Women shave their legs an average of eleven times a month, so you might as well learn to perfect your technique. To complete this How-To you will need: Hot water Razor Tub or shower to shave in Shaving cream Alcohol-free lotion Step 1: Shower or bathe Begin by showering or bathing in hot water. Hot water softens your hair, opens pores and relaxes skin, making it easier to shave. Step 2: Lather legs w/ shaving cream While still in the shower or tub, lather up your legs with shaving cream. Step 3: Start at top of foot & pull up Using a razor with a sharp, clean blade, start at the top of your foot and pull gently up the entire length of your leg in one smooth stroke. Tip: To avoid nicks or cuts around your ankle, flex your heel to stretch the skin around the bone when you shave. Step 4: Pull skin taut w/ one hand Pull sections of leg skin straight and taut with one hand, and use the razor with the other. Shave against the direction your hair grows. Tip: Don't put too much pressure on your razor, because this can cause razor burn and skin irritations. Step 5: Rinse razor blade Rinse your razor blade after every few strokes to remove the shaving cream and hair. Tip: To trim your bikini area, shave in the direction the hair grows, then re-lather with shaving cream and shave lightly against the direction of the growth. Be gentle: The coarser hair makes this area more prone to razor burn. Step 6: Moisturize legs Moisturize your legs with an alcohol-free lotion, which will soften the skin without burning or stinging. Voila! Perfectly smooth legs for nearly 72 hours. Thanks for watching How To Shave Your Legs! How To Replace Your iPod Battery Handle any emergency with Howcast's First Aid app - http://howc.st/jkDRTe Expand the description and view the text of the steps for this how-to video. You can pay Apple to replace your iPod battery, or you can save big bucks by doing it yourself. To complete this How-To you will need: A stiff piece of plastic, like a guitar pick A new iPod battery Step 1: Buy new battery Go online and buy a new battery from a site like www.newertech.com. Make sure you get the correct battery for your iPod. Start with your iPod off and the "Hold" switch engaged. Step 2: Pry open Pry open the iPod. Wedge a flat piece of durable plastic between the two sides—a guitar pick works well—and gently work it along the sides until you can feel the tabs holding the case together. Unclip them by poking them inward. Warning: If your iPod is less than a year old (or two, if you bought the extended protection plan), opening it will void its warranty. Step 3: Separate Separate the two sides, taking care not to sever the thin ribbon cable joining the two parts. Step 4: Remove hard drive Carefully remove the hard drive—it is the part sitting on a piece of blue rubber—by lifting the socket of the cable that connects the hard drive to the board. Step 5: Remove battery Remove the battery using your wedge, taking care not to touch the circuit board underneath. Tip: Pay attention to how the battery is connected so you can reattach the new one the same way. Step 6: Disconnect power cord Disconnect the battery's power cord from the circuit board. The wires may be wrapped around or under the circuit board; if so, gently pull them free with your pick. Step 7: Wrap power cord Attach the new battery's power cord and wrap it around the edge of the circuit board in the same way as the old cord. Step 8: Attach new battery Insert the new battery, then reattach the hard drive connector and the hard drive. Step 9: Snap back Snap or screw the two sides of the iPod back together. Recharge your new battery for at least three hours—then enjoy your tunes once again. Thanks for watching How To Replace Your iPod Battery! The double-lift — taking two cards off the top of a deck while pretending you're just removing one — is a fundamental card sleight that is the basis for hundreds of card tricks. To complete this How-To you will need: A deck of cards Patience A mirror to practice in front of Step 1: Separate the top two cards Rifle through a deck of cards in your left hand as you chat with your audience. Separate the top two cards from the deck and hold the break with your pinky. Step 2: Square the deck in your hand Square the deck and cup it between your thumb and your remaining three fingers. Your first finger should curl around the top — this ensures that the two cards will remain