Billy Jack Ice Cream Shop Billy Jack, the movie released in 1971, centers around the character of the same name. Billy Jack, played by Tom Laughlin, is a Native American ex-Green Beret Vietnam War veteran who plays the hero. He takes it upon himself to make his mission to defend the hippie-themed Freedom School and its students from the machinations of racist who make life difficult for individuals living on a reservations. The film hit on a potent formula with this message in 1971, and went on to become one of the highest grossing of its time.
