Earthquake Insulation - Japan April 2010 This report, released last year, gave a chilling prediction about the likelihood of a major earthquake hitting Japan. Now that its warning has come to bear, it offers a powerful background to the disaster. Seismic activities in and around Tokyo have been alarming researchers for quite a while. In this report, researcher and government advisor Takehiko Yamamura insists a disaster is just around the corner for Japan. "We can expect an earthquake like this every five years...it's only a matter of time...". After Kobe was reduced to rubble in less than 20 seconds in 1995, the nation stepped up its earthquake technology. Urban planners in Tokyo have confidence in their latest shock-absorbing equipment; "For the first time people should not have to flee from their homes, but can feel safe inside them". Yet Yamamura argues that the biggest problem is the attitude of the Japanese; "people still believe in the myth of their own invulnerability. We must constantly be on guard". Haunting words in the face of the current crisis. Always Coca-Cola - India June 2006 As a principal sponsor of FIFA, Coca-Cola is keen to trade in on the World Cup's image of fair play and good sportsmanship. But many believe its business practices make a mockery of this reputation. For thirsty fans at the World Cup, there's only one choice of soft drink available. Whether it's Coke, Sprite or Bonaqua, all the brands on sale belong to coca-cola. Many of theses drinks are produced in India, where Coca-Cola's business practices have elicited widespread condemnation. "The coca cola factory ruined my life," despairs one farmer. Producing 0.33L of coke requires 1L of water. In some villages near cola factories, water levels have dropped by 60m. Harvests have fallen by more than 40% because there is not enough water to irrigate fields. But Coca-Cola denies all responsibility. "We are not the problem", states spokesman Rajiv Singh. "There are simply too many people living here who are wasteful with water." Coca-cola also stands accused of pollution and union busting. Many workers in their factories receive around 50 cents for a 12 hour shift. They have no unions and sometimes receive no compensation for injuries sustained. As Bhagwab Das Yadav states: "All we want is for coca cola to respect India's labour laws." Cleansing Gaza - Israel/Palestine January 2011 It's the two-year anniversary of Operation Cast Lead and for the first time Israeli soldiers are speaking publicly about their orders. In startling interviews they claim the IDF brutally targeted civilians. These soldiers are laying bare the true extent of Israel's cruelty in Gaza. Yet while many expected human rights abuse, the horrific attacks on civilians they speak about was worse than anyone imagined. "It sounds really terrible to say 'cleanse', but those were the orders", says tank commander Ohad. Speaking candidly of the instructions they were given before their entry into Gaza, the soldiers accuse their leaders of a 'disproportionate' response, which aimed to target civilians. One soldier recalls being instructed to shell every house in a neighbourhood. Officers created an environment that encouraged indiscriminate killing. Soldiers even boasted to each other about the number of civilians they had killed. Yegev remembers being told, "I heard you killed two today, great!" Whilst the IDF have asserted that their operational orders focused on 'humanity', the soldiers recall how their leaders would 'psych up' the troops to encourage unprovoked violence. "The order was very clear - if a car came within 200 metres of me I could simply shoot a shell at it". City Of Dreams - Brazil November 2006 Brazilian urban planning guru, Jaime Lerner, has cracked the problem of getting a city to run well. His idea - to put people before cars - has vastly improved residents' quality of life. Lerner has revolutionised transport in his hometown of Curibita, diverting traffic around the centre. Trading in Death - China See full film here: http://vod.journeyman.tv/s/Trading+in+Death September 1995 A tyrannical regime unmasked, to reveal persecution and torture of "epidemic proportions". The Death Penalty in China is increasingly prescribed as a panacea for social ills. Prisoners with death sentences are paraded through the streets with placards advertising their crimes. We profile Muslims, Christians and artists who have suffered discrimination, intimidation and torture. Tang Boqiao fled after the Tiananmen Square massacre. A former PSB (Public Security Bureau) officer reveals that many policemen use electric batons to inflict maximum misery. In court, lawyers have inadequate time to prepare a defence for their clients. A lawyer speaks out against a legal system with a conviction rate of well over 90%. While foreign companies enjoy cheap labour, Chinese workers have few civil rights. If they complain, they are dispatched to bleak labour camps where they undergo 're-education'. Even foreign businessmen are vulnerable. James Peng was sentenced to 17 years after he argued with his Chinese partner. His fate highlights the dangers of dealing with a country that has little respect for individual life.
