The song was released to radios and for digital download April 24, 2009. To date the song has been played more than 11,564,503 times on his MySpace page. The song has sold over 1 million downloads. Video was premiered at MTV on June 15, 2009. Rick Ross makes a cameo appearance in the video.the video was directed by Gil Green "Fire Burning" (Remix) (featuring Pitbull) Michael Menachem of Billboard reviewed the song as "the most danceable single yet" and commented on the fast tempo and Kingston's well-projected vocal "that allows producer RedOne to blend the infectious hook with heavy synthesizers and a variety of percussive sounds that made Lady GaGa's "Poker Face" so striking". Next, a wolf is walking the transforms into a girl at the club. In the final scene it shows Shakira dancing on top of a high building and dancing with a ladder. This goes in contrast to the other joint-releases from this album where one track is taken from each disc. Knowles told MTV that the song "kind of talks about someone being very confident and having this swagger when they walk and when they talk, and that being one of the reasons why I'm attracted to them." Knowles co-directed the video for "Ego" with her choreographer of twelve years, Frank Gatson Jr. Gatson has been Knowles' creative director for several of her videos, such as "Suga Mama", "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)", and "Get Me Bodied", as well as her last three world tours, including the I Am Tour. The song has been lauded by critics. On June 16, 2009, Popjustice got an advanced listen of the track, describing it as "literally very good". "It doesn't sound like anything Shakira has done before - it's a bit dancey and a bit electronic with a quite organic disco feel - but even as an instrumental there would still be a feeling that this is very much a Shakira-sounding track....it's a new sound for Shakira but only Shakira could make a song like this and get away with it... 'She Wolf' represents a brilliantly tight bond between art and artist. It's fun and deranged, too, like pop music at its best sometimes needs to be".[10] The following day, Digital Spy also had an advance listen of the track; the review said that the song "sounds like nothing else in the charts at the moment... This is the sort of track that will sound terrific on the radio, terrific on the dancefloor and especially terrific as you strut into work with your iPod cranked up to full whack on a hot summer's morning. In short, it's an absolute smash".[11] Rolling Stone said the song is a "fierce piece of electro-pop".[12] The Guardian said it is Shakira's "most powerful song yet".[13] Billboard reviewed 'Loba': "Though the song's wolf cries and panting noises are a little goofy, it's sure to get the Colombian singer's die-hard fans howling right along on the dancefloor. Its infectious groove rides a funk bassline, pulsates like a wild animal's heartbeat and plays perfectly to Shakira's ability to sing fast, crowded phrases in a way that forces the listener to pay attention. The music video was directed by Jake Nava. It was shot from June 9 to June 12 in Los Angeles, CA. It premiered on MTV on July 30th at 8pm and features a live wolf. A video for the Spanish version was also released.[16] Shakira's official website described the video as "An inventively sexy video directed by Jake Nava and featuring the metamorphosis of a woman told through her unique dance techniques".[17] The video premiered as expected to positive reviews by MTV. She herks and jerks, folds herself in half, torques vertebrae, lifts legs over her head, pops her shoulders in and out of their sockets, hangs upside down, nearly topples over ... the list goes on and on. The video begins with Shakira" walking into a closet (leaving her lover asleep) where she bodypops and dances by herself, also paying homage to Michael Jackson's famous anti-gravity lean. Then, the closet transforms into a club with her dancing with five backup dancers. After that, it shows her in a gold cage making seductive poses. The scene switches back & forth. Next, a wolf is walking the transforms into a girl at the club. In the final scene it shows Shakira dancing on top of a high building and dancing with a ladder. The song was released on May 19, 2009, as the album's fifth single in the United States. The remix, featuring hip hop artist Kanye West, is included on the Above and Beyoncé - Video Collection & Dance Mixes CD/DVD. "Ego" was planned as the third single from the album, but later was changed in favor of "Diva". "Ego" was released along with "Sweet Dreams", both tracks taken from the second disc of her album I Am Sasha Fierce. This goes in contrast to the other joint-releases from this album where one track is taken from each disc. Knowles told MTV that the song "kind of talks about someone being very confident and having this swagger when they walk and when they talk, and that being one of the reasons why I'm attracted to them." Knowles co-directed the video for "Ego" with her choreographer of twelve years, Frank Gatson Jr. Gatson has been Knowles' creative director for several of her videos, such as "Suga Mama", "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)", and "Get Me Bodied", as well as her last three world tours, including the I Am Tour. Knowles let Gatson direct the video for "Ego" after he introduced her to a new choreographer, Sheryl Murakami.[3] "My goal for [the] video is simplicity", Knowles tells Entertainment Weekly. "In 'Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)', I saw this old tape of Bob Fosse's wife, and I used that as inspiration. Her two back-up dancers are dressed similarly and do the same dance routine. Knowles and her dancers perform the choreography in front of a black glossy wall. In the video, a variety of props are used, including long glittery poles. Wearing a cropped jacket over her leotard, Knowles sits on a white, glittery chair for parts of the choreography, as well as the closing scenes of the video. It premiered on the June 15, 2009 episode of BET's Access Granted.[8] In the remix video, Kanye West begins his rap in an empty room next to a follow spot. The whole video is a continuous double-angled scene where Knowles is seated on the golden chair, previously seen in the original video. Clips are shown back and forth of Knowles singing to the music and dancing on her own. Sometimes during the clip she does not sing and instead smiles or laughs and than continues. Clips from this fan exclusive are also included in the other two versions. In the B-roll footage on Above and Beyoncé - Video Collection & Dance Mixes, it was shown that a clay sculpture of Knowles was made for the "Ego" video.