squared and look like one. Step 3: Lift the top two cards as one Put your right forefinger into the break and your right thumb firmly on the middle of the top card. Slide them to your right, keeping the left-hand side of the cards resting on the deck. Quickly flip them over. Tip: Sliding the edge of the cards on top of the deck ensures that they stay flush. Step 4: Show the audience the false top card Display the two cards as one and then reverse the steps above to flip them back over. Tip: Misdirection is as important as sleight-of-hand skills. Look directly at audience members and keep chatting so they will focus on your face, not your hands. Step 5: Practice Practice until you can do this fast and flawlessly, because it is the foundation of many card tricks. Thanks for watching How To Perform a Double-Lift Card Sleight! Locked yourself out of the house? Most common pin and tumbler locks can be picked with a little luck and finesse—so before you call a locksmith, try this. To complete this How-To you will need: A paperclip or safety pin A tension wrench (sometimes called a torque wrench) A second paperclip Warning: Only pick your own locks—or you could wind up in a lot of trouble. Step 1: Get a paperclip Get a paperclip or safety pin and bend it straight. Now make a slight upwards bend at the very end. Tip: You can buy a professional lock pick set at a hardware store. There is a basic size intended for American locks. Step 2: Insert the wrench Insert your wrench into the lower part of the keyhole—that is, the side opposite the one where the key's teeth would go in. Step 3: Determine direction Figure out which way the lock needs to be turned to open by turning the wrench clockwise and then counterclockwise. You'll feel which way has more give. Step 4: Turn the lock Turn the lock the correct way with the wrench, putting slight pressure on it. Hold the wrench in place. Step 5: Insert the paperclip While keeping pressure on the lock, insert the end of the paperclip into the top part of the keyhole. Step 6: Feel for pins Feel around the keyhole with the paperclip until you locate the pins. If you're picking a common door lock, there will most likely be at least five of them in a row. Tip: Before you start, many experts suggest "raking" the lock. Straighten your second paperclip, put a few bends at the wire's end, and—with no pressure on your wrench—shove it to the back of the lock. Now pull it out quickly, pressing against the top of the lock while gently turning your wrench. You might just set a pin or two that way. Step 7: Push up Now for the actual "picking." One at a time, push each pin up with the paperclip. Try to feel for the moment when the pin reaches its "unlocked" position. You should feel a slight give—or even hear a faint click. Tip: Start with the pin furthest away from you—then move on to the next. Step 8: Increase the pressure As you go, apply slightly more pressure with the wrench until you have all the pins lifted up. Step 9: Turn the wrench Now turn the wrench fully. Voila! The lock will pop open. Thanks for watching How To Pick a Lock! Should you skip shaving and save yourself from potential razor burn, or should you get a nice close shave and save a loved one from certain whisker burn? Learn to shave correctly, and you'll solve this burning question to everyone's satisfaction. To complete this How-To you will need: Warm water A razor Shaving cream A mirror A sink or basin Cool water And a towel The aftershave lotion or moisturizer or your choice A washcloth (optional) (optional) Styptic pencil (optional) (optional) And some tissue or toilet paper (optional) (optional) Step 1: Shave around lips Shave the remaining areas above and below your lips. For a closer shave, contort your mouth as needed. Step 2: Fill sink Fill your sink or basin halfway with warm water. Step 3: Wet a washcloth Wet a washcloth with the warm water and hold it to your face for a few minutes to soften the hair and open up your skin's pores. Tip: If you don't have a few minutes to spare, just wet your face directly with warm water. It's better than nothing. Step 4: Check the blade Check to see if the blade on your razor is fresh. If not, replace it. Shaving with a dull blade increases your chances of cutting yourself. Step 5: Apply shaving cream Squirt a small amount of shaving cream into your palm and, using the fingers of your other hand, spread it evenly over