Induction motor, 1 phase, manual start removing capacitor. FOR MORE INFO READ THIS VIDEO DESCRIPTION This is an induction motor, single phase, 127 V. Its nominal speed is 1625RPM. 4 poles. First I run it with its permanent capacitor, closing the circuit on the two different sides of the capacitor, to show that it will be the cause of the rotating direction. After that, I remove the capacitor and run it but only with one winding connected at a time. Single phase motors have a main winding and an auxiliary winding. The black wire of the motor is permanently connected to the phase. The white wire is the main winding. The yellow wire is the auxiliary winding. You will see the starting problem that all single phase motors have in common. There is no torque on them to start rotating!!! In this case I crank it with my hand to start it. It also shows that by cranking it you can give the motor the rotating direction you decide with the crank, and that you can use either the main winding or auxiliary winding to run it but not both at the same time (without the capacitor). Since the auxiliary and main windings have different inductance and resistance values, the rotor runs faster on one than in the other, but you can start it with your hand in any direction regardless of the working winding. Melting salt with Induction heater Demonstrating the high temperature of the work piece by melting salt in a nut. When the salt starts melting at 800C the nut is only red. The nut glows yellow after a few more minutes (not in the vid.) indicating around 1000C, at which point the salt evaporates quickly. Induction heating was done with my new heater. When a copper pendulum with strips cut into it is swung between the same magnets, it is not slowed nearly as much as the solid pendulum. This is because the cuts in the copper prevent large eddy currents from forming. Only eddy currents smaller than the strips of copper can be formed. On the first DVD I share this brief hypnotic exercise. I posted it a few years back and got about 300k hits, then changed by ID and reposted it. MIT Physics Demo -- The Wimshurst Machine A Wimshurst electrostatic generator - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wimshurst_machine - , working on the principle of induction, generates high voltage differences and sparks between two movable electrodes. By increasing the distance between the electrodes, higher potential differences can be built up. Electrostatic induction - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrostatic_induction - refers to the principle that charges in an object (especially a conductor) redistribute themselves in the presence of nearby charges. Opposite charges are attracted to each other, while similar charges are repelled. Larger charges can be stored by connecting the knobs to Leyden jars which are component parts of the machine.
