais c'est aussi ce qui fait le charme de l'artiste et de sa musique, éviter les tendances actuelles et prendre le risque d'un revers avec des tubes démodées mais captivants.