your stubble. Watch what you're doing in the mirror. Step 6: Shave one side Concentrating on one side of your face, start near your sideburns and slowly drag the razor downward in the direction your facial hair grows. Use light but firm pressure. Tip: Shaving against the natural direction of your facial hair can cause razor burn and ingrown hairs. Step 7: Shave other side After every few strokes, rinse off your blade in the sink to keep it from getting clogged with hair. Continue shaving, and when you've finished one side from your ear to your jaw line, move to the other side of your face. Step 8: Shave chin and neck When you've finished both sides, tackle the trickier spots—your chin and neck. Shave more slowly and carefully in these areas, stretching your skin with one hand while shaving with the other. Tip: If you cut yourself, use a styptic pencil to stop the bleeding. If you don't have one, press a small piece of tissue or toilet paper onto the cut. Step 9: Check your face Check to see if you missed any spots on your face, especially just under your jaw line. If so, go back and shave them. You may want to reapply some shaving cream. Step 10: Rinse and dry face Rinse your face with cool water and remove any remaining shaving cream, then pat your face dry with a towel. Step 11: Apply aftershave or moisturizer Apply aftershave or moisturizer to revitalize your traumatized skin. Now go get 'em, handsome! Thanks for watching How To Shave Your Face! Is there someone you like, but the person doesn't see you that way—or doesn't see you at all? What you need is a plan to get your would-be lover to kiss you. To complete this How-To you will need: Time alone with the person A romantic atmosphere Sexually-charged banter Liquor Step 1: Pick the right time Pick the right time. Ideally, this is when you two have some privacy so that shyness or fear of rejection doesn't loom so large. Step 2: Set the mood Set the mood. If you're trying to get someone to see you as more than a friend, arrange to spend some time with them in an intimate setting. Tip: If you're both of drinking age, loosen the person's inhibitions with a little booze—emphasis on "little." You want them relaxed, not drunk. Step 3: Take a hands-on approach Signal your interest with a subtle hands-on approach—look for opportunities to make subtle physical contact with the object of your affection. Step 4: Drop hints Sprinkle the conversation with tasteful, not crude, sexual innuendo to send the signal that you see the person as more than a friend. Step 5: Close in Begin moving your body closer and closer to the object of your affection. If the person doesn't instinctively move back to restore the distance, you're ready to come in for the kill. Step 6: Look to the lips Focus on the other person's lips and—slowly, sensually—bring your lips to theirs. Step 7: Cut your losses Keep going. This may be just the beginning of a beautiful friendship... Thanks for watching How To Get Someone To Kiss You! Anyone can be, with the right technique. To complete this How-To you will need: A partner you're passionate about And a comfortable space, such as a couch Step 1: Clean your mouth Brush your teeth, floss and use mouthwash. Bad breath is the ruination of kissing. At the very least, have a mint. Step 2: Sit w/ partner in private Sit with your partner, preferably in private. Public displays of affection may be fun for you, but they make everyone else uncomfortable. Step 3: Relax Relax and clear your mind. Focus only on the person with you. Tip: Angle your face to avoid crunching noses. Step 4: Touch lips Lean into the person until your lips touch. Step 5: Be soft & gentle Keep lip contact soft and gentle in the beginning. Step 6: Experiment Experiment with different movements and techniques. For instance, gently suck on your partner's lower lip, or caress his lips lightly with your tongue. Step 7: Use your tongue Open your mouth enough to slowly slide your tongue into your partner's mouth. If you get an enthusiastic response, start exploring the inside of each other's mouth. Just remember to keep it slow and soft, not darting or invasive. Tip: Don't forget to breathe through your nose. Nothing ruins a good make-out like falling unconscious. Step 8: Come up for air As the make-out session intensifies, come up for air by kissing your partner's face, ears, and neck, even giving them the occasional soft nip or gently tugging