La ciudad medieval generalmente está rodeada por una muralla defensiva, en la que varias puertas abren a los caminos más importantes. El trazado urbano es sinuoso e irregular, existiendo a veces zonas despobladas. Las ciudades tienen diferentes barrios, que agrupan a la población en función de su procedencia, su religión o su actividad. El desarrollo económico de algunas urbes, especialmente las dedicadas al comercio, hizo que se construyeran nuevas áreas. En éstas, las viviendas podían alcanzar dos o tres plantas. El centro de la vida urbana lo ocupa la plaza, en la que se sitúan los edificios más representativos. Estos son altos, realizados en piedra, con balcones que se abren a la calle. Un escudo, también en piedra, indica que sus portadores pertenecen a un noble linaje. De la plaza parte un sinfín de calles, algunas estrechas y tortuosas, siempre ocupadas por una intensa actividad. En ellas se desarrollaba buena parte de la vida diaria de la comunidad: comprar, vender, pasear, relacionarse... Sin duda, el mercado era el centro económico y social de la población. Las casas de los artesanos servían al mismo tiempo como taller y tienda, por lo que se abrían al exterior. Además, muchas viviendas podían contar con un solar en su parte posterior, que era utilizado como huerto y en el cual podía existir un pozo. Edificato nel sec. X detto periodo di incastellamento, il documento più antico riferentesi a Stroncone contenuto nel Chronicon Farfense di Gregorio da Catino, risale al 1012. Stroncone ha consevato nei secoli le sue antiche e suggestive caratteristiche: stradine strette e tortuose, bellissimi portali in pietra, l'antico pozzo subito dentro le mura, le scalinate e le arcate che dividono i caseggiati austeri. Nel 2007 è stato inserito nella lista dei "borghi più belli d'Italia" .
