El film es un retrato satirico de la sociedad consumista norte americana que se consolida durante esta época (años 50) y critíca tambien el Macarthismo"* por el cual el mismo Chaplin se vio afectado y obligado a recurrir al exilio, razon por la que este film fue rodado en Londres. El Macarthismo fue el acoso y persecución a las personas que pudieran o parecieran estar relacionadas con cualquier forma del socialismo que se estaba dando por aquel entonces en Estados Unidos. Una respuesta a la fobia norte americana por el Comunismo en un momento de gran tension pólitica.
