Its Rainin Fish A powerful whirlwind might explain a rain of small fish, but it cannot account for the ones that fell on a village in India. As many as 10 people reported picking up fish that weighed as much as eight pounds that had come crashing down on them. In February, 1861, folks in many areas of Singapore reported a rain of fish following an earthquake. How could the two possibly correlate? Golfers dread gathering clouds and a rain that might ruin their game. But imagine the consternation of several duffers in Bournemouth, England, in 1948 who received a shower of herring. Priests often pray for blessings from above... but fish? In 1966, Father Leonard Bourne was dashing through a downpour across a courtyard in North Sydney, Australia, when a large fish fell from the sky and landed on his shoulder. The priest nearly caught it as it slid down his chest, but it squirmed away, fell to the flooded ground and swam away. These things don't always happen in a heavy rain. In 1989, in Ipswich, Australia, Harold and Degen's front lawn was covered with about 800 "sardines" that rained from above during a light shower. This report is most unusual: In an otherwise clear sky in Chilatchee, Alabama in 1956, a woman and her husband watched as a small dark cloud formed in the sky. [View \| Download]	Kansas Thunderstorms, HD version HD UPDATE: Since I've had 74K views of this video as a low res file uploaded back when youtube didn't accept HD files, I figured it was time to dig out the old premiere pro project and re-render this video for an HD version update. It was a stretch to find all the original files to redo this, but thankfully I archived it in a semi-easy to find location. :) I shot this with my HD camcorder June 10th, 2007 at 1AM. The video is mostly looking Northeast at the radio towers West of Maize, KS. The intense lightening strikes on the towers start at 3:13 into the video. The first few minutes has great thunder claps and cloud to cloud. Make sure you crank up your speakers or listen through headphones! [View \| Download]	Supercell Thunderstorm & Evening Lightning- McCook, NE June 8th, 2007 In early June 2007 Dave Lewison and I flew back out to tornado alley for a quick spot chase and met up with fellow Canadian storm chasers, Mark Robinson & George Kourounis. This was the last day of that chase trip and after parting ways with George and Mark, we encountered a dying supercell thunderstorm near McCook, NE on the evening of June 8th. We followed this storm until after sunset, and were treated to an amazing lightning display just outside the town of McCook. We stayed the night in McCook and then continued back on towards Denver where we hopped our flight back to NYC. Hope you enjoy the video! Equipment used: - Computer: MacBook Pro laptop with Windows installed - Monitor - 24" Asus: We had to replace the standard fluorescent backlight with very large tungsten fixtures to funnel in more light to capture the screen. In addition, we flipped the monitor 180 degrees to eliminate a shadow from the driver board and set the system preferences on the computer to rotate 180 degrees. No special software was used in this process. - Camera: Phantom v640 High Speed Camera at 1920 x 1080, films up to 2700 fps "Why does allrecipes.com in the potato gun sequence appear at once, and not the text first and images second? And why does it appear to render from bottom of the screen to the top?" Chrome sends the rendered page to the video card buffer all at once, which is why allrecipes.com appears at once, and not with the text first and images second. Chrome actually paints the page from top to bottom, but to eliminate a shadow from the driver board, we had to flip the monitor upside down and set the system preferences in Windows to rotate everything 180 degrees, resulting in the page appearing to render from bottom to top. "Why does the top one third of the page appear first on the weather.com page load?" Sometimes only half the buffer gets filled before the video card sends its buffer over to the LCD panel. Chrome Browser vs. Sound: We loaded an artist page from Pandora.com, a streaming internet radio service directly off the web on a 15Mbps internet connection. Chrome Browser vs. Lightning: We used a locally loaded version of weather.com that was legally approved for use in this video (and all the standard website permissions procedures that goes into making videos!) While we had a super fast 15Mbps internet connection in the studio, any live internet connection introduces quite a bit of variability. To run speed tests on page rendering times, saving locally and loading from the local disk can help reduce this variability. J'ai assisté à un phénomène rare à Paris : un orage sec, constitué d'une multitude d'éclairs localisés sur un seul cumulo-nimbus! Pas de pluie donc, pas de grosse chaleur (moins de 20°C), et aucun bruit, pas un tonnerre, pas le moindre grondement. Une oeuvre visuelle merveilleuse, à laquelle j'ai rajouté la célèbre bande-son du film 28 jours plus tard (John Murphy - In the house, In a heartbeat - 28 days after). Sur certaines images, on se croirait presque dans un remake de l'adaptation cinématographique "La guerre des mondes", un vaisseau spatial surgissant de cet amas de nuages compactes et de foudres bariolées. [View \| Download]	Kansas Thunderstorms, HD version HD UPDATE: Since I've had 74K views of this video as a low res file uploaded back when youtube didn't accept HD files, I figured it was time to dig out the old premiere pro project and re-render this