An important idea that Advaitins believe very strongly in is the concept of : Brahma Satya, Jagat Mithya -- the World is an Illusion, Consciousness is the Only Reality. This idea rests on three other concepts namely that of the Atman -- the Self, the Brahman -- the Supreme Consciousness and the elusive concept of Maya -- the Illusion. These three crucial concepts can be summarized as follows1 : Atman - the Self : The entire phenomenal world is bound by time, space and causation and as long as one is confined by these concepts, the experience is limited. Beyond the realms of time and space, there is an absolute and unconditional Reality that has no beginning and no end. That is Atman, the Self. The Self cannot be experienced by the senses. This Self is both within and outside the body. Unlike the body it is beyond death and decay. The Self is the fountainhead of the life force that animates and motivates the mind-body complex. According to Sankara, this Self is the all-pervading, self-illumined Consciousness. Brahman - the Supreme Consciousness : Brahman is the ultimate Truth within and without. Brahman is also all-pervading and self-illumined Consciousness and the relationship of the Brahman to the Self is that of the forest to the tree. The entire universe emanates from Brahman, exists in Brahman and at the time of dissolution returns into Brahman. Stepping beyond the primitive monotheism of the Judeo-Christian philosophy/theology, Sankara asserts that the individual Atman and the universal Brahman are one and the same and the concept of a creator that is distinct from the creation is a cosmic illusion. Maya - the Illusion : The phenomenal universe that can be perceived by the senses is actually an illusion called Maya. This Maya is what causes human beings to perceive worldly phenomena and respond to the environment. Vedanta states that Maya shields the Truth or Brahman from the Self or Atman. The concepts of time and space that veil the face of Truth are aspects of Maya. Because Maya veils the Truth, the individual Atman misconstrues both the world and itself as different from the Truth or Brahman. Bicentenario México 2010 (B) By BicentenarioMexico Con el triunfo de la revolución de Ayutla, se convocó a un nuevo Congreso Constituyente, destinado a elaborar las leyes que regirían la vida del país y de sus instituciones. Conscientes del papel histórico que desempeñaban, los liberales propusieron leyes destinadas a erradicar por completo el orden social heredado de la Colonia. Entre 1855 y 1857, se emitieron las primeras Leyes de Reforma, conocidas por los nombres de los ministros que las impulsaron. - La Ley Juárez estableció la preponderancia del Estado para impatir justicia, excluyendo a los tribunales eclesiásticos y militares en todos los asuntos del orden civil. Así, el Estado se erigía como garante de la paz pública entre unos ciudadanos caracterizados por la igualdad jurídica. - La Ley Lerdo obligaba a las corporaciones civiles y religiosas a vender gran parte de sus casas y haciendas, con el propósito de crear un mayor número de propietarios que generarían riquezas y fuentes de trabajo, lo cual redundaría en beneficio de la hacienda pública. - La Ley Iglesias estableció el carácter gratuito de los servicios religiosos para los pobres, evitando con ello su mortificación y endeudamiento al pagar por la celebración de bautizos, bodas y funerales. Las primeras Leyes de Reforma se promulgaron durante los gobiernos de Juan N. Álvarez e Ignacio Comonfort, quedando incorporadas en la nueva Constitución promulgada el 5 de febrero de 1857. Sin duda, aquella ley contenía preceptos de gran valor y trascendencia; elevó a rango constitucional los derechos del hombre. Al respecto, declaró que todos los mexicanos son libres desde su nacimiento, con pleno derecho a la libertad de enseñanza, de profesión, de conciencia, de petición, de asociación, de desplazamiento en todo el territorio nacional, así como la garantía de no ser molestados en su persona, sus bienes, su domicilio y su correspondencia, a menos que la acción estuviera precedida por una orden judicial. Por otra parte, ratificó los principios de soberanía popular y gobierno representativo como cimientos del Estado mexicano y estableció el sistema de una República federal, con la división tripartita de los poderes Legislativo, Ejecutivo y Judicial. El bando conservador, apoyado por militares y miembros de la jerarquía católica, se opuso a la Constitución liberal instituyendo un gobierno conservador y desatando la guerra civil entre 1858 y 1860. Sin doblegarse, el gobierno de Benito Juárez asumió la legitimidad del Gobierno republicano, y en un acto de valor y entereza, promulgó las Leyes de Reforma. En 1859 se publicaron las siguientes: * La ley de nacionalización de bienes eclesiásticos, con el propósito de financiar la guerra e incrementar el número de propietarios y contribuyentes. * La ley orgánica del Registro Civil, que permitió al Estado asumir el registro de los nacimientos, adopciones, matrimonios y defunciones, generando documentos útiles para la identidad jurídica de los mexicanos y para gestiones o trámites personales ante las dependencias de gobierno. * La ley del matrimonio civil y la de secularización de cementerios, que establecieron un cuadro normativo sobre dos aspectos esenciales, como es la formación de la familia por medio del vínculo matrimonial y la regulación de los espacios para el reposo de los difuntos. * Mediante la ley de días festivos, se asumió la tarea de programar e instituir un calendario cívico-religioso común para todo el país que permitiera el ejercicio de las actividades económicas, el despacho de los asuntos públicos, el disfrute de los días de asueto y la realización de los ritos y fiestas principales del culto católico. * En 1860 se