Se encuentran en todos los océanos, especialmente en las cálidas aguas tropicales y subtropicales. Su más sorprendente característica es el tamaño de sus aletas pectorales, inusualmente grandes, que le permiten volar y planear por distancias de hasta 50 metros. Teniendo en cuenta que los exocétidos adultos miden sólo unos 30 cm, esta capacidad va mucho más allá de los simples saltos fuera del agua, como por ejemplos los del pez vela. Además, los peces voladores alcanzan velocidades en el aire de 50 a 60 km/h (como un caballo que no es de carreras, a máximo galope). Estas distancias y velocidades son posibles gracias al rápido batir de sus alas (unas 50 veces por segundo). La ventaja final de este mecanismo es una mayor posibilidad de escape ante predadores. En algunas especies las aletas pélvicas también son inusualmente grandes, y hacen parecer que el pez tiene cuatro alas, como el Cheilopogon exsiliens de la fotografía inferior. Sus ojos son más planos que los de la mayoría de los ojos de los otros peces, para ver fuera del agua. Viven cerca de la superficie del agua y se alimentan de plancton. Su hueva es utilizada a veces en Japón, especialmente para preparar sushi. Su nombre exocétido proviene del griego εξω-κοιτος, exo-koitos, "yacer fuera" en el sentido de "dormir bajo las estrellas", por el hecho de que no es raro que queden varados en las cubiertas de los barcos al salir del agua por las noches. La constelación Volans hace referencia a este pez, y uno de los géneros, Hirundichthys, significa "pez golondrina" en griego. Muchas son abejas sociales,especialmente las de la subfamilia Apinae,pero otras son abejas solitarias y algunas son parásitas,es decir que ponen sus huevos en los nidos de otras abejas.El comportamiento social parece haber evolucionado independientemente en más de un grupo.En las sociedades de abejas hay distintas castas,con una reina(o reinas) que se dedica a la reproducción y numerosas obreras,no reproductivas que hacen todas las tareas de mantenimiento del nido.Además están los machos o zánganos. Hay ejemplos de distintos grados de socialidad en diferentes especies.Apis mellifera es un ejemplo de eusocialidad es decir del grado más avanzado de socialidad con colonias permanentes.Otras como ser abejorros presentan un grado de socialidad menos complejo con una reina iniciando una colonia nueva cada año. La taxonomía ha sido modificada y aún no hay acuerdo completo en la clasificación. Anteriormente sólo las abejas relacionadas a la abeja melífera,los abejorros y las abejas de las orquídeas eran considerados miembros de esta familia pero ahora también se incluyen todas las abejas que antes se ubicaban en la familia Anthoporidae,es decir las abejas parásitas,los abejorros carpinteros y otras. AVISPA GIGANTE: Se distribuye por Primorsky Krai,Corea,China,Taiwán(donde se denomina abeja del tigre),Indochina,Nepal,la India y Sri Lanka,pero es más común en las montañas de Japón. Los avispones atacan a menudo colmenas de abejas con la meta de obtener las larvas de las mismas.Los avispones pueden devastar una colonia de abejas:un solo avispón puede matar 40 abejas por minuto;en unas pocas horas los avispones pueden exterminar la población de una colmena de abejas de más de 30.000 individuos.Una vez que una colmena se vacio de abejas que defienden,los avispones llevan las larvas de la abeja para alimentar sus propias larvas. Más bien que consumir las larvas,los avispones las mastican formando una masa con la que alimentan a sus larvas(un avispón adulto no puede digerir la proteína sólida).Las larvas del avispón,producen un líquido claro que los adultos consumen.
