How To Replace Your iPod Battery

Handle any emergency with Howcast's First Aid app - http://howc.st/jkDRTe Expand the description and view the text of the steps for this how-to video. Check out Howcast for other do-it-yourself videos from bencheek and more videos in the Portable Music & Video Players category. You can contribute too! Create your own DIY guide at http://www.howcast.com/videos/new or produce your own Howcast spots with the Howcast Filmmakers Program at http://www.howcast.com/filmmakers/apply. You can pay Apple to replace your iPod battery, or you can save big bucks by doing it yourself. To complete this How-To you will need: A stiff piece of plastic, like a guitar pick A new iPod battery Step 1: Buy new battery Go online and buy a new battery from a site like www.newertech.com. Make sure you get the correct battery for your iPod. Start with your iPod off and the "Hold" switch engaged. Step 2: Pry open Pry open the iPod. Wedge a flat piece of durable plastic between the two sides—a guitar pick works well—and gently work it along the sides until you can feel the tabs holding the case together. Unclip them by poking them inward. Warning: If your iPod is less than a year old (or two, if you bought the extended protection plan), opening it will void its warranty. Step 3: Separate Separate the two sides, taking care not to sever the thin ribbon cable joining the two parts. Step 4: Remove hard drive Carefully remove the hard drive—it is the part sitting on a piece of blue rubber—by lifting the socket of the cable that connects the hard drive to the board. Step 5: Remove battery Remove the battery using your wedge, taking care not to touch the circuit board underneath. Tip: Pay attention to how the battery is connected so you can reattach the new one the same way. Step 6: Disconnect power cord Disconnect the battery's power cord from the circuit board. The wires may be wrapped around or under the circuit board; if so, gently pull them free with your pick. Step 7: Wrap power cord Attach the new battery's power cord and wrap it around the edge of the circuit board in the same way as the old cord. Step 8: Attach new battery Insert the new battery, then reattach the hard drive connector and the hard drive. Step 9: Snap back Snap or screw the two sides of the iPod back together. Recharge your new battery for at least three hours—then enjoy your tunes once again. Thanks for watching How To Replace Your iPod Battery! Lolo's Alarm Clock -- Setting time and alarm

A fancy alarm clock built with the Arduino platform and hardware. It keeps track of time and can measure temperature, humidity, dew point, light level, air quality, and sleep patterns. It's designed as a wooden box with touch sensing for control. It monitors the quality of air, and general comfort in the room during sleep and wakes you up at the best possible time by sensing your sleep state with an accelerometer sensor under the bed. All data is logged wireless to a base station connected to the computer for latter analysis. Right now I am providing all source code (Arduino) and videos for the project. Details on the electronics will be provided at some later time. More info: http://code.google.com/p/lolosalarmclock/

How To Perform a Double-Lift Card Sleight

Handle any emergency with Howcast's First Aid app - http://howc.st/jkDRTe Expand the description and view the text of the steps for this how-to video. Check out Howcast for other do-it-yourself videos from vinzfeller and more videos in the Card Tricks category. You can contribute too! Create your own DIY guide at http://www.howcast.com/videos/new or produce your own Howcast spots with the Howcast Filmmakers Program at http://www.howcast.com/filmmakers/apply. The double-lift — taking two cards off the top of a deck while pretending you're just removing one — is a fundamental card sleight that is the basis for hundreds of card tricks. To complete this How-To you will need: A deck of cards Patience A mirror to practice in front of Step 1: Separate the top two cards Rifle through a deck of cards in your left hand as you chat with your audience. Separate the top two cards from the deck and hold the break with your pinky. Step 2: Square the deck in your hand Square the deck and cup it between your thumb and your remaining three fingers. Your first finger should curl around the top — this ensures that the two cards will remain squared and look like one. Step 3: Lift the top two cards as one Put your right forefinger into the break and your right thumb firmly on the middle of the top card. Slide them to your right, keeping the left-hand side of the cards resting on the deck. Quickly flip them over. Tip: Sliding the edge of the cards on top of the deck ensures that they stay flush. Step 4: Show the audience the false top card Display the two cards as one and then reverse the steps above to flip them back over. Tip: Misdirection is as important as sleight-of-hand skills. Look directly at audience members and keep chatting so they will focus on your face, not your hands. Step 5: Practice Practice until you can do this fast and flawlessly, because it is the foundation of many card tricks. Thanks for watching How To Perform a Double-Lift Card Sleight! Knitting one-row button holes

In this video from http://www.knittinghelp.com , Amy shares with you a simple method for creating a button hole in a knitted work. If the button you're using is 4 stitches wide, make a 3-stitch buttonhole (as demonstrated). For a 5-stitch-wide button, make a 4-stitch buttonhole, etc. Step 1 -- work to where you want buttonhole to begin. Bring yarn to front; slip 1 purl-wise, bring yarn to back. Step 2 -- Slip 1 purl-wise, pass first slipped stitch over second. (repeat this part 2 more times--passing over 3 stitches total, for a 3-stitch buttonhole) Place last stitch back on left needle. Turn work. Step 3 -- Cast on 4 stitches (for the 3 stitches you bound off, plus 1) using the cable cast-on method. Step 4 -- Turn work (so RS is facing). Bring yarn to back; slip first st of left needle onto right needle and pass last CO st over it. ....You're done! Work to end of the row, or to the next buttonhole!

