Known for her astonishing 4 1/2 octave vocal range, Yma Sumac (AKA Ima or Imma Sumack) is from Ichocán, Peru, a town high in the Andes. From an early age she performed in radio and movies and made recordings throughout South America. She came to the United States in the 1940s and performed with a small group of musicians and dancers. When she signed with Capitol Records in 1950 her stage name's spelling was changed to the more exotic "Yma Sumac." An urban legend that she is really "Amy Camus," a nice Jewish girl from Brooklyn, originated in 1951 with a joke among musicians repeated in one of Walter Winchell's gossip columns. She has acted in several films and stage shows, and continued to perform into the 1990s. She lives in Los Angeles and has been contemplating new releases of recordings of her most recent concerts. Nos anos 50, ela era uma das artistas mais famosas da música exótica, e se tornou um sucesso internacional baseado nos méritos de seu enorme alcance vocal que ia acima de três oitavas, o que era comumente aclamado por alcançar 4 oitavas.Biografia Yma Sumac nasceu em 13 de setembro de 1922 ,em Cajamarca, Peru, como Zoila Augusta Empératriz Chávarri del Catillo. Ela adaptou o nome Imma Sumac na América do Sul, antes de ir aos EUA. Tal nome foi baseado no nome de sua mãe, que derivava de Ima Shumaq, que significava "linda flor", e até mesmo "linda garota", como declarou em algumas de suas entrevistas. A primeira aparição de Yma Sumac no rádio foi em 1942, sendo que neste mesmo ano, se casou com o maestro Moisés Vivanco. Yma gravou no mínimo 23 canções da música popular peruana na Argrntina em 1943. Essas gravações foi muito bem recebidas pela Odeon(gravadora que gravou suas primeiras músicas) e teve a participação do grupo de Moisés Vivanco, Compañía Peruana de Arte, um grupo de 46 dançarinos, cantores e músicos de origem indígena. Em 1946, Yma e Vivanco se mudaram para a cidade de Nova York, onde atuaram como o Inca Taky Trio, onde Sumac cantava como soprano , sua prima Cholita Rivero como contralto e também como dançarina e Vivanco no violão.Capacidade Vocal Yma Sumac possuia um enorme alcance vocal que ia acima de 4 oitavas. Na gravação de sua canção Chuncho, ela bate sua nota mais baixa, Bb2, e sua nota mais alta, C#7, possuindo 4,2 oitavas.
