Dans l'Angleterre du 13e siècle, Robin et ses compagnons s'insurgent contre la corruption locale et fomentent un soulèvement contre le trône qui affectera pour toujours l'équilibre du pouvoir universel : brigand pour les uns, héros pour les autres, un homme d'origine modeste va devenir le symbole inaltérable de la libération des opprimés. ROBIN DES BOIS raconte l'étonnant destin d'un archer du roi : mettant sa dextérité au service de l'armée, il lutte contre l'envahisseur français ne semblant alors motivé que par son seul instinct de survie. À la mort de son souverain, Richard Coeur de Lion, Robin se rend à Nottingham, une ville rongée par la corruption et sous le joug d'un shérif de comté despotique qui asservit ses sujets à grands coups d'impôts et de taxes. Là, il s'éprend de la fougueuse Lady Marianne (Cate Blanchett, récompensée aux Oscars), mais celle-ci doute des motivations et de l'identité de ce croisé venu des bois. Espérant gagner le coeur de la belle et affranchir les assujettis du comté, Robin réunit une horde de mercenaires dont les prouesses de combat n'ont dégal que le goût pour les plaisirs de la vie. Ensemble, ils commencent à s'en prendre à l'aristocratie complaisante, résolus à corriger les injustices perpétrées par le shérif. Dans un pays affaibli par des décennies de guerre, aux prises avec l'inaptitude à gouverner du nouveau monarque et vulnérable aux menaces extérieures comme aux troubles internes, Robin et ses hommes sont entraînés dans une aventure d'une nouvelle ampleur : le plus improbable des héros et ses alliés se lancent à la défense de leur peuple menacé par une sanglante guerre civile et s'emploient à redorer, une fois encore, le blason de l'Angleterre.