video for an HD version update. It was a stretch to find all the original files to redo this, but thankfully I archived it in a semi-easy to find location. :) I shot this with my HD camcorder June 10th, 2007 at 1AM. The video is mostly looking Northeast at the radio towers West of Maize, KS. The intense lightening strikes on the towers start at 3:13 into the video. The first few minutes has great thunder claps and cloud to cloud. Make sure you crank up your speakers or listen through headphones! [View \| Download]	Supercell Thunderstorm & Evening Lightning- McCook, NE June 8th, 2007 In early June 2007 Dave Lewison and I flew back out to tornado alley for a quick spot chase and met up with fellow Canadian storm chasers, Mark Robinson & George Kourounis. This was the last day of that chase trip and after parting ways with George and Mark, we encountered a dying supercell thunderstorm near McCook, NE on the evening of June 8th. We followed this storm until after sunset, and were treated to an amazing lightning display just outside the town of McCook. We stayed the night in McCook and then continued back on towards Denver where we hopped our flight back to NYC. Hope you enjoy the video! By increasing the distance between the electrodes, higher potential differences can be built up. Electrostatic induction - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrostatic_induction - refers to the principle that charges in an object (especially a conductor) redistribute themselves in the presence of nearby charges. Opposite charges are attracted to each other, while similar charges are repelled. Larger charges can be stored by connecting the knobs to Leyden jars which are component parts of the machine. [View \| Download]	Google Chrome Speed Tests These speed tests were filmed at actual web page rendering times. If you're interested in the technical details, read on! Equipment used: - Computer: MacBook Pro laptop with Windows installed - Monitor - 24" Asus: We had to replace the standard fluorescent backlight with very large tungsten fixtures to funnel in more light to capture the screen. In addition, we flipped the monitor 180 degrees to eliminate a shadow from the driver board and set the system preferences on the computer to rotate 180 degrees. No special software was used in this process. - Camera: Phantom v640 High Speed Camera at 1920 x 1080, films up to 2700 fps "Why does allrecipes.com in the potato gun sequence appear at once, and not the text first and images second? And why does it appear to render from bottom of the screen to the top?" Chrome sends the rendered page to the video card buffer all at once, which is why allrecipes.com appears at once, and not with the text first and images second. Chrome actually paints the page from top to bottom, but to eliminate a shadow from the driver board, we had to flip the monitor upside down and set the system preferences in Windows to rotate everything 180 degrees, resulting in the page appearing to render from bottom to top. "Why does the top one third of the page appear first on the weather.com page load?" Sometimes only half the buffer gets filled before the video card sends its buffer over to the LCD panel. This is because Chrome on Windows uses GDI to draw, which does not do v-sync. "The screen wipes are so smooth - how was that achieved?" The screen wipes up in a gradated wipe because LCD pixels take around 10ms to flip and gradually change color. More filming details below: Chrome Browser vs. Potato: We used a version of the web page allrecipes.com that is accessible when logged in. About four hours into the Potato Gun shoot we decided to use a locally loaded version of the web page to enable more precise synchronization with the potato gun. We finally got the shot we were hoping for after 51 takes. Chrome Browser vs. Sound: We loaded an artist page from Pandora.com, a streaming internet radio service directly off the web on a 15Mbps internet connection. Chrome Browser vs. Lightning: We used a locally loaded version of weather.com that was legally approved for use in this video (and all the standard website permissions procedures that goes into making videos!) While we had a super fast 15Mbps internet connection in the studio, any live internet connection introduces quite a bit of variability. To run speed tests on page rendering times, saving locally and loading from the local disk can help reduce this variability. [View \| Download]	Phénomène climatique étrange à Paris / Unusual climatic phenomenon on Paris Paris, le 07 Mai 2009, vers 22h00. J'ai assisté à un phénomène rare à Paris : un orage sec, constitué d'une multitude d'éclairs localisés sur un seul cumulo-nimbus! Pas de pluie donc, pas de grosse chaleur (moins de 20°C), et aucun bruit, pas un tonnerre, pas le moindre grondement. Une oeuvre visuelle merveilleuse, à laquelle j'ai rajouté la célèbre bande-son du film 28 jours plus tard (John Murphy - In the house, In a heartbeat - 28 days after). Sur certaines images, on se croirait presque dans un remake de l'adaptation cinématographique "La guerre des mondes", un vaisseau spatial surgissant de cet amas de nuages compactes et de foudres bariolées. Ils sont parmis nous... ;-) PS : à regarder en HQ. ________________________________________ A video of a dry thunderstorm filmed in Paris in May, 2009. Rare phenomenon here! Everything was silent, no rumbling, no thunder, but a profusion of flashes of lighting from the same group of clouds. It was beautiful! Music by John Murphy, theme song of the movie "28 days after".