on their hair in the heat of the moment. Tip: Truly passionate kissing has a sense of urgency, as if you've been waiting for this moment for so long that you can't hold back. Step 9: Use your hands Use your hands: kissing is made complete by strokes and caresses. Try holding the person's face as you kiss. Step 10: Practice Practice makes perfect. You don't need supplements to prevent cancer — look to the food you eat every day to pack in all the healthy nutrients you need. To complete this How-To you will need: Berries Spices Sources of isothiocyanate Watercress Green tea Sources of folate Brazil nuts Omega-3-rich fish Garlic Asian mushrooms Apples Flaxseed Broccoli sprouts Macadamia nuts Step 1: Pick some blackberries Pick up some blackberries; they contain twice the antioxidant content of blueberries. Strawberries, cranberries, and raspberries are cancer-fighters, too. Step 2: Spice up your life Curry lovers, rejoice! Turmeric, the spice that gives the popular Indian dish its yellow hue, inhibits the development of cancer. Ginger runs a close second, followed by cinnamon. Step 3: Eat your broccoli Eat your broccoli. It contains isothiocyanate, a compound that fights several cancers. While Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, and arugula also have ITCs, broccoli is king because it has a particularly potent kind called sulforaphane. Tip: Broccoli sprouts have the highest concentration of sulforaphane. Step 4: Eat & drink your greens Munch on watercress and drink green tea. Both increase the amount of cancer-fighting antioxidants in your blood, and watercress protects your DNA from changes that can trigger cancer. Step 5: Enjoy asparagus Enjoy a bunch of asparagus; it contains the B vitamin folate, which may reduce the risk of several cancers. Other good sources of folate are orange juice, lentils, spinach, peanuts, and broccoli. Step 6: Go nuts Go nuts — as long as they're Brazil nuts. They contain selenium, which fights cancer cells. Go for the unshelled ones, which have more selenium. But limit yourself to one large or two small freshly-shelled nuts per day, as too much selenium is toxic. Tip: Macadamia nuts contain almost as much selenium as Brazil nuts. Step 7: Order the fish Eat fish a few of times a week. An Italian study found that people who eat fish twice a week reduce their risk of developing several cancers by 30% to 50%. Go with Omega-3-rich fish like salmon, sardines, mackerel, and tuna. Step 8: Reek of garlic Indulge in garlicky foods. Fans of this pungent bulb have a lower risk of stomach and colon cancer because cooked garlic inhibits cancer cells from growing. Step 9: Don't fear fungus Consume more Asian mushrooms — in lab tests, shitakes repressed cancer cell growth. Also try maitake, zhu ling, enoki, and red reishi mushrooms. Step 10: Eat an apple a day An apple a day may keep the oncologist away. Studies have found that when pulverized apple skins were placed in a petri dish with colon cancer cells, the cells' growth was inhibited by an impressive 43%. So don't peel before eating! Step 11: Fill up on flax Incorporate flaxseed into your diet. In a Canadian study, women diagnosed with breast cancer who ate a daily flaxseed muffin for 40 days showed a statistically significant reduction in the size of their tumor compared with a control group. Avoid getting ambushed by the ruthless player. Here's how to identify the traits of this predatory species. To complete this How-To you will need: Observational skills Immunity to empty flattery Healthy suspicion Step 1: Beware of the stare Beware of a guy who stares at you for too long. It's a sign of aggression and usually means you're his next conquest. Step 2: Assess his style Assess a guy's style for clues. Super-grooming signals he's probably more into himself than you. Step 3: Pay attention to body language Pay attention to his body language. If he leans in close to you right away he is staking out his territory. Tip: A player will bore a hole in you with his eyes while talking, then look away when you respond -- a good sign he's not really listening. Step 4: Distrust immediate intimacy Distrust the guy who showers you with compliments or falls for you too quickly. Players use charm and flattery as a way to move in quickly. Step 5: Look for an ever-present cell phone Look for an ever-present cell phone in the hand of the player. If he guards his cell phone like a pit