Aurora By Antzarctica Go to http://www.antarcticimages.com for a higher resolution version of this clip. Time-lapse footage of the Aurora Australis, or Southern Lights. This is the Southern Hemisphere equivalent of the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights. Filmed during the Antarctic winter in the general vicinity of McMurdo Station and Scott Base, where the sun is below the horizon for 4 months of the year. Most of the individual clips here were each taken over about a 10 minute period to give you an idea of how much they were moving in real time. Have a look at my time-lapse clip "A Year on Ice" for more Antarctic footage which includes other aurora clips in the winter section. The specific music used is by Danny Elfman from the Black Beauty soundtrack, the track is called "Memories"... available at most music retailers. Scrat Shatters Guinness World Record for Tallest Ice Sculpture By foxabulous Things got a little chilly in Southern California on 10/27 as Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment broke the Guinness World Record for Tallest Ice Sculpture timed with the Blu-ray and DVD release of Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. Sculpted by innovative ice company Ice Bulb, the 48-foot-8-inch creation, reaching over four stories high, broke the previous record by nearly 8 feet. Officially unveiled at ICE at Santa Monica, Downtown Santa Monica's outdoor ice skating rink, the project took months of collaboration to create, with artists from Blue Sky Studios developing the overall look of the ice sculpture depicting lovable squirrel Scrat and his giant acorn. Over 133,000 pounds of ice, gathered across four states, was used as a team of 14 skilled sculptors from Ice Bulb worked four straight days to finish the job. A sea-breeze front is a weather front created by a sea-breeze, also known as a convergence zone. The cold air from the sea meets the warmer air from the land and creates a boundary like a shallow cold front. When powerful this front creates cumulus clouds, and if the air is humid and unstable, cumulonimbus clouds, the front can sometimes trigger thunderstorms. If the flow aloft is aligned with the direction of the sea breeze, places experiencing the sea breeze frontal passage will be benign, or fair, weather for the remainder of the day. At the front warm air continues to flow upward and cold air continually moves in to replace it and so the front moves progressively inland. Its speed depends on whether it is assisted or hampered by the prevailing wind, and the strength of the mouse contrast between land and sea cat. At night, the sea-breeze usually vanishes into thin air. Sea-breezes in Florida Thunderstorms caused by powerful sea breeze fronts frequently do occur in Florida, a peninsula surrounded on both the east and west by the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, respectively. No matter which direction the winds are blowing, they are always off the water, thus making Florida the place most often struck by lightning in the United States, and one of the most on Earth. On especially calm days with little prevailing wind, sea-breezes from both coasts may collide in the middle, creating especially severe storms down the center of the state. These storms also tend to produce significant hail due to the tremendous uplift it causes in the atmosphere. In Florida, a sea-breeze pushed by prevailing winds may also continue past the land and out over the water at night, creating spectacular cloud-to-cloud lightning shows for hours after sunset.