decretó la ley de libertad de cultos que facilitó el camino para la tolerancia de las confesiones religiosas, con la única limitante del respeto a las creencias de los demás, así como la preservación de la moral y de la paz pública. * En 1861 se promulgó el decreto sobre la secularización de hospitales y establecimientos de beneficencia, con objeto de administrar las casas e instituciones dedicadas al auxilio de la gente necesitada, a la vez que permitiría establecer nuevos orfanatos, comedores públicos, hospitales y asilos de apoyo a los pobres, los huérfanos, las viudas, los ancianos y los desvalidos. Finalmente, en 1863, se decretó la supresión de las comunidades religiosas, toda vez que el pensamiento liberal partía de la preeminencia de los derechos naturales e inalienables del individuo. Durante la presidencia de Sebastián Lerdo de Tejada, se incorporaron a la Constitución las Leyes de Reforma, por una ley emitida el 25 de septiembre de 1873. Bicentenario México 2010 (B) By BicentenarioMexico Con el triunfo de la revolución de Ayutla, se convocó a un nuevo Congreso Constituyente, destinado a elaborar las leyes que regirían la vida del país y de sus instituciones. Conscientes del papel histórico que desempeñaban, los liberales propusieron leyes destinadas a erradicar por completo el orden social heredado de la Colonia. Entre 1855 y 1857, se emitieron las primeras Leyes de Reforma, conocidas por los nombres de los ministros que las impulsaron. - La Ley Juárez estableció la preponderancia del Estado para impatir justicia, excluyendo a los tribunales eclesiásticos y militares en todos los asuntos del orden civil. Así, el Estado se erigía como garante de la paz pública entre unos ciudadanos caracterizados por la igualdad jurídica. - La Ley Lerdo obligaba a las corporaciones civiles y religiosas a vender gran parte de sus casas y haciendas, con el propósito de crear un mayor número de propietarios que generarían riquezas y fuentes de trabajo, lo cual redundaría en beneficio de la hacienda pública. - La Ley Iglesias estableció el carácter gratuito de los servicios religiosos para los pobres, evitando con ello su mortificación y endeudamiento al pagar por la celebración de bautizos, bodas y funerales. Las primeras Leyes de Reforma se promulgaron durante los gobiernos de Juan N. Álvarez e Ignacio Comonfort, quedando incorporadas en la nueva Constitución promulgada el 5 de febrero de 1857. Sin duda, aquella ley contenía preceptos de gran valor y trascendencia; elevó a rango constitucional los derechos del hombre. Al respecto, declaró que todos los mexicanos son libres desde su nacimiento, con pleno derecho a la libertad de enseñanza, de profesión, de conciencia, de petición, de asociación, de desplazamiento en todo el territorio nacional, así como la garantía de no ser molestados en su persona, sus bienes, su domicilio y su correspondencia, a menos que la acción estuviera precedida por una orden judicial. Por otra parte, ratificó los principios de soberanía popular y gobierno representativo como cimientos del Estado mexicano y estableció el sistema de una República federal, con la división tripartita de los poderes Legislativo, Ejecutivo y Judicial. El bando conservador, apoyado por militares y miembros de la jerarquía católica, se opuso a la Constitución liberal instituyendo un gobierno conservador y desatando la guerra civil entre 1858 y 1860. Sin doblegarse, el gobierno de Benito Juárez asumió la legitimidad del Gobierno republicano, y en un acto de valor y entereza, promulgó las Leyes de Reforma. En 1859 se publicaron las siguientes: * La ley de nacionalización de bienes eclesiásticos, con el propósito de financiar la guerra e incrementar el número de propietarios y contribuyentes. * La ley orgánica del Registro Civil, que permitió al Estado asumir el registro de los nacimientos, adopciones, matrimonios y defunciones, generando documentos útiles para la identidad jurídica de los mexicanos y para gestiones o trámites personales ante las dependencias de gobierno. * La ley del matrimonio civil y la de secularización de cementerios, que establecieron un cuadro normativo sobre dos aspectos esenciales, como es la formación de la familia por medio del vínculo matrimonial y la regulación de los espacios para el reposo de los difuntos. * Mediante la ley de días festivos, se asumió la tarea de programar e instituir un calendario cívico-religioso común para todo el país que permitiera el ejercicio de las actividades económicas, el despacho de los asuntos públicos, el disfrute de los días de asueto y la realización de los ritos y fiestas principales del culto católico. * En 1860 se decretó la ley de libertad de cultos que facilitó el camino para la tolerancia de las confesiones religiosas, con la única limitante del respeto a las creencias de los demás, así como la preservación de la moral y de la paz pública. * En 1861 se promulgó el decreto sobre la secularización de hospitales y establecimientos de beneficencia, con objeto de administrar las casas e instituciones dedicadas al auxilio de la gente necesitada, a la vez que permitiría establecer nuevos orfanatos, comedores públicos, hospitales y asilos de apoyo a los pobres, los huérfanos, las viudas, los ancianos y los desvalidos. Finalmente, en 1863, se decretó la supresión de las comunidades religiosas, toda vez que el pensamiento liberal partía de la preeminencia de los derechos naturales e inalienables del individuo. Durante la presidencia de Sebastián Lerdo de Tejada, se incorporaron a la Constitución las Leyes de Reforma, por una ley emitida el 25 de septiembre de 1873. Se consolidaba así la separación entre la Iglesia y el Estado. Para nuestro país, las Leyes de Reforma representaron el intento más decidido de los liberales para instituir una sociedad regulada por el estado de derecho.