bull and doesn't let you use it, he's probably a player. Tip: The sophisticated player will acknowledge that he has many female "friends" who often call. Step 6: Be suspicious of unreliability Be suspicious if the player always calls late, doesn't show up, and constantly offers lame excuses. Look out for a guy who's always busy. Step 7: Beware of jealousy Beware of someone who's extremely jealous and possessive, especially early in the relationship. If they don't trust you, it usually means they can't be trusted themselves. How To Make Hand Roll Sushi Handle any emergency with Howcast's First Aid app - http://howc.st/jkDRTe Expand the description and view the text of the steps for this how-to video. Create your own DIY guide at http://www.howcast.com/videos/new or produce your own Howcast spots with the Howcast Filmmakers Program at http://www.howcast.com/filmmakers/apply. Hand roll sushi, also known as 'cone sushi,' is the easiest type of sushi to make, and you can fill it however you want —let your taste buds be your guide. To complete this How-To you will need: 3 sheets of toasted nori 1 c. prepared sushi rice 6 raw fish cut into slabs A cucumber An avocado A sharp chef's knife A cutting board Some water Some prepared wasabi Japanese pickled ginger A small spoon A small dish And a serving platter Step 1: Prepare cucumber Peel the cucumber, cut off the ends, and cut it in half lengthwise. Remove the seeds, cut the cucumber into thin strips about one-eighth to one-quarter inch wide, and set the strips aside. Step 2: Prepare avocado Cut the avocado in half lengthwise and twist the two halves until they separate. Cut the half without the pit into two quarters. Cut off the ends, remove the skin, and slice lengthwise into quarter-inch slices. Set the slices aside. Tip: You can include whatever vegetables you like—scallions, carrots, zucchini, radishes—to customize your hand roll to your own personal taste. Step 3: Tear nori sheets Tear or cut the nori sheets in half. Step 4: Hold nori side down Hold a half sheet of nori shiny side down in the palm of one hand, supporting its length with your fingers. Step 5: Press rice into nori Moisten your other hand with a little water and grab about 1/4 cup— a small handful—of prepared sushi rice. Ball up the rice and press it onto the left-hand side of the nori. Step 6: Spread rice Spread the rice out to about a quarter-inch thickness, leaving a margin of nori around it, then press your index finger into the middle to make an indentation. Step 7: Add filling Lay a small amount of filling—say, one piece of fish and a slice or two of vegetable—in the indentation in the rice. Tip: If you are hosting a 'sushi party,' place all your fillings on one serving platter and have your guests choose their fillings and roll their own. Step 8: Tightly roll Still holding the nori, rice, and filling in one hand, use your other hand to tightly roll up the bottom left-hand corner on the diagonal, over the rice and filling. Step 9: Wrap into cone Tightly wrap the opposite right-hand edge around, using a folding and tucking method to create a cone shape with the filling on the inside. Step 10: Secure edge Use a dab of rice on the corner to secure the inside edge of the nori to the outside of the cone. Step 11: Place on plate & garnish Make as many rolls as you want, and place them on a plate with a mound of prepared wasabi and a mound of Japanese picked ginger. Created during the 1898 Spanish-American War to liberate Cuba, the Cuba Libre was originally mixed at a bar by an off-duty U.S. soldier. It has since become the liberating libation of choice for freedom-loving drinkers around the world. To complete this How-To you will need: Ice 1 1/2 oz. rum Cola A highball glass 2 lime wedges A swizzle stick Step 1: Add ice Drop a few ice cubes into the glass. Step 2: Add rum Pour in 1.5 ounces of rum. Tip: Light rum or dark rum work equally well in this drink, and although fresh lime juice is preferred, bottled juice will work too. Step 3: Fill with cola Fill up the rest of the cocktail glass with cola. Step 4: Add lime & stir Squeeze a wedge of lime into the drink and stir with a swizzle stick. Tip: The Cuba Libre, for obvious reasons, has also become known as a Rum & Coke, which is usually made without the lime. Step 5: Garnish & serve Garnish the drink with the second lime wedge, serve, and salute. Thanks for watching How To Make a Cuba Libre!