How To Pick a Lock

Handle any emergency with Howcast's First Aid app - http://howc.st/jkDRTe Expand the description and view the text of the steps for this how-to video. Check out Howcast for other do-it-yourself videos from Chris_Davis and more videos in the Home Security category. You can contribute too! Create your own DIY guide at http://www.howcast.com/videos/new or produce your own Howcast spots with the Howcast Filmmakers Program at http://www.howcast.com/filmmakers/apply. Locked yourself out of the house? Most common pin and tumbler locks can be picked with a little luck and finesse—so before you call a locksmith, try this. To complete this How-To you will need: A paperclip or safety pin A tension wrench (sometimes called a torque wrench) A second paperclip Warning: Only pick your own locks—or you could wind up in a lot of trouble. Step 1: Get a paperclip Get a paperclip or safety pin and bend it straight. Now make a slight upwards bend at the very end. Tip: You can buy a professional lock pick set at a hardware store. There is a basic size intended for American locks. Step 2: Insert the wrench Insert your wrench into the lower part of the keyhole—that is, the side opposite the one where the key's teeth would go in. Step 3: Determine direction Figure out which way the lock needs to be turned to open by turning the wrench clockwise and then counterclockwise. You'll feel which way has more give. Step 4: Turn the lock Turn the lock the correct way with the wrench, putting slight pressure on it. Hold the wrench in place. Step 5: Insert the paperclip While keeping pressure on the lock, insert the end of the paperclip into the top part of the keyhole. Step 6: Feel for pins Feel around the keyhole with the paperclip until you locate the pins. If you're picking a common door lock, there will most likely be at least five of them in a row. Tip: Before you start, many experts suggest "raking" the lock. Straighten your second paperclip, put a few bends at the wire's end, and—with no pressure on your wrench—shove it to the back of the lock. Now pull it out quickly, pressing against the top of the lock while gently turning your wrench. You might just set a pin or two that way. Step 7: Push up Now for the actual "picking." One at a time, push each pin up with the paperclip. Try to feel for the moment when the pin reaches its "unlocked" position. You should feel a slight give—or even hear a faint click. Tip: Start with the pin furthest away from you—then move on to the next. Step 8: Increase the pressure As you go, apply slightly more pressure with the wrench until you have all the pins lifted up. Step 9: Turn the wrench Now turn the wrench fully. Voila! The lock will pop open. Thanks for watching How To Pick a Lock! Origami Rose Bush Bonsai -1 - Trunk

The first phase creating an origami rose bush bonsai, preparing the trunk of the tree. Origami Rose Bush Bonsai This is not so much a tutorial, but rather my experience creating a Bonsai Rose bush. Creating an origami bonsai is as much an exercise of creativity, as it it one of skill. Most of the actual origami that goes into a Bonsai tree -- flowers and leaves mostly -- can be found by searching the web for the many video tutorials available. Kawasaki Rose Revisited http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bq0WKQZMnt8 Kawasaki Rose Leaves http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_jiyRNJK_U Materials You'll need to gather a few materials, roughly in the order you'll need them: -20 Gage copper wire (or some other soft flexible wire) -50-100 1 inch strips of news print -1-2 cups of paper mache glue (1:5 flour:water, Stirred briskly, brought to a boil for a minute or two, then cooled before use (add a tsp of salt to prevent mould) -Red, green, and brown tissue foil (you'll need to make this this: tissue, heavy duty kitchen foil, white glue) -Fine brown textured paper for the trunk of the bonsai (or some brown paint) -Small bonsai pot -Small piece of foam for flower arranging -A cup or two of coloured aquarium gravel -A small handful of sheet moss (optional) Tools Small pair of pliers for shaping the copper wire frame Sharp scissors 2" paint roller Pencil & Ruler 1 inch paint brush Thin, blunt stick for shaping Step 1 Plan Find Examples of bonsai trees Create a wireframe frame for the trunk and branches your bonsai tree. Use a thin flexible wire. I use 20 gauge copper. Step 2 Cut some foot long one inch strips of newsprint Make your paper mache glue. Ingredients 1 part flour 5 parts water Bring four cups of the water to a boil. Mix the remaining cup of water with the cup of flour, and stir briskly to break up lumps. Stir the flour/water mixture into the boiling water, stirring constantly. Bring it back to a slow boil for a few moments, or until the thickening glue is smooth. Remove from the heat and let cool. Done. Add a teaspoon of salt to prevent mold when storing the glue. Store in a refrigerator. Optionally warm the glue in a microwave oven when reused Step 3 Apply paper mache to the wire frame. Wrap 6 or 7 layers around the trunk base, 3 or 4layers around the mid sections of the tree, and 1 or 2 layers to the outer branches. Try to rub out as many bubbles as possible as you are going along, and shape the paper on the outer branches as cylindrical as possible during the first application of paper mache strips. It may be the last layer before the bark is applied. Wait a day for drying, or until it dries hard. Step 4 While you're waiting, Make flowers, leaves, stems, and thorns The video describe how to make the roses, leaves, stems, and thorns for the the Origami Bonsai Rose Bush. There are many other possibilities for flowers and and leaves with a Google search Step5 Apply another layer or paper mache if you want the trunk thicker. Every day or two apply another 6 or 7 layers to the base of the trunk, and 3 or 4 to the mid section. Step 6 ...more paper mache Step 7 ...more flowers, leaves, stems, and thorns. Step 8 Apply the bark paper to the trunk with paper mache glue. There are lots of options for finishing the trunk. The video describes applying a fine wood-grained paper, but you could also paint the trunk, if you can't find a bark-like looking paper. Found mine at the Paper Place: http://www.thepaperplace.ca/ Step 9 ...more flowers, leaves, stems, and thorns Step 10 Apply a second layer of fine brown paper to the trunk Step 11 Affix the flowers, leaves, stems, and thorns to the trunk (white glue to keep things solidly affixed) Step 12 Press the foam into the bonsai pot snugly and tie down the bonsai with the excess copper wire pushed through the bottom of the pot. White glue the trunk into place after pressing it into the flower arrangement foam. Step 13 Cover the foam with gravel, and add a little sheet moss for character.
