Part 6: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=CGetCES... Runtime: 00:59:03 Particle physicist Professor Brian Cox asks, 'What time is it?' It's a simple question which sounds like it has a simple answer, but do we really know what it is that we're asking? In this intriguing documentary from the BBC's 'Horizon', Prof Cox visits the ancient Mayan pyramids in Mexico, where the Maya built temples to time. He discovers that a day is never 24 hours, and meets Earth's very own Director of Time. He journeys to the beginning of time, goes beyond it within the realms of string theory, and explores the very limit of time. He learns that we not only travel through time at the speed of light, but the experience we feel as the passing of time could be an illusion. You will never see time in the same light again! Visualization of the Coriolis and centrifugal forces By udiprod This clip demonstrates the effects of the Coriolis and Centrifugal forces, by viewing various scenes from both rotating and stationary cameras. (The Coriolis force is also known as the Coriolis effect). Please contact me if you would like a stand-alone high-quality wmv file for academic purposes. The first example shows a cannon fixed to a rotating disc. The cannonballs fly in straight lines since once shot no force acts on them. When this scene is viewed from the disc's frame of reference (i.e., as would be seen by a viewer that stands on the disc) the cannonballs seem to fly in a curved path. This demonstrates that in a rotating frame of reference one must take into account the Coriolis and Centrifugal forces. (Read more about them in Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centrifu..., http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coriolis... The second example shows a pendulum swinging over a rotating disc. A pendulum swinging through a small angle approximates what is called "harmonic motion" in which the ball is pulled to the center by a force proportional to its distance to the center. In the pendulum, the string exerts a force whose vertical component balances gravity and the horizontal component (shown in the clip) causes the harmonic motion (approximately). The disc and the pendulum has the same period, meaning both complete a cycle at the same time. When viewed from the disc's frame of reference the centrifugal and Coriolis forces appear yet again. This time the centrifugal force balances the string's horizontal component. This is because the centrifugal force is also proportional to the distance from the center but pushing outward instead of inward. The equal periods make the factor of proportion the same for both. This leaves the Coriolis force alone to act on the ball. Since it is always perpendicular to the object's path, this creates a perfectly circular path. Finally, we decrease the pendulum's period to be 2/3 of the disc's period. Now the centrifugal force no longer balances that of the string and the motion becomes more complicated. The Elegant Universe: Einstein's Dream String Theory Clip By mayushkar Modern physics is composed of two theories that are ferociously incompatible—reached its schizophrenic impasse: one theory, known as general relativity, is fantastically successful in describing big things like stars and galaxies, and another, called quantum mechanics, is equally successful in describing small things like atoms and subatomic particles. Albert Einstein, the inventor of general relativity, dreamed of finding a single theory that would embrace all of nature's laws. But in this quest for the so-called unified theory, Einstein came up empty-handed, and the conflict between general relativity and quantum mechanics has stymied all who've followed. That is, until the discovery of string theory. The Elegant Universe: Welcome to the 11th Dimension Clip By mayushkar In 1995 Edward Witten of Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study revolutionized string theory by successfully uniting the five different versions into a single theory that is cryptically named "M-theory," a development which required a total of eleven dimensions. The new eleventh dimension is different from all the others, since it implies that strings can come in higher dimensional shapes called membranes. These have truly science-fiction-like qualities, since in principle they can be as large as the universe. A brane can even be a universe—a parallel universe—and we may be living on one right now. The theory is so far ahead of experimental technique that there is as yet no way to verify whether strings are real or a figment of some very creative imaginations. But scientists at the CERN atom-smasher on the French-Swiss border are working to test of one of the predictions of string theory. Scheduled to run later in this decade, this experiment may take an important step in showing that string theory is not just a crazy idea. Philip Bailey & Phil Collins - Easy Lover (Remastered Edit) By thebunyipfarm For stereo playback go to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9xY_c... © Columbia/CBS 1984/1985 "Easy Lover" is a song written by Philip Bailey, Phil Collins, and Nathan East, and accredited to both singers Bailey and Collins when released as a single. The song appeared on Bailey's solo album Chinese Wall. Collins has also performed the song in his live shows and it appears on his 1990 album Serious Hits... Live!, as well as his 1998 compilation album, ...Hits. The song was a smash hit in the UK, reaching #1 and staying there for four weeks and also reaching #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. However, it was never released as a single in Australia due to the fact that the record companies considered it would be a commercial over-flood of Phil Collins given his then rising popularity in that country. The lighthearted video for the song was filmed in London and features Bailey travelling by helicopter to meet Collins in a television studio. The original clip was also littered with frequent voice over's frequent dropping in & out of audio volume. This (like many other clips of it's time) was of particular concern to resident VJ's wanting to use this classic as part of their repertoire thus with the use of modern technology we were able to provide them with such. The song was used as a theme song to the inaugural WrestleMania in 1985. The song also featured in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories as part of its soundtrack in the fictional pop radio station, Flash FM. The song was also used in the TV advertisements for the game in the United States and the United Kingdom. In 1994 it was sampled by Chris Morris for "Uzi Lover", a parody of gangsta rap (with Morris portraying its fictitious performer "Fur-Q") in an episode of The Day Today. The song was also covered by R&B/Gospel singer, Cheryl Gamble of SWV in 2001. For more information about Philip & Phil visit: http://www.philipbailey.com/ http://www.philcollins.co.uk/ * Note: It has been commented upon that this unique version may have been sped up. We would like to point out that this is not the case and to prove the point we recently beat analysed this version as well as the original "voice over version" ripped from Phil Collin's Farewell concert DVD (both registering in at exactly 134 BPM). However, the possible reason for most people's misconception is the fact that the actual original album (audio only) version is actually slightly slower (registering at 129 BPM). Thus there in lies the solution, as one would assume that the album/single version is the one the majority of people would be familiar with. And if it is of such deep seeded concern for people we could always upload a slowed down version of the video. * Please also note that all videos uploaded to YouTube are format shifted by the host website from the original files. This can often cause picture & sound deterioration (i.e. mono audio) as well as the occasional video/audio synchronization issue. The files are also deliberately layered with logos &/or promotions on our end, in order to help prevent YouTube recycling by lazy up-loaders who like to take credit for other peoples hard work! World's smallest pistol. Austria 2mm pinfire miniature guns. By pinfirecollector Originally made by Austrian watchmakers as decorative pocket watch chain fobs or as cufflinks, these miniature pinfire pistols are now prized collector's items. These are some from my own collection dating from 1904 to the 1970's. All of them fire 2mm blank pinfire cartridges. The revolvers are the world's smallest working double action blank firing pistols. They measure just 38mm in length and are smaller than the famous Swiss Mini Gun which measures 55mm.
