Shotokan is one of the five traditional karate styles. the word "karate" essentially means "open hand" -- as in fighting with the hands holding no weapons. Shotokan is based heavily on the ancient philosophy of Bushido and Zen. Emphasis placed on principles alluding to notions of humility, respect, compassion, patience. Through karate practice and with the observation of Shotokan's 20 principles, it was believed a karateka (karate student) would improve overall as a person. Emphasis is not on combat training as in sumo, jujutsu and kenjutsu. But, instead on health, breathing, the release of energy, and a high control over the mind and body. Nonetheless, Shotokan can (with modification) be regarded as a "hard, external martial art" with combat implications. Fanatically, Van Damme lifted weights to improve his skinny, small and non-athletic physique and subsequently won the Mr. Belgium bodybuilding title; this was an unbelievable accomplishment given Van Damme's appearing in early photo as a weak child. His impressive physique is now know the world over being the subject of countless magazine covers and articles. Van Damme then pursued further karate training studying Taekwondo, which is famous for spectacular spinning kicks and Mauy Thai, a combat sport, in addition to his earlier Shotokan training. Following the high success coming from his 1988 "Bloodsport" jealous critics claimed Van Damme was not a karate champion because no fight records could be found. They overlooked, however, that "Van Damme" was a stage name not his real name "Van Varenberg. All Jean-Claude's fights were between his ages of 16 to 19; this before he took the stage name of Van Damme as we all know him today. His fight record, of course, was under his real birth name. Van Varenberg. is recently re-credited with having 18 fights and wining 17 fights by KO's and losing one match by decision against Patrick Teguels. Van Damme requested a re-match with Teguels the reigning World's Vice Karate Champion (1979) -- and won back his one and only lost within the first round overpowering Teguels with a beautiful, aggressive attack at the bell.
